  1. Sylvia, you are quite the bread/pizza maker yourself!! I am making baguettes tomorrow. Hey - many of you may know this, but for making great (OK, great is exaggerating!) textured gluten-free bread, you heave your cold cast iron skillet into the oven, crank her up to whatever temp your recipe is, toss in goods, and then throw a couple of ice cubes...
  2. Actually, we sometimes do store stuff outside in the snow - it would be fine for at least five months, sometimes six. But not very often. Maybe if someone were to come and shovel the driveway for us that someone could find out for him/herself!
  3. Of course we don't think of these things when it is green outside, the birds are chirping and the flowers blooming. A corner lot would be OUCH in winter!
  4. That really sounds good! Mine was simply gluten-free cereal with lactose-free yogurt and fresh blackberries. I knew I would have about a trillion calories at lunch and dinner so I was a good girl for breakfast at least!
  5. Awesome! Who doesn't love a great meatloaf?
  6. Smoky Chipotle Black Bean and Lime Soup Garlic Cheddar Biscuits Cheese Board with Local Cheeses and Aged Balsamic Coconut Layer Cake Sparkling Apple Cider It was quite the lunch!
  7. Man, I am thrilled about this. Do you know how long they keep?
  8. For sure you are serious? You're not just pulling our legs then a few days later give us the punch line? It sounds amazing! I cannot wait to try them. I can cope with a bland taste by adding something but the texture! Pinch me. Am I dreaming? This is dumb. For some reason my sentences run together without much space between.
  9. Oh, how lovely. It is frustrating when one must worry about what is in food - and not just for celiacs but everyone. Why can we not just have unadulterated F O O D ? ? ?
  10. We can't get Schar products where I live but do whenever we go to Europe. This is good to know for our next trip. Are they light and airy? Please tell me they are! Do they have a bit of lovely chew?
  11. A few more ideas (just ask if you want any of the recipes): Spiced Jam with Heady Garlic and Gorgonzola Cheese Wild Rice Blini Tostada Cups with Lemony Lentils and Spinach Potato Crostini with Caramelized Bacon Poached Shrimp with Horseradish Beet Coulis (this one is GORGEOUS!) Uptown Goat Cheese Potato Skins with Capers Sweet Polenta Fries Fiery...
  12. As I knew I'd be making a complex Korean dinner I opted for a simple blueberry raspberry smoothie. That's it!
  13. He has been one of the top 3 chefs on the planet in recent years. His restaurant, near London, is called "The Fat Duck" and I want to go there desperately. The multi-course molecular gastronomy meals are around $300-$500 each plus wine but I want to do it once in my life. He and Grant Achaz in Chicago and Ferran Adria in Spain (El Bulli) are known to be...
  14. I think they would be perfect for that. I would try making a small batch first so you get the hang of it, so you can tell how much cheese to use. Great question - use the large grater. Yeah - they will say, "And I heard celiac is hard. Piffle...you have it easy" or some such nonsense.
  15. That freezing rain is downright horrid. We had freezing rain awhile ago (a long while ago) and it froze solid so under our snow (we don't have much - just a few inches) is a thick massive sheet of ice. You could easily skate on the streets. I hope you don't get any of that. Yuck.
  16. You know, I bet you could make it without. Do you happen to have psyllium fibre husks? I find them at the health food store and in one of our grocery stores. I add that and a bit of gelatin - that can sometimes be a good replacement. In fact, you technically do not need a gum for cakes and cookies (but you do in yeast breads, etc.). You could even...
  17. How about a nice, homey meatloaf? It can be done gluten, corn, dairy, soy, onion, olive oil and garlic free! Whew! What a mouthful. BTW - I know what you mean about the children thing. We don't have children, either, (dumb celiac) so it sometimes seems that we get visited less. Not by my family but friends of family. They always want to see the...
  18. Sorry for my ignorance. Does guar gum contain corn?
  19. Fricos are delicious! Sometimes I make them and break into shards to use in salads for a bit of savoury saltiness. Here's what you do: Grate Parmesan cheese and sprinkle in a circle about 2" or 3" big. Don't pile high - there should be just one or two layers of cheese as when they melt they look lacey. Oh, yes. You can even do this on your...
  20. Count me in as a nerd. I read over 200 books in 2011 and am off to a good start for 2012! Most is non fiction but I do love some of the Victorian-era fiction. The distinction between classes is compelling. I somehow missed AMT's Victorian dinner! Darn it. I do recipe testing for them so am usually up on these things. Have you seen any of Heston...
  21. I don't blame you. It is NOT nice. We are used to it, having lived in this climate all our lives, but that does not mean we have to like it! Wonder how long you will have to wait for your Mayo Clinic appointment...
  22. Believe it or not, by July it can get up to 100F! Not often but it certainly is not uncommon. There is an area in Portugal that would be perfect for me - about 70F nearly always, with a variant of only 5 degrees. None of this icky -40 all the way up to 100 stuff!
  23. Ahhhhh...a version of steak frites. Delicious!
  24. We are going to Korea tonight (well, at least our tastebuds are!): Korean Green Onion Pancakes with Soy Dressing Chilled Tangy Buckwheat Soba Noodles Cucumber "Relish" Salad
  25. I am frustrated with you. Take a look at this wonderful layer cake. It is easy to make and tastes divine. Very moist AND meets all your requirements. It calls for either olive or veg oil (you'd think in a cake she wouldn't notice!), no dairy, no corn, no soy... I have made it many times for guests who would not have known it was gluten free but for...
