ARCHIVED Munich, No Schnitzel Or Beer Steins...paris, No Crepes And Pastries
Tina B replied to The Glutenator's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I went to Budapest, Vienna and Prague for 2 weeks last summer and did not have a problem. At he hotels in Europe the breakfast buffets always contain way more fruits, yogurt and cheese than here in the US where a lot of the time it is bagels, danish etc. At the restaurants we had no problem finding menus in english and most europeans in the big tourist areas... -
ARCHIVED Is It Possible To Eat gluten-free In A Household Of G-Eaters?
Tina B replied to kimann79's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I thought the Wholefoods own gluten free bakery pizza crusts were good. Just pop on your own toppings. I put them directly on the oven rack so they crisp and bake them a a higher temp then the package says. I use 400 degrees. -

She needs to realize that her risk of T-cell lymphona is extremely high with untreated celiac disease. it can be fatal and no cake or bread in the world is worth that to me even if I were someone who didn't get symptoms right away. -

Good for you!!! I am the only one in our household and the mom and the cook. Now my 2 sons are out of college and gone so it is only my husband and I. I could have made our kitchen totally gluten free and they would have done it for me but I never thought it was fair to them. If I was making a main meal it would be gluten free. Things like stew, soup, casseroles... -

I would sooooo pay extra not to have half of them broken. Now I'm paying for half a box of crumbs. -
ARCHIVED Glutino Crackers
Tina B posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Does anyone else love Glutino crackers? They are my favorite. Love the shape and texture similar to a Ritz. My big complaint is the packaging. They are packaged in 2 pouches inside a box. EVERY TIME I buy them at least a third of them are broken. They need to package them in sleeves like Ritz. I sent a message on their website under "contact us". If anyone... -
ARCHIVED Only Celiac In The Family

I am the only one so far in my family. However, I suspect that one of my brothers may have it but doesn't want to hear about being tested. He has lots of IBS type symptoms. -

Wow, after reading all of this about cross contamination. I've been baking regular stuff for the family and co workers for years without a problem. I don't eat any of it and I wash all surfaces and pans. I consider myself one of the lucky ones. -

The best pasta I've found that does not fall apart at all is Bionature. Here is RI you an get it in regular markets in the aisle with the health and organic foods. It does need to be cooked about 3 minutes longer than the bag states. Look for the pink trimmed bag. The spaghetti is awesome. Twirls like regular spaghetti and stays together well. Comes in Penne... -
ARCHIVED Did You Have A Trigger That Started Your Symptoms?
Tina B replied to afreeclimber74's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I may have been undiagnosed for a long time because I had a lot of vague GI symptoms as a child. Nothing dramatic but the GP told my parents I had a "nervous stomach". True diagnosis was after my second child was born. Severe iron deficiency anemia that did not respond to iron replacement. H & H 6 and 21. Vague GI symptoms, bloating, gas, occ. diarrhea... -

ARCHIVED What Are The Issues
Tina B replied to Mr.GF's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There is much more available in a regular market now then 18 years ago when I was diagnosed. Our regular supermarkets here in RI carry, gluten free pastas (my favorite is Bionaturae. Leave it to the Italians to get it right.) Rice Chex and Corn Chex for cereals as well as specialty brands. Glutino crackers etc. Some markets have them in a special section... -
ARCHIVED Biggest Obstacle In Coping With celiac disease
Tina B replied to Mr.GF's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Actually, my husband and kids say that my going gluten free has introduced them to all kinds of great food that they might not have tried. Quinoa, buckwheat kasha, etc. Healthier too. My husband said that it was nice not to have to go to McDonalds or Burger King while traveling with the kids. He had an excuse, me. We got to go to real sit down restaurants... -
ARCHIVED Biggest Obstacle In Coping With celiac disease
Tina B replied to Mr.GF's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Technically, yes. It never bothered me and I didn't use any parts that had obvious crumbs on them. ie: the part where the mayo might have picked up some crumbs. Sometimes you've just got to pick your best option. It worked out fine for me. -
ARCHIVED Biggest Obstacle In Coping With celiac disease
Tina B replied to Mr.GF's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
No, not eating food. There is tons of food that is OK. I also have no problem eating in restaurants. Even regular menus have good choices. Last night had clams zuppa (no bread) and grilled veal chop with baked potato and grilled asparagus. I stay away from anything with a sauce or bread topping. I'd say my biggest is going to a work banquet or conference... -

The others are correct, you can't only do it for a few days and expect results. Also, Rice, Corn and potatoes are carbs. -
ARCHIVED Is There An Expert In Immunology Here?
Tina B replied to poopedout's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The gastroenterologist who diagnosed me in 1990 said that a duodenal biopsy is the only difinitive diagnosis. Anitgliadin antibodies were positive but siad it should be confirmed by biopsy. Result was "severe celiac disease". Just don't go gluten free before having a biopsy. -
ARCHIVED Getting Desperate - Really Need Help
Tina B replied to poopedout's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I was diagnosed in 1990. My husband is a primary care physician and has diagnosed several patients in their 60's and 70's. One woman I work with, mother was just diagnosed at age 75. Many have gone undiagnosed with very vague sympotms and if you carry the gene it can become active after a trauma to the body. This can be anything from pregnancy in women to... -
ARCHIVED Airlines Providing gluten-free Meals
Tina B replied to Nightingale8472's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Last year I went to Budapest, Vienna and Prague for 2 weeks. I don't even bother calling ahead for airline food. When I did it as terrible and one time they forgot. Now I just make sure I have my gluten-free crackers, breakfast bars, dried fruit etc and if there is one of the meal choices that sound OK I will get it and pick on the parts that are gluten free... -
ARCHIVED Cant Stop Eating Gluten, What To Do?
Tina B replied to taradorff's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Even if you are more tolerant than most and can eat a small amount without getting symptoms you are doing damage to your intestines. You put yourself at a very high risk for intestinal lymphoma which is a cancer and is FATAL. No cake or pizza in the worth is worth that to me. I now people who have been diagnosed and because their symptoms are mild or vague... -
Sorry, I meant False negative not positive. If you were gluten free when the test was done you might have had a false negative.
