  1. Li hing is so common here in Hawaii and often overused. It is an aquired taste for some. Although usually made from dry plum, its sometimes artificial now. You can make great mango pickles without it. Thanks Ken, I went to the oriental store today but couldn't remember Li Hing. I asked them what they use to make mango pickles that startst...
  2. In that case, I think I'd also suggest going back on gluten for the four weeks. I am undiagnosed and some of my physicians respect that, some have a roll your eyes attitude about it. I've wondered what would happen if I'm ever hospitalized. Will the dietary department take it seriously if I don't have the diagnosis? Enjoy some croissants, baklava...
  3. Thanks for the link Sylvia. Yick lung, sounds great, we have two oriental groceries in the area. How should I introduce it to my neighbors? We're going to cut up these mangos and make pickles! I know what's going to happen already. My dearly beloved 80 year olds (one is turning 90 this year) will be game for peeling and chopping the mango. If I come...
  4. Prickly, I'll get a nine incher. Thanks for the advice! (But I'll wait for a coupon, that's just the way I am.) I've also found smaller is better. When I got rid of a bunch of stuff, I gave these really great 4" pans away to a neighbor. She didn't want to take them. I told her I'd ask for them back if I ever started baking again. I think they...
  5. I love pickles! But what the heck is
  6. Gawd, if I must, I must. (Buy a new springform pan.) I'm glad to know you're a fellow thrift store shopper. My BIL skeeved out once when somebody complimented me on my very cool top. I told them I bought it at Jesus House of Hope (they've since changed the name to House of Hope(local food bank/thrift store), he said "Oooh, that freak's me out, you're...
  7. Here's my story about Discoid Lupus, another autoimmune disease. I had patches on my skin, one on my cheek, another on my nose. They didn't itch. My dermatologist thought they might be skin cancer and biopsied both spots over the course of four years. Then I got this spot on my left lower earlobe that just itched like crazy! It didn't go away forever...
  8. Thank you both for helping me plan my blessed (or cursed) mango fest. I know the Dutch in me will make me use up each one. I bet Mango cheesecake is the bomb. I gave my 9" springform cake pan to hospice, do you think buying a used one is safe, or are there too many crevices? (Hate thoss cubby holds for gluten!)
  9. We had chicken enciladas and gaucamole tonight with nuked Mission cornchips and sharp cheddar cheese. I think I'm stuck Cinco de Mayo! I'm making homemade ancho sauce right now. Glad you'll be wearing purple cougie! xxx That' being a friend, babe!
  10. As of this morning, I still had three qt. sized bags of sliced mangos from last season in the freezer. I have three mangos on the kitchen counter in a paper bag with an apple in there because my sister showed up with them this weekend. I have a neighbor who has promised me more mangos than I can possibly use, it's a bumper crop this year and she has two...
  11. I made ground chicken Hawaiain meatballs adapted from Pioner Woman's blog for Meatballs with Pineapple and Peppers. My breadcrumbs were Udi's sandwich bread that has been in the freezer for over a year, whirled them up in my mini food procesor. I followed the rest of the recipe pretty closely. I stuck a piece of parchment paper on the cookie sheet...
  12. That sounds delicious! Way to go. Hi 5 ^^^!
  13. I had a 2 or 3 week old cabbage in the frig and decided today was the day, I had to cook that head of cabbagge! (I am a master procrastinator.) I finally dedcided on Hungarian cabbage casserole after persuing several recipes online and reading all the reviews. I added sauteed ground chicken, ground sirloin and ground Italian sausage so that it could be...
  14. (((())))) Hugs back! Thanks for fixing my boo boos when I report them. If you have a Brazilian market in your neck of the woods, there is a mix you only have to add egg and water to that makes cheese rolls that are the bomb. And it costs less! We love the sausage from that store too, they make it themselves and it's gluten-free.
  15. ROFLOL! My dad was an onion farmer, he would just have to give you a big bear hug and special smile for your post I do love onions too! (I used to make an onion pie, the whole family loved it. I'm not sure it will work in a meringue shell, guessing not.
  16. We had country Greek tonight. Tirokafteri (No, I swear it doesn't need correcting, moderator!) dip with Glutino bagel chips (they're really salty but good) and grilled chicken legs with Cattleman's mustard BBQ sauce. I love that sauce, WalMart sells it for just $1.60 a bottle and it's all good. We had watermelon and mango for desert. I had lots...
  17. I must say you stepped up to the plate babe, Yum!
  18. I have a big lunch box I purchased at Wal-Mart (mfg is Ozark). I sling that over my shoulder, like a purse. I use a couple of Coleman frozen fake ice bags to keep things cold. Nobody ever says a word about it, even though it's red. I pack my lunch every day and live in the deep south, work on the road and the bag sits in my hot car for quite a few hours...
  19. FOFLOL. Yay! Nothing to whine about.. Er, I didn't feel well enough to do the duck preparation on Cinco de Mayo. You do have to score the fat with a knife, marinate it and pour boiling water over it so he ended up smoking it on Sunday when I felt up to the task. steam it before smoking Last time I did a traditional orange sauce. This time I marinated...
  20. OOOOOHHHHH....STOP IT!...YOUR SPOILING ME!!!....LOL!!!

  21. DP loves nothing better than smoking, watching sports and drinking beer. We live in the deep south so he gets a bit warped in the summer, the sunshine adds too much heat to the smoker! I really need to buy an umbrellla stand and a SUVP umbrella or some shade cloth for him. That whole chicken was on sale for a little over $6. I had it every day for lunch...
  22. So..."WHAT ARE YOU COOKING TONIGHT!"...LOL!

  23. I don't have a reaction to Skippy brand, I buy the natual super chunk style. I like that brand because the peanut butter doesn't separate and have to be stirred like most of the other "natural" brands that don't have additives. Could the heartburn be from anything else you ate today or last night? Heartburn isn't one of my issues, but I'm pretty...
  24. What do you say to comments like that? Once someone said that I have good will power. I replied, "No, I have a constant reminder of the painful consequences of going off the diet. It's not like I feel satisfied from eating...[gluten]...almost immediately I feel sick to my stomach...." That seemed to be a good reply.
