  1. An amazingly good salad. Hearts of romaine, watercress, raddicio (sp?), a fresh sliced perfectly ripened bosc pear, creamy goat cheese, walnuts and a balsamic reduction. I tried to think of what would make it better and couldn't think of anything but how good it was. It was that good.
  2. AKKKK! Yes, I concur. We have a winner, the dietary dept. at Ken's hospital. That's really bad.
  3. I hope the creme brulee (and theater) was fabulous. Wouldn't it be fun to take one of those creme brulee torches to the restaurant with you? When the bread guy shows up, you ignite the torch and tell him you'll brulee his fingers if he tries to stick that nasty basket of bread on your table. Whoa! Word would spread through the kitchen that table...
  4. She should meet my BIL then, because he can COOK the gluten out. Uh huh.
  5. Ewwwww. Both of those are bad, so good nominations for the 2012 Darwinian nominations.
  6. Nominate anybody you'd like, manufacturer, relative, co-worker, retailer...all in good fun and a place to share our angst and sense of humor. My nomination: The manufacturer (that starts with an "A") for prominently promoting their grits as gluten-free in bold type on the label. I was waiting for my tea to steep this morning and read the only recipe...
  7. You can get replacement parts from a site like this...haven't purchased from them myself because I have a K. A., but they're an authorized dealer. Open Original Shared Link
  8. I'm a coffee lover too. For awhile, I had to substitute green tea. It didn't kill me emotionally or physically. I yearned a bit, but no more than I yearned for other things. (World peace, the end of US occupation in the Middle East, that more grocery stores would carry Against the Grain pizzas and bagels and french bread, or that the South Florida...
  9. Hey marilyn, I don't want to do whole foods anymore, it's no fun and I'm not seeing any difference. How long did it take you?

  10. Hi Sandra, You might want to check out the info here.Click here: LUPUS FOUNDATION OF AMERICA - General Questions about Lupus. Are you seeing a good rheumy? Had your complement T3 and T4 levels checked? There is a slue of other tests, hope you don't have it but wish you well finding your path to healthiness.
  11. I was told by my the head RN at the Surgery Center that I was really lucky I had the Gastro I chose. She said every other GI in town would have scheduled my upper and lower on separate days to maximize rembusement. There is soy in Lidocaine too. Nasty stuff. If you're bleeding from the rectum, it would be a good idea to have a colonoscapy IMHO. Sorry...
  12. Tell Dad you'll clean his car out if he'll give you money for a new pan. If you need a ride, make that part of the deal. Mom doesn't need to know the details, and she doesn't need to know that you keep your pan in your bedroom.
  13. Really sorry to say that the medical establishment really lacks (ok, sucks) when it comes to celiac disease. Hope you're okay. You tried to do everythng right. Keep us postted.
  14. I need to preface by saying I'm not a mother. Not all people with celiac disease or gluten intolerance present with classical symptoms. And not all pediatricians and doctors are all very knowledgeable about the condition, IMO. Did he improve at all with avoiding dairy products? I'd attempt a gluten-free diet with him, but it would be good to get...
  15. That sounds good! I'll give it a whirl! I don't mind the taste of chick pea flour, I think the bread will be great!
  16. I'm BACK!!! ... HaHaHaHa!!!

  17. That's actually a condensed version of her recipe. She's probably rolling over in her grave, but I was so excited to have cream of broccoli soup that wan't icky and didn't require all that much work. Then I got all excited about making creamed soups for casseroles and stuff. I'll post the actual recipe if you ask...
  18. Per Julia Child, simmer 1/2 cup rice in 4 cups water (or combination of water, milk, stock.) Add 1 or 2 cups sauteed onions. She suggested butter, and suggests you sautee them for 8-10 minutes. While the rice is cooking, steam the vegetables you want for your soup. (I used brocolli.) Season to taste and serve with a dollup of yogurt or not after pureeing...
  19. Yes, I can relate, but probably not in the fashion you expect. Congratulations on having a Grandson! How cool is that?!!? Yay! I am childless but find genetics fascinating. I'm the youngest of 5 children with my mother being the gene carrier. I suspect that her father had celiac disease but that's never been confirmed. My maternal grandfather...
  20. Welcome to the forum, Nicole! You've been through so much, conquering a gluten-free diet will be so much easier in comparison. Like NV'smom, I cook extras too, to either freeze or refrigerate. I'm not a menu planner either, and don't particularly enjoy grocery shopping. I've found a huge benefit from being gluten-free: you cut a substantial amount...
  21. Sorry a lot you're not feeling well.
  22. Babe...will you share Grandmother's recipe?
  23. That was a good article, Irish, thanks for sharing. OP, I like Vitamin D 3 drops. You just stick a drop in your water, juice, whatever. It's tasteless. I get mine at the healthfood store.
  24. From everything I've read (and experienced), the anger is normal. What you've been through isn't fair! You did everything right. You're also doing the right thing by writing about it and using the forum to learn about proceeding with a gluten-free lifestyle in order to improve your health and wellbeing. Allow yourself to go through the anger phase...
  25. I haven't been back to my post. I got a little wrapped up with Hurricane Issac, even though it was just a tropical storm here. Anyway. Back to the OP. If you find the buns are too gummy, you have a couple of choices I found out by accident. If you make buns thin and freeze them, you can toast them in your toaster (I just have a pop up) or make...
