				ARCHIVED New Dx 2 Teens
srall replied to maximoo's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Assuming that my husband is indeed not sensitive at all to gluten (I have my doubts)...then yes. He could go years without eating gluten and then reintroduce without any issues. He's never had any blood tests or endoscopy because he does not seem to have a problem with gluten. However, I think a lot of people probably are eating way more gluten than is... -

I've always heard that if you are not sensitive to gluten and you don't eat it for even a few years, and then reintroduce it, you won't react. If you eliminate gluten, and then are accidentally glutened and have a bad response, that means you are gluten intolerant and gluten is damaging your body. I do think for some people there are benefits to going... -

I am not as knowledgeable as the other posters...a lot of this I am figuring out on my own. I seem to have done much more research than our doctors. Just a couple of interesting things. I do have a friend who is Irish, who has celiac disease and an autistic child. I haven't heard those specific stats before, but I do know one person who fits the bill... -

ARCHIVED Need Some Advice About Having Children Tested
srall replied to CarolinaKip's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hmmm. What do you do if they test normal? My daughter was 7 and tested normal. I tested normal too. I can't express how sick my daughter was before going gluten free. She was falling apart, had chronic D, rashes, full blown anxiety attacks, canker sores, sunken eyes, temper tantrums...just to name a few. Once we went gluten/dairy/corn free everything... -
Shauna, I agree. Yesterday when I was responding to the O.P. the first response I wrote I had to erase because it was coming across so b%$@#y. Essentially I was asking why on earth we feel like we need a doctor's permission to go gluten free? I'll just state again, my daughter is eating so much healthier. I admit I now pay very close attention to her...

One thing I noticed with both myself and my little girl, is that once we went gluten free (6 months apart from each other), all of the sudden other foods that our bodies were somehow coping with (tolerating) made us react. Corn gave us both hives, dairy gave my daughter a rash and me the big D. I also recommend a food journal. We pinpointed things pretty...

There are a lot of people here on a no grains diet. I'm on week 3 or 4 right now. I'm not keeping track. Initially I was going to test it for 6 weeks, but after the first week, after the INTENSE cravings died off, I realized this would be permanent. I had some residual issues, mostly joint pain that must wouldn't resolve just (wheat) gluten free. I...

I understand that we trust our doctors to give us the best advice, but honestly I've found when it comes to celiac and gluten intolerance that the doctors really don't understand the disease, and the blood tests are woefully primitive. That said, I know that for kids it's easier for them to navigate the school system with a positive diagnosis, but what do...

				ARCHIVED Destin/panama City Beach
srall replied to radiantrapunzel1's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I was there last summer right after I went gluten free. I thought it was easy to be gluten free there. We had a house so we cooked which helped. But in the restaurants I thought it was easy to order fish and veggies. I am sorry that I can't remember any specific restaurants. It's just in that area there seemed to be good salad and seafood options... -

ARCHIVED Anybody Else's Kids Missing So Much School?
srall replied to srall's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Yikes! At least, as D.Steph pointed out, my daughter can still catch up when she misses so much school. I'm hoping that even by next year we are normalizing. I sort of feel like this year has been a throw away year, and hopefully next year we have a good fresh start. (She also didn't have a great teacher). And Medusa, my daughter's chronic illness... -

ARCHIVED Gluten Associated Sensitivity & Cross Reactive Foods
srall replied to laura4669's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I'm taking back what I said about soy though...I did have a tummy ache last night. I think if you're going to go grain free you need to make the same commitment that you make when you go gluten free. And I have been STARVING this week, but it's easing up. It's supposed to get better. I am pretty underweight and am reluctant to go too low carb, so I'm... -

ARCHIVED Gluten Associated Sensitivity & Cross Reactive Foods
srall replied to laura4669's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
FWIW, here's something I have recently noticed. When I went gluten free 13 months ago, many other food intolerances reared their ugly heads. One week ago I gave up all grains. Within one week I have tested foods which this past year have caused great problems, and found (so far) that they aren't bothering me. I have had cream in my coffee the past two... -
I can't say what you might be reacting to, but I'd call the doc. If for no other reason than your peace of mind. I think babies are pretty tough and you get the brunt of the bad stuff so baby is protected. Don't worry too much.

				ARCHIVED Two Kids With Celiac's?
srall replied to WhenDee's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I don't know the statistics, but my mom, myself and my 8 year old all have it...well, gluten intolerance. I guess I can't say "celiac" since we had "normal" blood tests. My daughter had the most official diagnosis as her pediatrician was willing to diagnose her gluten sensitive based on dietary response. My 40 year old brother has a gluten intolerance... -

ARCHIVED How Young Was Your Child Diagnosed?
srall replied to Kimmik95's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
So interesting about the teeth. My daughter (who turns 8 in 3 days) has many cavities and stained teeth. Plus some enamel on her molars never formed so she's had to have teeth capped. Very interesting. Any personally I went my whole adult life without any cavities, and since I was pregnant with my daughter (8 years ago obviously) I've had 10 cavities... -

ARCHIVED Anybody Else's Kids Missing So Much School?
srall posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My daughter has now missed 16 days of school. (3 of those were a trip to WDW) She missed most of her days right before she was diagnosed last October. I think she missed 9 days by Halloween. But this is really driving me crazy. She's only in second grade but it's freaking me out. She had D last night and I'm trying to figure out where it came from... -
You are probably right about the withdrawal. I think I'm using "detox" and "withdrawal" interchangeably. However when I went gluten free a year ago (as opposed to grain free now) I had really freaky symptoms....more like a detox. My skin was completely wrecked and the stuff that came out of other parts of my body was disgusting...it really did seem like...

ARCHIVED How Long Have You Been Diagnosed?
srall replied to Noglutenformethanks's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was also self-diagnosed. I'd been sick for two years, and honestly having stomach issues for many years, and I did a diet detox. My girlfriend suggested I try eliminating gluten and dairy for the month as well because she'd detected a dairy intolerance when she did her detox. I'm so glad I listened. Everything turned around within a few weeks. By... -
I just went grain free (gluten free a year ago) and was surprised to be going through a detox again. You sort of forget. I took my 7 year old gluten free last October and I honestly don't remember too many detox symptoms with her. She was so so sick that she only seemed to improve. However, I wonder if she could really verbalize what was happening...

Great advice. I'm stopping refined sugar too. Although I hardly eat any so I'm not too terribly worried. Mostly the carb cravings that scare me. I'm sitting at my computer right now and I did research the GAPS diet. That seems more do-able to me that SCD. There are a lot of foods on SCD that mess with me, but GAPS seems like most of the banned foods...

Today I'm making the leap to grain free. I'm going to at least give it a try for the next 5 weeks. I still have some inflammation in my joints, and sinuses and a little rosacea that shows me I'm still eating things that are causing too much inflammation in my body. I've been a little nervous to do this because I'm still underweight and I'm hoping I can...

ARCHIVED "glutened" Symptoms - When Did They Start?
srall replied to Katrala's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
By the time I went gluten free (a year ago) I had already been experiencing constant nausea and brain fog for a couple of years. I figured out the whole thing by just doing a diet detox. I was desperate to feel better so I started eating vegan and also eliminated alcohol, coffee and dairy and of course gluten. I would have done anything to feel better... -

ARCHIVED Rash Looking Thing Around Daughter's Mouth
srall replied to kyga2's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
To me it sounds like a vitamin B deficiency. My daughter had that and we had large doses of B to combat it. (If it's the same thing) -

I had the EXACT same conversation with my brother, except I'm 110% sure he has celiac
