  1. Butter gets me. I keep thinking it's safe because a lot of people who can't handle lactose can still handle butter, but I've learned the hard way that for me it's casein. I can feel very very drunk from dairy.

    ARCHIVED It's Annoying!

Well, Lexi, in all fairness I do agree it's annoying and misleading for the general public when someone claims to be gluten free then eats a hamburger at a party. I have a friend like this who is celiac but still every once in awhile will eat what she wants...usually at a party that I'm at. She admits she pays dearly later, but then people wonder why I...
  3. I don't know how long you need to be gluten free before you can introduce dairy, but I am stilll very intolerant to dairy after almost 2 years. It's been a huge struggle to keep good fats in my diet. I try coconut milk, avocados, olive oil and canola oil. I don't do much rice milk and almond milk for cc reasons and an allergy to almonds. After this...
  4. 17 years? That's a long time to be on the other side of that rage. My daughter is also gluten free (for a year now.) She is 8. Her anxiety was off the charts before we took her gluten free too and she is sooooooooooo much better now. I had to talk to the pediatrician about getting her a psychiatrist before we figured it out. I really hope for you...
  5. I think the vitamins are great advice. I almost always forget them when traveling then really suffer, mostly from fatigue and muscle pain. Or could be hidden gluten since I'm traveling. At home I mostly cook for myself. One of my biggest signs that I should have been gluten free could have been the rages I felt. I talked to my gyno about a month before...
  6. I like this advice of having your daughter order for herself. I've been so overbearing and panicky about ordering in restaurants I think I've taken away some of my 8 y.o. daughter's power. I"m going to have her start ordering her own food. She has gotten very bold about refusing food from other people. So I'm proud of that

    ARCHIVED It's Annoying!

Well, seeing how I found out I was gluten intolerant because I did a cleanse I don't really see the harm in it. Eating gluten free is free and legal and we don't need anyone's permission. Since my daughter and I both tested negative for celiac, I get annoyed when people question my self diagnosis. I wish people would not worry about what I'm eating nor...
  8. I would never trust another person to feed my child. I have done way too much research about what is and isn't safe. I've had neighbors give her rice milk because it's dairy free, but it still has gluten. I just send food and don't expect another parent to make any changes to feed her. It hasn't caused any problems. There have been a couple of times...
  9. I have before and after pictures of myself and my daughter on my iphone. If someone really wants to get into with me I just whip out the pictures. And they are not pretty. The fact that my daughter and I both had such physical outward reactions to gluten/dairy/corn helped my husband get on board, but he was resistant at first. And nurses...UGH! Both...
  10. I had a similar thing happen to me Friday night. I was out to eat with a bunch of friends and started off by telling the server that I had to be gluten and dairy free. He said, "Well, is it an allergy or just a sensitivity?" I actually hate the term "gluten sensitivity" because that doesn't even begin to cover it. I just said, "Listen, it's both...and...
  11. It truly will get easier. I agree with EM4G that eating whole foods and just looking for meat and veggies and fruits is a good place to start. I would like to say that this is what I did, but honestly I just drove to whole foods and bought a bunch of gluten free stuff. It didn't take long to discover that those gluten free processed foods were also making...
  12. To keep this about gluten somewhat: You should have a gluten free house. This is the one place you can feel safe from gluten and you should know that all the food coming out of your kitchen should be safe. I hope your fiance respects this when you get married. I support everything previous posters have written. I recommend a book called The Gift of...
  13. The vitamins B and D, plus iron supplements help me a lot. A few weeks ago I was trying to give up coffee. So I switched to tea. I noticed that I was having brain fog, not terrible, but feeling a little "drunk" and out of it. So I switched back to coffee and I feel better. I don't think it was caffeine withdrawal b/c my coffee is mostly decaf. I believe...
  14. I think you could be sitting on a gold mine! I had to learn to cook everything from scratch when I went gluten free. I hated to cook, now I love it love it love it! BUT I would give anything to have your background, plus you obviously started out with a passion for food that I had to discover late in life. Ideas: Gluten free restaurant, gluten free...
  15. Phew! I was really worried about you. You will have a wonderful wedding, you'll feel healthy and have an awesome honeymoon. This will be one of the very best times of your life. Congratulations and have fun!
  16. I was going to let this go, because even after hearing other's experiences about their own weddings/honeymoons, or that first glutening after being gluten free I can see you are still determined to have the cake. I remember for MONTHS after going gluten free having to come to terms with a life without pizza or a cheeseburger ever again...at least not the...

    ARCHIVED Was I Wrong?

This is a toughie, and we have the same issue with visiting parents and in-laws here too. The house is mostly gluten free, although every once in awhile my husband will bake something for himself. As far as visitors, we haven't been made sick yet so I guess we're being pretty careful. I am very close to declaring a gluten free house though. A couple...
  18. Yes...that's weird that you mention it. Since I've been gluten free, one time I was glutened from a soup (clam chowder which would have had two of my culprits: dairy and gluten) and ended up in bed for 3 weeks, with joint pain and a DH rash. And soy sauce made me extremely sick when I ate it (before I went gluten free). I had a hard time figuring that...
  19. Cautionary tale: I went gluten and dairy free as part of a cleanse, because I'd been feeling like utter crapola for several years. After trying the diet for 2 weeks I thought that gluten was just too hard, so I kept testing it and kept getting sick. So, I decided that being gluten/dairy free was just the price I'd have to pay to feel wonderful. At that...
  20. Ceara, I am in Minneapolis. I don't think there are a lot of Minnesotans on this board, although there are a couple. Last year (in 2010) at the State Fair my husband and I stopped by a booth (in the building where they'll check blood pressure, check health issues etc...) and we found a booth that listed all the gluten free foods at the fair. It was run...
  21. Oh, Nikky, I am sorry. You're younger than I even realized. I know it's hard when everyone is still living with parents. Just be careful (I know you will be) and try and not eat anything she prepares. She sounds just abusive.
  22. Oh, and re: spreading bread crumbs in your food? O.M.G. I wouldn't be in the same room with that witch. I'm assuming you are younger (sorry if you're not), but writing as a middle aged woman who has BTDT, I would seriously think about marrying into that family. Marriage and kids is a long and stressful marathon, and bad in-laws can make your life hell...
  23. Well, I know others here will have advice for getting things checked, like thyroid or vitamin deficiencies. I did have to give up coffee (mostly) to feel better, and I feel best (like athlete form) when I am grain free, dairy free, soy free, drinking very little coffee and alcohol and taking B complex, iron supplement and 5000 iu of vitamin D/day. Plus...
  24. TOTALLY agree. I never ever ever rely on anybody else to feed me no matter where I go (I mean at someone else's house). I bring my own food. If it's my parents (mom is gluten free so it's not a big deal there) or my in laws, all I ask is that I can go shopping for my own food as soon as I get there, and can I store it somewhere and can I cook my own food...
  25. I agree with both you and Gemini. I have also sat and listened to people complain about a host of symptoms and realized they don't want to hear that it might be worth a try to go gluten free for a couple of weeks. They think I'm crazy even though I suffered from the exact same symptoms for years. I cannot understand why people won't even attempt to feel...
