ARCHIVED Making Fun Of Gluten Issues On New Cbs Show
srall replied to Kate79's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was watching that too, and shut the t.v. off right after that joke. Not watching that show. I don't mind being the butt of a joke, but my biggest fear is eating out and having the server not take me seriously. Or my 8 year old. It really just makes it so dangerous for all of us to have that opinion passed off as humor. I've been on vacation... -

ARCHIVED There Needs To Be A "success Story" Forum Category
srall replied to Twizzel's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree. I've been active for awhile, and sometimes don't visit the boards for long periods of time. But I do like to check in periodically, even when I'm doing well, because the people on this board have provided more honest and accurate information than any doctor. Another reason this board is so helpful is that my daughter and I are also dairy/corn... -
Note to self: "Stay out of prison."

That is my reaction to both gluten and dairy. So, it really could be either. And yes, it can take several days before you feel better. Try keeping the dairy and gluten out of the diet for awhile, then maybe just test dairy. Hopefully you can figure it out.

ARCHIVED Guests Who Ask For My Food
srall replied to Finally-45's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This came up a lot with my daughter who is now 8. She was diagnosed at 7. I agree it's hard to give 4 kids a Lara bar each when they can be $2.00 a piece. I started buying other granola bars and just said, my daughter can't eat those, so I'm going to give her a gluten free bar. Usually they don't want the gluten free stuff anyway. And it is so irritating... -
I do get pain in my left foot but it sounds a little different that what you get. It's nerve pain in the bottom of my foot that will shoot up my leg. Often it's accompanied by joint pain and a pain and tightness in my neck. I can usually trace this to dairy. It happens on vacation a lot when I decide to have coffee with a little cream, drink a little...

ARCHIVED Do You Worry About Restaurants That Claim Gluten Free Meals ? M)
srall replied to carecare's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I agree about eating at a pizza place. Before my daughter went gluten free I took her to a pizza place and I just ordered a salad. (I was gluten free then). My lymph nodes were so swollen after that and I could tell I was glutened. I really only eat out when I travel, or on a date with my husband. We have safe restaurants that we stick to. Our new... -

ARCHIVED Sometimes I Want To Just Smack Doctors
srall replied to T.H.'s topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Shauna, I have a lot to say on this issue, but I really think it just echoes the advice and sentiments of the other posters and you. I actually took my daughter off of gluten and dairy three weeks before her appointment with her pediatrician because we could not go ONE MORE DAY with her in pain The last gluten I gave her was at a school potluck and she... -

ARCHIVED Reflecting Now, Do You Wonder If You Were Ever Healthy?
srall replied to AVR1962's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think mine was triggered by my pregnancy at 35 so I really did have a history of being pretty healthy. My 8 year old daughter however, would have had your childhood had I not realized what was going on with her. She was chronically sick. Strep all the time (I've never had strep once, nor has her dad), high fevers that would spike to 105 degrees and not... -

ARCHIVED What Symptoms Did You Not Even Realize Were Symptoms?
srall replied to smeej's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I knew my stomach was killing me all the time, but until I went gluten free/casein free I did not realize that it affected my fertility, arthritis, chronic fatigue, cavities, nerve pain, dry skin, moods (rage right before my period), general confusion, lack of motivation, anxiety...I know I'm forgetting some things. This diet has over the past two years... -
I haven't visited this forum for so long, but I was on yesterday and realized this thread kept going after I left for England. WE had a fabulous time. Weirdly I thought it was easier to eat gluten free in the country-side than London. We stayed a few days in Bakewell, and every restaurant had gluten free options, and advertised them. I wondered if they...

Oh Karen, I think my husband would have my head. I promise I'll give a full report.

We're taking the Themes to Hampton Court. I'm VERY excited about that!

I'm still here...we leave at 9:30 tonight. I'm checking in while I eat my beans and rice that I made for the plane. Man, I spent the whole morning making bread and beans and rice...and cleaning the stupid kitchen. On top of breakfast for the family FROM SCRATCH of course. It will be nice to have a few days where I have no choice but to eat in restaurants...

ARCHIVED I'm Sick And Tired Of It!
srall replied to BeHappy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
ON top of ever one already mentioned, I am sick and tired of the fact that every time we take a trip or go to a party I spend the day in the kitchen preparing food instead of getting ready. We're leaving town tonight for a trip and I'm in the kitchen making bread and beans and rice...not to mention all the clothes I have to leave behind so I have room in... -
My goodness, thanks for all the info. I'll print out your post Gemini. I have been to London but never gluten free. We will be in London for 10 days, 4 days in Bakewell and one day at Warwick Castle. Our B & B in Bakewell has assured us that gluten free is no prob. It looks like there are a lot of cute little restaurants in the area too so we'll...

I called the airline (Delta) and was told I could bring any food from home, just no liquids. So, that was my biggest worry. I am not going to request a meal on the flight just because I agree that it probably is going to be gross, and it's just safer to feed myself and my 8 year old. Her especially because her behavior breaks down when she eats something...

Hi all, I'm sure this has been asked a lot on this forum, but I'm stressing because we are leaving tomorrow and I have a ton to do so I don't want to do a search (sorry). My daughter and I are gluten/dairy/corn free. I'm trusting that once we're in England I'll be able to shop for food and order meat and a vegetable in a restaurant, but I'm wondering...

I did not have a celiac diagnosis. Based on the copious amounts of research I've done in the past year, including personal stories from people here, as well as some conversations with my daughter's pediatrician and my doc, I now believe there is a completely separate category that is gluten intolerance/sensitivity. I "knew" this before but now I KNOW it...

				ARCHIVED Coping With Uninformed People
srall replied to JaniceS's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Your post made me laugh a little, even though I can totally understand and sympathize with your frustration. Most people here in Minneapolis are getting the gluten free thing, but I constantly overhear people talking about the "new fad" in a scoffing manner. Oh well....I can't worry about that. I've got too many other things to worry about like preparing... -
I like how CassP said she has "gluten light" symptoms from gluten free grains. I feel the same way. I went all the way grain free and some nagging symptoms cleared all the way, like minor joint pain, some allergy symptoms and I had increased energy. Since my daughter's been home from school this summer I've been baking a lot more for her meals, and I...

ARCHIVED My First Trip To The Mil's Since Diagnosis
srall replied to SnoBaby's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This post makes me wonder if perhaps you are my SIL and I didn't know you were on this board...(JK) But this sounds a lot like my MIL. SAME experiences, esp the "Hoping the visiting toddler didn't touch anything at her eye level" -
You're "lucky" that you are able to narrow down what's making you sick. I just had a general feeling of blah and I couldn't figure out where it was coming from. I hope losing the nightshades helps you. It sounds like that's the culprit. Good luck.
 -
Sensitivity to nightshades is real and a lot of people here really suffer from their effects. But I'll give you something to consider. I blamed nightshades for my residual joint pain and rosacea for a year and kept trying to give them up. At some point I decided to try a completely grain free diet and I discovered that the grains were causing my pain and...

ARCHIVED My First Trip To The Mil's Since Diagnosis
srall replied to SnoBaby's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree that your MIL should have been warned even if you were planning on supplying your own food. I've been at this for over a year now and bless my friends' hearts...eating with them is still such a big deal even though I beg them to please just let me prepare and bring my own food they still try and make sure everything prepared is safe for me. This...
