  1. Thinking about the depression and sores....It just occurred to me that Job of the Bible might be one of our earliest descriptons of a Celiac with DH....not trying to impose religion...just saying....there's an awful lot of similarities there...hmmm
  2. To OP: I am sooo sorry. I was writing so much I missed your comments about being suicidal and my post ended up directly following those comments saying That is wonderful! I apologize for that appearing right after your self-disclosure about wanting to end it all. I meant wonderful that we would be having a picture bank of DH... So sorry you had to go...
  3. To the OP and Squirming FYI- I got weak and convinced my Dr. to let me try Dapsone. It worked like a miracle the first week! The second week I started to feel spacey and dizzy as the dose went up the third week to 100 mg.... I broke out all over in pinpoint raised red dots rash all over my body and very obvious livedo reticularis which is when the veins on...
  4. That is wonderful! I didn't know about the photo bank but that is a great idea! My DH is gone...but I could take pictures of the white de-pigmented spots where the sores were. This too, is typical of DH. I do so feel for those still coping with active DH. It plagued me for 8 years. It took 14 months gluten and iodine free to heal it. Squirming...I appreciate...
  5. Blasphemy I know...but I fry in lard! Don't tell anyone but it makes everything crispy! Now then, if only I could find organic lard without preservatives! I loved this thread! I learned how to make Mozarella fried cheese sticks which we dearly miss! And I just now decided to try making chicken nuggets by processing chicken breast meat with Better...
  6. The maddening itch of DH is like no other affliction on earth that I have ever read described in any medical literature. Your description of the itching would be consistent with DH. As for how the rash appears, there are many presentations and mine never looked like the photo's online. However, it all healed after 14 months gluten free. Mine took a really...
  7. Some Celiacs react to the gluten in oats. If the oats were made in a dedicated gluten free facility then this might be the case for you. If they were not made in a dedicated gluten free facility then they likely contain gluten, as virtually all oats are contaminated with wheat unless they say they were made in a gluten free facility. I would only eat...
  8. Walgreens Pain Relieving Ointment works too. It is 20% Benzocaine. Saved my life many a night. Good luck.
  9. Do you take any medications on a regular basis? Many medications can cause photosensitivity. Salicylates caused me to have severe photosensitivity complete with rashes. I took Ibuprofen all the time for "Fibromyalgia" and migraine headaches. I constantly had fatigue and flu-like symptoms. Repeatedly tested negative for Lupus, BUT after googling Salicylate...
  10. I could not have written a better description of what I experienced internally most of my life. I have been gluten free for almost 2 years. I don't have those episodes, thoughts, or feelings at all anymore...unless...I have gotten traces of gluten. If what you are experiencing is related to gluten, you will have to become extremely careful about cross-contamination...
  11. I feel for you. It took me over a year to heal my DH. I kept wanting to eat eggs but absolutely could not. Iodine content I guess. You can use salt. But do not use sea salt, or iodized salt. Some people say sea salt is ok, but Peter Greene says anything from the sea contains iodine..I found I could not use it. It caused as bad a reaction as if I had eaten...
  12. Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link NSAIDS made my DH go absolutely crazy. I was taking NSAIDS for the pain of DH. Wow. It made sense when I googled DH and NSAIDS There are several articles. Also, 1/100 are intolerant/allergic to aspirin or salicylates. 1/133 are Celiac. Salicylate sensitivity and Celiac?....means you win the...
  13. It makes me soooo angry to read this. I'm sorry you had that experience. I was treated that way too, only I didn't know I had DH...or about Celiac...I just really wanted a biopsy...to find out what was going on. THe derms I saw...said you have neurotic excoriation and you need to stop picking on your skin. I was furious.... another insisted it was acne.....
  14. I agree with Takala 100%. I was a very sick Celiac girl. The first year I went gluten free, I healed but slowly and still had a lot of inflammation. I eliminated grains and went Paleo the second year. (see Mark's Daily Apple.com if you are interested.) My muscle function and tone improved dramatically and quickly. I lost a lot of weight but wasn't trying...
  15. I was a 200 lb Celiac at my sickest. Diagnosed with fibromyalgia....with sores... Yeah, it was Celiac DH. The first year gluten free...didn't want to give up dairy but I was losing weight and getting healthier...so I didn't worry about it. Started to suspect dairy. Went dairy free at one year gluten free...pretty much exactly like you... found that...
  16. I too, had rashes that did not occur in the typical places for Celiac DH. I was on anti-fungals, aniti-virals, anti-bacterials, and finally they said it was neurotic excoriation. It went away but only after 14 months totally gluten free. I went Paleo and it all went away...including depression and anxiety, migraines and muscle weakness. I say if the rash...
  17. thank you Dilettanesteph for the info about nuts.con and washing nuts. I never thought I'd see the day when I sit and crack nuts and then wash them and still feel apprehensive about eating them! Life as a Celiac is certainly interesting.... Prickly- My God! You have a great memory if you remember that I don't have Trader Joe's!! I will look into them...
  18. Yeah, I bought cashews there too. It doesn't say anything on the package of cashews. But that doesn't mean anything really. They just didn't have the money to put a fancy label on them. Where do y'all get your nuts?? I used to get them at Nuts.com But I can't afford the shipping right now. I got Diamond walnuts in the shell. Even that bag has processed...
  19. Thank you everyone! You are right. Not worth it. My God...can you imagine if I got a DH outbreak again? I'm going to try to take them back. I buy stuff all the time there. If not I will give them away! Thanks to all of you. I lost my mind if I thought to eat them! Thanks for being the voice of reason. It's only money...jeez!
  20. I know that I react to all products I have tried that are processed in a facility that also processes wheat. I know everyone has to find their own level of sensitivity, and in doing so, I have found that I always react when a product is made in a facility where wheat is handled. Here is the issue/question. I bought a large bag of raw almonds at an Eastern...
  21. You can do gluten-free on a budget. I am severely limited on money for food, but I make it. I have DH and I will never go back to gluten. You have got to do this if what you have is DH. I had it for 7 years and now I am free of the rash but it took me a year and half to heal completely. I didn't get any answers from all the Dr.'s and dermatologists I...
  22. If you were gluten free for any length of time, the antibodies could have died down. It is one of the reasons they used to think children outgrew Celiac. At some point they appeared to be able to eat gluten again. But then they noticed that these kids are the ones who developed the secondary autoimmune diseases and cancers associated with Celiac. Don...
  23. Iodine can keep the DH active. I didn't heal until I eliminated all traces of gluten and went low iodine. It took me 14 months to get healed. As Peter says, look for traces of gluten. I missed several things and was always surprised at what a violent reaction my DH would have even to low level trace glutening. See thyca.com for a low iodine diet. (it is...
  24. Could it be cross-contamination? Do they use wheat flour in the that kitchen? If so, very likely to be cross-contamination in my opinion.
  25. While there is gluten in the other grains, the gluten is supposed to be different from the gluten in wheat, barley and rye. Most Celiac's can eat the other grains. Some people react to oats and some to corn. Having said that, I'm with you. I'm grain-free for the most part. I do celebrate with some desserts that have grain flours in them, but only once...
