  1. Have you tried buckwheat (not related to wheat despite the name) or flaxseed? Those two don't bother me at all. Soy in large quantities makes me feel ill. I avoid potatos and rice because they cause me to get bloated and gain weight. It could be the starch that is causing problems.
  2. It is the most wonderful feeling when the same people who used to complain that I couldn't keep up with them now complain that they can't keep up with me.

    ARCHIVED Documentary Show

I had few gut issues, it was all weight, mental and fatigue issues. The brain fog would get so bad I was like a zombie sometimes.
  4. I have noticed that if I eat very little that I actually gain weight. I have a lot of stress going on right now and find it difficult to stomach food when I am stressed so I don't eat much.

    ARCHIVED Ironic

I am the prototype for that guy.
  6. Here is a story you can tell your husband. My ex-wife refused to understand or deal with my celiac disease so we got divorced. My health improved, I lost weight (I was obese) and I have never been healthier. I am 38. Almost lost my job now my career is going well. Ex-wife mentioned to her smokin' hot friend one time that I had some stupid psychosomatic...

    ARCHIVED Ironic

I got my Bachelors degree from University of Phoenix by taking mostly online classes and got far more out of them than any "real" in-person class I have ever taken. In person, real-time conversations are really difficult for me sometimes because my mind likes to think things through first. Unfortunately conversations can't wait for me to think for two days...
  8. Your daughter has great wisdom for a 4 year old. What she says is true. Right before I was diagnosed my life was ready to implode. Almost two years later and it has never been better.
  9. I was 36 and on the verge of losing everything. You are one of the lucky ones to have been diagnosed so young.

    ARCHIVED Anger

I have to take a walk or ride a bike when the anger hits. Talking about it only makes it worse.
  11. My girlfriend made some gluten-free cookies yesterday and they were pretty good. I used the rest to re-tile the foyer in my house. Oh man is that one going to cost me but I just couldn't resist.
  12. That is exactly how I get when glutened. After reading Dangerous Grains I never had the desire to eat a donut ever again.
  13. This disease is not an easy one to pin down and it is not the same for everyone. I do not get any serious gastro problems when I get glutened but I do get crippling brain fog and fatigue. I was also obese and now I am at a healthy weight. All of that went away when I stopped eating gluten. I don't have a formal diagnosis but it is so obvious what theproblem...

    ARCHIVED Anger

Swittenauer, your husband sounds like me when I get glutened. Normally I am very in control and very few things bother. Even a little gluten causes me to start losing control. It is hard to stop it or even realize it when it is happening.
  15. Ursula, there are a lot of self diagnosed celiacs here and I am one of them. If avoiding certain foods makes you feel better then that is all you really need to know. There is no magic pill for celiac disease.
  16. It is pretty typical for online forums to have lots of members but only a handful that post. I jumped right in but I also believe very strongly that everyone does have a right to my opinion.
  17. It does get better and I am living proof of that. In early 2004 I was days away from losing a job that I had been at for nearly 15 years. A new boss had started when my celiac disease was raging out of control and I had no clue as to what was wrong. The boss told me I was the sorriest loser he had ever known. I was obese and my health was a mess. I am convinced...
  18. Extreme brain fog, almost zombie like. Fatigue Weight gain and I bloat up like a balloon Fortunatley it takes a fair amount of gluten to really knock me out. Very small amounts trigger the same symptoms but I can still function just not at %100 efficiancy.
  19. There is no better source of information and support than this forum.
  20. I have a very high tolerance for cold and can't stand hot weather at all. In the winter I keep my thermostat at 62 and still wear shorts and a t-shirt.
  21. When I was on gluten I always had a low grade fever from 100-102. Now that I am gluten-free my body temp is always 93-94.
  22. I bloat up like a baloon and gain weight. Have to work that weight off later.
  23. My son has a classmate with really severe celiac disease and all of the kids understand it and look out for him. It is the dopey adults that don't get it.
  24. I got progressively worse before I knew what the problem was. Fatigue and crippling brain fog were the main problem. I didn't have to many gut problems.
  25. I wouldn't say it "cured" my obesity but it certainly explained why I had gained so much weight and couldn't lose it until I went gluten-free. I have to carefully watch what I eat and control my portions plus lots of exerecise are required to maintain a healthy weight. It is a lot of work but consider the alternative.
