The really funny part is that I was with a bunch of geeky engineers and they immediatley took notice. One of them asked "So this celiac thing,... umm, how do you get it?" I said you have to be born with it. The look of devastation on their faces was hilarious. I told my girlfriend about this and said I don't want a bunch of geeky engineers nerding up the...

I always ask what they are planning to serve and then explain the situation. I then tell them what I can eat and how it shoudl be prepared. Most of the people I know now seem to get it. If they really don't get it I just decline the invitation.

ARCHIVED New Here -diet Question
ianm replied to SusanRachel's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Oatmeal is off limits and I have never had problems with Chinese food. I guess it depends upon the restaurant. -
I want a beer. I am learning to appreciate wine but it just ain't the same as a tall, cold frosty, smooth as a mountain stream type adult beverage. Come on Whole Foods get that gluten-free beer. I also wouldn't mind a big, slimey, greasy wet burrito. Saw one today and it looked pretty good.

It depends upon what time of day you post and what question you are asking. In a forum like this it can take a while for a response.

The same thing happened to me today. I went to lunch with a group of people and I ordered a salad and said no croutons and asked about some of the other foods. The waitress asked if I was on a low carb diet and I said I have celiac and can't have wheat. She said one of the other waitresses there does too. Any way the celiac waitress brought my food out and...

Chap, I found out about celiac when I tried the Atkins diet two years ago. On a low carb diet you don't eat grains. The brain fog cleared within a few days and the fatigue started to lift within a week. It has been two years and I now consider myself healthy. Everyone used to complain that I was a useless space case and that I could never keep up. Now...

ARCHIVED How Do We Get The Word Out To The Doctors?
ianm replied to floridanative's topic in Publications & Publicity
Karen, your fishing trip is oficially over. We're lost without you. Pressuring the insurance companies is the best way to go. The reason that doctors won't test for or acknowledge celiac is because the INSURANCE COMPANIES are forcing them to limit patient visits to 10-15 minutes, write a prescription(s) and send them out the door. If we can convince insurance... -
Ahh good ol' brain fog. A little bit of gluten and I am totally useless. Can't think my way out of a wet paper bag. I suffered with brain fog for 36 years and it nearly destroyed everything in my life. Are you 100% gluten free? I am very vigilant about the diet and have not had any major brain fog for a good 10 months. sounds to me like your still getting...

The fist sized portion has merit because your stomach is not much bigger than that. I find that if I eat much more than that I have less energy not nore. As long as you burn more calories than you consume you will lose weight. Exercise is the key, if your not moving your not burning off that fat.

Cheating just isn't an option. I don't ever want to be that sick, fat or have my brain fogged up like that ever again.

ARCHIVED Could I Be Anymore Pathetic
ianm replied to Firegirl43's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome DingoGirl. I just don't eat bread anymore because I don't like expensive cardboard. For me I just stick with fruit, veggies, meat, cheese and yogurt along with buckwheat and flaxseed. The gluten free processed stuff is just too expensive. -
I only take it when I can't sleep or really need to be rested up for the next day. If I take it every night I seem to build up a tolerance to it. I haven't noticed anything unusual if I wake up during the night.

Wow you sound just like me two years ago. Are you sure that you are not getting any hidden gluten? Are there any other food intolerances? Like some of the others have said you may not have been gluten-free long enough to notice a difference yet. I know exactly what it is like to experience massive brain fog.

Karen, The personal attacks on you are totally uncalled for. You are a breath of fresh air and a beacon of hope and support for so many of us. You are always there to provide support, information and a much needed sense of humor. What I have found in my journeys is that some people are repulsed by positive behavior in the same manner that most of us are...

I take it from time to time and it really works. It doesn't give me that drugged out sleep you get with other sleep aids. Never had any side effects or other problems with it.

ARCHIVED Corn Gluten
ianm replied to Nashville's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Sounds like a challenge to me. -
I do not feel a hatred for doctors but a great disappointment in the American medical system. It is totally profit driven and because of this attracts the wrong kind of people. This also makes it difficult if not impossible for the good ones to do their job properly. I have two cousins who are doctors and they even admit that 75% of their med school training...

My experience with doctors is that most of them are only in it for the money now. Being a doctor USED TO BE a noble calling but not anymore. It has become a way for drug companies to push pills that only mask the symptoms but never cure the disease. There are some good doctors that are truly interested in the welfare of thier patients but they are few and...

ARCHIVED Ordering Gf Beer
ianm replied to DoctorDave's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think Whole Foods is going to start carrying at least one gluten free beer for the whole chain. They wouldn't tell me the brand but others have mentioned Grist. -
I have not had any real problems with this. I just explain that plain meat, fruit and veggies is okay with me. Most of the time people will accomodate. If someone really doesn't get it then I just pass on it.

I used to be a binge eater both pre and post gluten-free but not anymore. My body has reached a point where I can only eat just so much. If I go beyond that point I pay a steep price. It took time and discipline but I overcame it. For me I changed my attitude from living to eat to eating to live.

ARCHIVED How Were You Diagnosed?
ianm replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Had to figuire it out for myself. The doctors just wanted to take my insurance company for a ride and pump me full of drugs.
