  1. You sound just like me at the beginning of 2004. I was days away from losing my job when I finally discovered what was wrong with me. I was 36 then. You probably won't get much, if any help from a dietician. Most of them are pretty clueless about this disease. I started feeling better right away but "better" for me would still be pretty crappy for anyone...
  2. Janemc, The Atkins diet is what led to the discovery of celiac for me. I can't eat a lot of sugar or starchy carbs even if they are gluten-free. I gain weight real fast if I do. There a lot more of us weight gaining celiacs than you might think.
  3. Weight gain was one of my celiac symptoms to the point of being obese. Once I went gluten-free the weight came off pretty easy. I still have to watch what I eat and exercise a lot to maintain a healthy weight.
  4. I used to get mouth ulcers frequently but haven't had one since I went gluten-free.

    ARCHIVED Tgifridays

Never had a problem with TGIFridays.
  6. I you got it flaunt it, whatever it takes to get the word out.
  7. Get a note from your doctor describing exactly what the problem is. Second call a lawyer. Even though your employer is a family owned business it is large enough where what they are doing is very illegal. Family owned businesses tend to be very ignorant of employment laws.
  8. I wave my celiac flag high and proud. I used to be obese and my life was an absolute disaster because of it. I don't have a formal diagnosis and don't need to because it is so obvious what the problem was. I tell everyone wether they want to hear it or not that I can't eat wheat. If they don't like it or get offended I really don't care. It is my body and...
  9. 1. Newcastle Brown Ale 2. Guiness Stout 3. Two-Hearted Ale I was becoming such a good beer snob and being a wine snob is a lot harder to do. Other than that I don't miss anything derived from grains at all.
  10. I don't buy any specialty gluten-free foods. I eat only natural whole foods. I find that by eating unprocessed food I don't eat nearly as much as I used to. I also used to be very overweight and have to control my portions carefully. The net result of this dietary change is my grocery bill went way down. The price of the specialty gluten-free foods is simply...
  11. I've come to the sad conclusion that most people really are stupid. So many people just don't get it. But the bright side is that I have had some really great people come into my life once I went gluten free. I have licked a LOT of people out of my life because of their stupidity. But the new people are of such greater intelligence and quality that it more...
  12. If everyone in the US was tested for celiac disease and went on a gluten free diet the the drug companies would go out of business. It is not in their financial interest for us to get healthy. We get fatter and sicker and that suites the medical establishment just fine.
  13. I used to be obese and am now a healthy weight and I can tell what to expect. Watch your portions very carfully and eat mostly green veggies, low fructose fruits like berries and protien rich foods. These foods digest slowly and you won't eat as much. No processed sugar or junk food at all. Drink lots of water too. EXERCISE IS MANDATORY. Dieting alone will...
  14. I don't have any faith in doctors when it comes to celiac disease. I was not rail thin I was obese and there are others here who are or were overweight. All the doctors wanted to do for me was write lots of prescriptions. Find another doctor and if that doesn't work you can always try the gluten-free diet anyway and if that makes you feel better then that...
  15. You need to give it more time. I used to get colds and the flu frequently prior to going gluten-free but that doesn't seem to happen anymore. I would get very fatigued in stressful situations but now what I experience would probably be considered normal for anyone. Like I and others have said it will take a good year to really be healthy. You didn't get sick...
  16. I had rapid and irregular heartbeat prior to gluten-free but it is not a problem anymore.
  17. The thing about weight training is I hate doing it and am really sore afterwards but I sleep so much better when I do. When I get up the next morning I feel like a million bucks. I do lifting every other day and if I go any longer than that with no lifting I start to feel fatigued and worn out. So I keep lifting them because a little pain now results in a...

    ARCHIVED Funeral Food

Sorry for your loss. I had a very close friend die a couple of months ago and as hard as it is you need to take care of yourself also. During stressful times it is even more important to eat right and exercise. Your body needs that even more when it is stressed. Eat well before the funeral and stick to the foods you know will be gluten-free like fruits and...
  19. Your boyfriend sounds like my ex-wife. That is why she is an EX and NOT a wife anymore. I stay on the diet by sheer force of will. I NEVER want to be that sick or fat ever again. I eat only what I can safely eat and THAT IS IT! There will be no debate or discussion about it at all. If the other person has a problem with it then they are out of the picture...
  20. I've been called far worse things than a celiac a whole lot more than a few times. Anymore I just don't want to be called late for dinner, gluten free of course.
  21. Actually I agree with what you said. I think we spend WAY too much time obsessing over food. We use it as a comforting tool when it is really just fuel for our bodies. The more interests you develop in other areas the less you will obsess about food. I know that when I have nothing to do I tend to gravitate towards the kitchen.
  22. celiac disease does not go away but it can go into remission. For me it would come and go during my teens. In my mid 20's it started going away less and in my 30's it was raging out of control non-stop. When I eat gluten I get fatigue and crippling brain fog. I just tell people it makes me very sick and that I just cannot function normally when I eat it....

    ARCHIVED Lower Back Pain

I used to have a chronic, dull pain in my lower back. I don't know if it is celiac related because I used to be very overwight and that was celiac related. Since I went gluten-free and lost the weight the back pain is gone. Seems to me there were some other posts asking the same question so there could be some link.
  24. I can see where this lifestyle would be very difficult for the ones who don't have any symptoms or have only had them for a short period of time. For me it was the opposite. I had lots of symptoms for most of my life and almost lost everything because I just couldn't function. I was so desperate that I was willing to do whatever it took to make it go away...

    ARCHIVED Brain Fog

When I would get really bad brain fog it was like an out of body experience. I could see and hear everything going on around me but would be unable to connect with reality. It was also like having my head sealed in an airtight box. Nothing could get in or go out. Like some of the others there were times I just could not drive and had some way too close calls...
