  1. I doesn't bother me because people seem to get it more when it is called an allergy. To many people an intolerance means that it is no big deal so shut up and eat your donut. In defense of the Atkins diet that was how I found out I was gluten intolerant or allergic, whichever term you prefer.
  2. I used to get them so bad I had to put a plastic cover on my mattress and would wake up in a puddle of sweat an inch or more deep . Since going gluten-free I haven't had them at all except for one time I got glutened.
  3. I gained a LOT of weight so don't listen to the doctors when they say that only weight loss occurs with Celiac.
  4. Thimbleberries are related to raspberries and have a very intense flavor. They are common in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and parts of Canada. Bears like them a lot so keep your eyes open. Had a couple of close calls. My backyard is full of black raspberries and are my favorite. They are not sweet and somewhat sour but oh so good. I never can or freeze...
  5. Sex: Male Age: 37 Date started gluten free diet: March 2004 Suffer from the following on a regular basis since starting treatment: Constipation: Rarely Diarrhoea: Only once since March 2004 Abdominal pain: Never Indigestion: Never Acid reflux: Never Other related problems: Have become very healthy since going gluten free. 6. I used to eat oats nearly everyday. I ate far more oats than I did wheat and was very ill. Some of us may be able to eat oats with no problem but I will stay away from them.
  7. Stephanie, I live in Michigan, one of the fattest states in the US. I can't count the number of vegetarians who have told me meat is bad for me while lighting up their second pack of the day.
  8. For me the symptoms seemed to have been there since day 1. Sometimes they would get real bad and sometimes it went into remission. It wasn't until my mid-20's that it became chronic and by my early 30's I was in real bad shape. The level of symptoms can vary but sooner or later they do catch up with you.
  9. I'm not so sure about that one. Most, but not all, of the women I know eat nothing but processed junk food and don't exercise. Most, but not all, of the men I know eat healthy foods and exercise regularly. My ex would hardly ever eat anything that even contained one natural ingredient in it. Maybe I just live in an area where everything is the opposite from...
  10. Sucralose or Splenda is real sugar that is modified using chlorine as a catalyst. I have not had any reaction to Splenda but aspartame sometimes gets my stomach churning.
  11. When I eat gluten I gain weight, get gas and bloating. The symptoms of gluten intolerance can vary widely from one person to the next. Have you eliminated all gluten from your diet?
  12. So what you are saying is guns don't kill people, doctors do. I'm no fan of doctors but I think the root cause of a lot of problems with the American medical establishment is that it is driven by the drug companies. In my experience if a pill doesn't exist for a disease then that disease does not exist.
  13. We must enjoy all things in moderation because it doesn't taste as good coming back up as it did going down.
  14. Only 34. I didn't find out until I was 36 and I basically felt like crap for most of them. This isn't the end of the world and it takes some time to get the hang of it. My life and health are so much better now. You actually have so many things to look forward to now that you can get on the road to good health. This site is the best place for information...
  15. Only 3000 hours? Thats actually pretty fast. Why do men like to grill. FIRE and animal carcasses! Now thats manly.

    ARCHIVED Dating

For me if they don't get it then it is usually a good warning sign that this may not be someone I want hanging around. If after another date or two and they still don't get then it is time to look elsewhere.
  17. It was about 4 weeks and then faded over about 6 weeks. I think it was a combination of physical and psyclogical reason.
  18. I have always been the cook and my dad is an excellent cook. My ex couldn't cook to save her life and my mother.. Oops better not go there. . Lets just say there is a reason I learned to cook at an early age.
  19. I went through a period of severe depression after going gluten-free. I'm not sure if it was diet related or the fact that I wasted the first 36 years of my life on something that was so easy to fix. You have been through a lot of stress in a short period of time and it may just take time for you to recover both physically and mentally. Change is always difficult...
  20. The brain fog was just crippling for me. You need to carefully analyze you diet to make sure no hidden gluten is getting in. Are you eating a balanced diet? Are you eating enough protiens and fats to help stabilize your blood sugar? Are you exercizing? I only get brain fog when I accidently get nailed with gluten. It can go away and it is such a great...

    ARCHIVED Grrrr....

I just explain to people all of the serious health problems I used to have when I would eat that crap. More often then not they won't eat that second donut.
  22. Well I really hate to rain on everyone's whine parade but I just don't miss all the crappy, toxic food they serve at fairs and other events. I used to weigh over 250lbs, high blood pressure, borderline diabetes, chronic fatigue, etc. All of those problems are gone and I will gladly eat only the foods I can safely eat. I never want to go back to being who...
  23. At 37 I still don't have any cavities but everyone else in my family has lots of dental problems. The only dental work I ever had was one wisdom tooth pulled because the gum didn't form a seal around the base. I did have braces in my teens because my lower jaw was off center but I doubt that had anything to do with celiac.
  24. The bad breath from a low carb diet comes from your body switching from burning carbs to burning body fat for energy. I experienced this when I went on the Atkins diet. Once I got to the maintenance stage the bad breath went away because you switch from a diet that is mostly fat and protien to one that has a balance of protien, fuits and vegetables. I was...

    ARCHIVED What Else

I think if a child with celiac disease is diagnosed early enough and put on a proper diet then there is likely to be little to worry about. Most of use here did not find out until we were adults which gave gluten plenty of time to wreak havoc in our lives.
