  1. My son used to have canker sores all the time until we changed our diet.
  2. We didn't eliminate dairy, however, we did end up making more major dietary changes. While his joint problems went away with just the gluten, he had other issues as well. His stomach aches, anxiety, terrible allergies, and attention issues were still present. The rest of the family went gluten-free with him, and we all experienced some effects. More research...
  3. I think it makes a lot of sense to talk to the person who organizes these events. It sounds like they are *willing* to make accommodations or do things differently, but just don't quite know how. It seems like they might be able to do a better job of making these events feel inclusive if you came to that person with suggestions such as: - What you...
  4. I'm sorry your test results show damage - but YAY for knowing what the problem is, right? It sounds like you want something warm, sweet and mushy for breakfast We've cut all grains and grain like things, but if you are not doing that you might like buckwheat porridge. Make sure you soak it and rinse it before cooking. I should mention for the recipe...
  5. Our family is doing the GAPS Diet which is based on SCD. The main difference is that there is a lot less sugar involved. Also, there are defined stages of the diet, which you are supposed to move through as your body adjusts to each one, slowly adding one new food at a time. I think there is more focus on probiotic foods as well. As I understand it, it...
  6. Should have added that the alternative to the grain/CAFO meat is meat raised on its natural, organic diet. Also I have nothing against red meat, rather I have a problem with excess in any form.
  7. Gemini, I'm glad you've found what works for you. I think one big factor with meat eating is that so many people who eat it ate eating CAFO meat and/or grain fed meat. I'm on my phone so can't link studies now but it has been shown that this meat is truly different in how it affects our bodies. Regardless, I agree that basing an entire diet on all red meat...
  8. I'm the same way - I just need to learn *everything* when something like this enters my universe. It's hard to say how he will react to your enthusiasm about accommodating his dietary needs. From the way you describe his eating, physical state, and discomfort with talking about it, it sounds to me like maybe he hasn't totally come to terms with his diagnosis...
  9. Wow, I just wrote two huge blog posts on this very topic last week! I hate that some people are so wrapped up in their own idea of what they need to do to be gracious (ie feed you) that they forget to actually pay attention to what would make you feel comfortable, or listen when you articulate it. I can't link to them, but I'll paste in the *long* rant...
  10. I'm not a body builder and didn't get the impression the OP is either. I don't know hardly anything about it so I'll leave the details about that to you. I'm also not a doctor or anything like it, but just someone whose done a lot of reading and research about food. What I do want to respond to is the comment about cholesterol being raised by eating...
  11. Just chiming in - my son's biggest, most obvious symptom was joint pain. Rheumatoid arthitis in his hip is what landed him in the hospital for emergency surgery and ended up setting us on the path that brought us to our conclusion that he has celiac disease. Eliminating gluten took away all his joint and bone pain (as well as other stuff I've posted elsewhere...
  12. I think you've already got your answer. For us, it's absolutely true. We're 99% sure our son has Celiac and that that rest of us don't, but that didn't stop the rest of us from benefiting from a gluten free diet. Here are excerpts from a post I made elsewhere (can't link due to board rules) that explains our family's changes after going gluten-free: ...
  13. Rather than focusing on being low-calorie, I like to focus on being nutrient-dense. We also are completely grain-free and have a very high-veggie, high-protein and high-saturated fat diet which helps with fullness and energy AND weight management. I've never been obese but in the past few years had accepted that my body was just going to be about 20...
  14. YES!!! We figured out my (10.5 year old) son most likely is Celiac and started him gluten free last fall then started the GAPS Diet. The amazing side effect of this process is that in just a few months he went from barely recognizing letters to reading on an 8th grade level! His hyperactivity resolved, too. Our daughter has Tourette's and has had lots...
  15. I'm not for any kind of "food" in powder form. It's so processed it just doesn't seem right to me. We eat a lot of soups now, and the basis of all of them is home-made stock, which is very high in protein. You can make stock from the carcass of just about any animal. Basically, you put it in the pot, cover it with water, and simmer for a couple days. Then...
  16. It sounds like your gut is out of whack. Our family has had great results from the GAPS Diet. It's all about healing the gut. There is a long list of foods to avoid and SOY is definitely one of them. The idea behind this diet is to restore the balance of the flora in your gut, and to seal up a leaky gut. People with leaky guts (that have been damaged, especially...
  17. What kind of headaches are they? When we went off gluten, and especially when we went totally grain free and added probiotic foods one of the symptoms of candida die off was a bad sinus headache - front of head, face, etc. I also got ear aches with it. My partner got eczema flare-ups as well. When the yeast dies off it's got to get out of your system somehow...
  18. Our son is 10.5 and most likely has Celiac (no biopsy, but genetics and symptoms indicate Celiac - I've posted all about it a couple months ago.) We also felt that after going gluten-free not everything was quite right. Also, since our whole family went gluten-free we all realized we'd been sensitive in one way or another to gluten! Anyway, we did more research...
  19. My son is in the same boat, we were planning on starting GAPS to heal our guts and figure out our individual sensitivities. Now I'm going to look into the other elimination diets as well before we commit to one.
  20. Yeah our dr said she couldn't rule out celiac for our daughter but it wasn't as likely. Our son never had the bloodwork for celiac done at all. He had a BUNCH of unrelated bloodwork with his surgery and at the time we didn't know about celiac. Would there be any value in doing bloodwork on him at this point (for future reference)? there is no way we're putting...
  21. I'm still going a little crazy because I thought Kimball Labs would tell us exactly which alleles were present but instead they just tested for DQ2 alpha and beta alleles and DQ8 beta alleles. Even still, we got some good information. My son, (the 10 yo with tummy troubles, anxiety, adhd, bone pain, and surgery for a "septic hip" that didn't turn out to...
  22. I don't know about the others but I want to mention that Kimball Genetics (Labcorp) has free genetic counseling for customers. I talked with a woman there yesterday about Turner's Syndrome and she was very helpful. I plan to call back when I get our celiac screening results (maybe today!) for the kids.
  23. We have decided to make our house gluten-free. We pack our own food everywhere. For my son when we go to a potluck I make him a very generous plate of uncontaminated food we brought to share before anyone else is served.
  24. Yes. I'm still feeling this way. I'm hoping it will pass, and planning on getting tested for deficiencies as well.
  25. I was like that the first several weeks. Cutting gluten and most grains resulted in much less sugar in my diet, and I was craving sugar, ice cream, cookies and feeling super hungry and cranky. The answer is more saturated fats. Avocados, yogurt, (grass fed) beef fat, coconut, etc. Eat more protein and drink more water, too. When I've had something sugary...
