I can not imagine trying to make nut butters by hand. Is there no way you can get a food processor or blender? A thermos is a lifesaver. We use ours constantly. They were well worth the small investment.

I agree that it's not very accurate. Some people's skin is far more reactive than other's, too. Mine barely reacts to anything, but my son's and partner's really does. My guess is that for people who are prone to histamine reactions the skin might be a better indicator.

ARCHIVED Probiotics
domesticactivist replied to bbdailey's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
As for irritation... How much did you take? I've found if your gut is out of whack probiotics can be a shock. Die off of the bad guys happens too fast, releasing toxins. Try taking 1/8 of the recommended dose once you feel better, and increase from there if it feels ok. -
ARCHIVED Probiotics
domesticactivist replied to bbdailey's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
We make fermented foods and also use gutpro. They have a shared facility but test below 5 ppm. They have a new product now with absolutely no fillers. -
Oh, and all the recipes on my site are gaps legal, too

Yay! You all know I'm practically evangelical, too. I've now got a summary of all the stages plus tips of how to get set up plus details of my family's experience of it on the blog linked from my profile. One thing I like about GAPS is that it is more a way of approaching a health problem (gut dysbiosis) and food than just a diet. I'm glad you read the book...

Whole wheat is full of gluten. You are right to be concerned. I think the first thing you need to do is pass on a very reputable source of information about whole wheat containing gluten. The university of chicago has a great celiac research center that explains about celiac and the gluten free diet. I think it is not child abuse to feed them gluten...

ARCHIVED Steroid Use (Even Topical) And Testing
domesticactivist replied to domesticactivist's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yeah, I was shocked to learn it since I hadn't seen it mentioned here and no doctor ever said anything about that. Last year I finally convinced a friend (with family history and clear symptoms) to get her daughter tested and it came back negative... she's been on steroids for ages for her skin! -
ARCHIVED Steroid Use (Even Topical) And Testing
domesticactivist posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
We got follow up testing done for our son, since he's been gluten-free for over a year now, and the lab sent us back info I'd never seen before! We actually got this on the sample submission guidelines for celiac testing from a different lab, to which we were submitting samples for something else (instructions in the same booklet). The instruction book... -

Yes! Eatmeat4good is right on. As for eating meat, my daughter was a vegetarian for 8 years and was seriously squicked by meat (and her dad was vegan much longer than that, and my partner and I had vegetarian stints). This last year simce goind on the GAPS diet we have all been cured of our vegetarian ways. I have a post called Picky Eaters about my daughter... -
ARCHIVED How To Explain That I Don't Want To Eat Out
domesticactivist replied to llama3's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I really like kareng's idea. ps, thanks for checking out my blog (oh, and I just added pictures from this Thanksgiving to the Holidays post). Since you know your relatives just want to do something nice for you, even though it's awkward you probably just need to tell them what you would appreciate more. They love you and will adjust. -
ARCHIVED Questions - Celiac and Pregnancy
domesticactivist replied to kelsie ferguson's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Oh sweetie! I know how sad it can be to go through a miscarriage and I want to give you a hug! The good news is you were able to ge pregnant again and you are doing the right thing for yourself and your baby! I don't have statistics or personal experience in the same exact situation, but even if I did each person is different. I did lose my first pregnancy... -

Forget about the "lean" and start eating full fat whenever you can. It will really help with fullness. Have you considered the gaps diet? You can leave out the dairy and eggs if you have an allergy. Ifit is not a serious IgE allergy you may be able to eventually introduce some forms. I have a post about preparing nuts for eating on my blog that might interest... -

ARCHIVED How To Explain That I Don't Want To Eat Out
domesticactivist replied to llama3's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Have you tried suggesting alternatives? What are the motives behind going out? Could it be they think it will be easier because everyone can have their own plate? Does noone have the space to host? Is it just what they are used to? I have a couple blog posts that might help you: The holidays Going out to eat Crazy diet people 1 2 and 3 They are on the... -
ARCHIVED Super Sensitive Teen
domesticactivist replied to jhuebner's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We had to get rid of everything packaged and found that when we stopped using other grains that cc symptoms went away. (we do the GAPS diet now. There is lots about it on my web site and posted here as well) Usually when my 11 year old gets glutened now it is from being around others who are eating gluten. A school environment is full of gluten on all... -
ARCHIVED Picky 4 Year Old, Transitioning To Gluten-Free
domesticactivist replied to lil'chefy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Just a note on cheese - a lot of people, especially celiacs, have a problem with milk products. Part of a child's "pickiness" is sometimes a physical problem. -
ARCHIVED Cod Liver Oil
domesticactivist replied to thleensd's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
We use the Green Pastures Fermented Emulsified Cod Liver Oil. Open Original Shared Link(less aftertaste, sludgier texture, mint-patty type flavor) and Open Original Shared Link (more burps later, I prefer the flavor) are the flavors we've tried. Surprisingly, we find that taking it from a spoon is better than from a syringe. -

As for school, you will be much more likely to get good accommodations if you have an official diagnosis. As others suggested, please get testing done before trying the diet! There are lots of posts on here about dealing with gluten in the classroom. Happy reading! -

ARCHIVED Does Anyone Else Stink?
domesticactivist replied to domesticactivist's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yeah, but watching labels I see that the amount in bread is a lot more variable that the 4.8 cited in the article. You'd think the medical folks would have an actual guideline in grams for people to follow. I'm just making it up as I go along and hoping for the best. -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Else Stink?
domesticactivist replied to domesticactivist's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks for the kind words, everyone. As for the 20 grams, I extrapolated that number from this article and it seemed like a good place to start: https://www.celiac.com/articles/38/1/How-much-gluten-is-in-a-normal-diet-and-how-much-does-it-take-to-cause-damage-in-a-celiac/Page1.html -
ARCHIVED Newbie
domesticactivist replied to anrutherford's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi and welcome! I really hope you will heed their advice and get blood tests for the whole family before going gluten-free. We went gluten-free over a year ago due to our son's issues. You can read about it on the blog linked from my profile ("Our Story" outlines why we went gluten free and then on GAPS, and then I have lots of blog posts about our experience... -

We've been gluten free over a year now and my kids (ages 11 and 12) have adjusted very well. They go to sleepovers, sleep away camps, classes... basically anywhere they want to go. The difference is we send all their food. They have permission to snack on fresh fruit and veggies that are offered in a pinch, if they wash them first. There have been a couple...
