  1. My (very picky) kids and husband like the hamburger buns from Easy Gluten Free Baking. My gluten-eating brother-in-law and father-in-law like them, too. They don't really get very brown in the oven for me and the texture is kind of biscuit-like, but no one seems to care. (I can't eat them due to multiple food intolerances.) The recipes in this book aren...
  2. I think he may want to visit a doctor to rule out any medical issues that may be causing fatigue and lethargy. He may also want to double check with the kitchen staff to make sure there's no CC going on. Another thing may be a food intolerance causing his problems. I have mild fructose malabsorption, and when I eat too much fructose in one day...
  3. Carrageenan can cause intestinal problems for some people. You may want to see if the Walmart and Kemp brands has it. If they don't, you may have found your culprit!
  4. Thank you SOOOOO much to everyone who replied! I'm going to put some in the freezer as soon as I stand up. It's actually my one and only daughter who's 13 today. She's my mother's height now and is a little over an inch away from mine. Every once in awhile I still look at her expecting to see a little girl and am shocked when I see the young woman she...
  5. I'm about to make my eldest some gluten-free cupcakes for her 13th birthday! (Maybe if I say "I have a teenager" enough times, it'll sink in!!!) Only 3 of the 6 of us can/will eat them, so I need to freeze some. This may be a stupid question, but do you freeze cupcakes with or without the frosting? I'm just using some Betty Crocker tub frosting. Wish...
  6. I really liked Leslie Sansone's Walk Away the Pounds series. You can get them on DVD and do it at home at your own pace. I had to stop because the repetitiveness of it irritated the nerves in my legs. BUT I have peripheral neuropathy, so it shouldn't bother most people. Another thing you can try is bellydancing for fitness (or fun!). There are DVD's...
  7. When I researched this what I found was that the regular birth control pill is designed first and foremost to stop ovulation. So if it's doing it's job and preventing your eggs from making their monthly appearance, it isn't an abortifacient. HOWEVER, it also acts to thin the lining of the uterus, which prevents implantation. So if you skip a pill or are...
  8. Sorry you had such a hard time!! Been there, done that with the stomach pain! Inulin can cause problems for some people, so that is a possibility.
  9. We're going to London for 8 days next month where we're renting a flat (so I can cook for myself at the least). Currently, I eat about 16 foods. I've reacted (stomach pain and/or constipation) to most foods I've tried to re-introduce. It's not an issue of cc as my glutened symptoms are neuro and not GI. If all things go well, I have the opportunity to...
  10. Right now, I can't eat two of my 3 favorite things due to food intolerances - tomatoes and dairy. AND I can't eat even gluten-free pizza crusts, most pastas, bread, etc because I don't tolerate rice. (I haven't had a chance to test out teff, etc.) I have a very limited diet. I'm going to assume that for this amount of money I could also dodge my reaction...
  11. 1. I don't know if I react to oats or legumes. OK, I can eat peanuts, but I don't know about beans. I haven't tried oats or beans yet. 2. I was eating Riceland rice. My non-gluten intolerances give me different reactions than my gluten reaction. My gluten reactions are neurological in nature. The non-gluten foods that bother me give me intestinal...
  12. Thanks for everyone's replies! I think I'll try buckwheat first since I have some buckwheat cereal at home. I tried it once, but I had reacted to another food so close to it, I wasn't sure if the buckwheat worked for me or not. This was before I knew to try one food for a few days and wait a week before trying another. I think Teff will be my second new...
  13. My main symptoms of celiac are neurological - jitteriness, tingling in my legs, anxiety, irritability, and brain fog. If I get gluten in my system, I can't remember things, have trouble doing math (which I'm good at), and can't remember words I want to use when talking. So yes, your brain can be effected.
  14. Absolutely have him tested while he's still eating gluten. I wish I had had my kids tested when I first went gluten-free. (I had negative bloodwork, so wasn't sure gluten-free was my answer until after having myself and the house gluten-free for 2 months.) Anyway, at this point, it would be VERY hard for me to have my kids eat gluten for 2-3 months prior...

    ARCHIVED Confused

Here's the abstract from the article that's referenced: Open Original Shared Link I'm not sure how your poster on Facebook drew his conclusions from this article? I think I agree with tictax707.
  16. I tried it once using one of their recipes. For either bread or rolls - don't remember. It just didn't work out. I've had good luck with King Arthur Flour's products. You can buy them online from King Arthur and some local stores carry their gluten-free stuff. BTW, if you're going to bake, I highly recommend using a stand mixer. It makes the...
  17. I have this growing suspicion that I'm now starting to be intolerant of white rice. Sigh
  18. Corn on the cob is a different variety of corn than the corn that's used for corn chips, cornmeal, tortillas, etc. Not sure if the corn used for cornstarch and xanthan gum is also different? Anyway, maybe some people only react to one type of corn...
  19. I ordered some dining cards that I find to be helpful. Triumph Dining makes them as does Cecelia's Marketplace.
  20. Not the most exciting food, but Swanson's premium canned chicken works. It's better if poured over rice or potato or in a taco. Peanut butter on rice crackers, gluten-free bread, or corn tostadas is filling. Have you tried tuna? Canned tuna like the kind from Wild Planet is good. (Honestly, I never liked tuna, but after being on an elimination diet...
  21. You can get them through Amazon, too. I've gotten the regular Let's Do Gluten Free cones (which my kids LOVE) through Amazon before, but it looks like they're unavailable now. I've found them locally at Central Market.
  22. Staples: Gorilla Munch cereal and Amazon Frosted Flakes cereal both by EnviroKidz Tinkyada pasta and original Ragu Mission corn products: soft tortillas, taco shells, tostadas. My kids will put anything on a tostada - hamburger patty, cheese and pepperoni, etc. Pancake mixes like Bob Red Mills or Pamelas Annie's pasta and cheddar (would feed small family...
  23. I agree with you. I know restaurants aren't always careful, but I wonder if people get glutened for reasons that are not the restaurant's fault and not a result of CC on their end. Like someone with celiac touching a chair or doorknob that the last patron touched with gluteny fingers and then picking up their food with their fingers. Even if you wash...
  24. No, it's not that, though I appreciate you posting it! I googled a lot yesterday and couldn't find anything that fit quite right. It seems closer to Beau's lines, but that isn't quite right either. It looked like I had had an injury to my toenail even though I hadn't. Every once in awhile, the part above the crack would come off when I trimmed my nail...
  25. I got a very nice surprise this morning! I took off some month-old toenail polish to discover my problem toenail looks almost normal! For at least the last 7 years (probably longer - don't remember exactly when it showed up), my left big toe's nail hasn't been healthy. It's had a surface crack that runs horizontally across it about 2/3's of the way up...
