  1. I liked "Celiac: The First Year." Can't remember the author and I'm too lazy at the moment to go upstairs and check. A woman, though. I also liked Gluten Free for Dummies (as mentioned above.)
  2. I think that anything that makes such an emotional impact can have long-lasting psychological implications. I'm not a psychologist, but I would assume that those experiences happening as a child would have an even greater chance of causing later concern.
  3. You also have to remember that "feeling bad" is different for everyone. Especially the "when" part. You may not have a reaction from the gluten itself (as in, it hits your stomach and you have an immediate outward reaction.) It may be issues caused by malabsorption, etc. Those issues can be the type to build up over time - the more damage, the more...
  4. I second this! Taco Bell is like cheating on cheating!
  5. Other than going gluten-free, in what other ways did your diet change as compared to before?
  6. If you decide to go gluten-free, OK. However, I wouldn't advise you to stop looking for answers - even while on a gluten-free trial.
  7. You may not get visibly ill. If you have celiac disease the symptoms vary and it doesn't necessarily mean that you're going to be running to the bathroom just from walking into a Panera. Some people have no outward symptoms (damage is still being done, but the symptoms aren't immediately noticeable.) Some people have immediate, vicious symptoms that...
  8. I never had a problem with dry skin until my diagnosis and the amount of hand-washing obscenely increased. I have noticed my knuckles bleeding occasionally, etc. from being cracked. Lotion definitely helps. The winter months, of course, have been worse.
  9. My conditioner has wheat it in and I've used it without problem for the past 8 months. I've never had any skin-type symptoms before, though, and I don't have any other symptoms when using it. However, my conditioner only contains hydrolyzed wheat protein that *isn't* the first ingredient.
  10. That is true. It's also true that just because you feel better when you don't eat gluten doesn't mean you *are* celiac. There are a variety of reason for a lack of correct diagnosis. All are frustrating.
  11. A family history of celiac is definitely something that should be taken into consideration. I think a specialist saying "I don't know" is a good thing. They are admitting they aren't ruling anything out. No, a negative test does not always mean NCGI. It could certainly be a false negative. However, I do feel that people are scared of the NCGI...
  12. I love how you worded this.
  13. For me alcohol affected me differently because of the massive weight loss. It doesn't make me sick, but I can't handle nearly as much.
  14. Yes, they do. There are many gluten-free foods that will likely help.
  15. This is a good point. I've had insurance troubles already regarding medications that needed to be changed and it required proof of diagnosis to get them to not charge me the higher copay.
  16. There is a difference between celiac disease and non-celiac gluten intolerance, so, no, you aren't necessarily celiac just because eating gluten-free "cures" you.
  17. If you said "allergy," then I understand your frustration a lot more.
  18. Yet. (hopefully) If something does come out, I want to be on my doctor's radar as someone who could benefit from it.
  19. I understand these frustrations. While I know that there are many variables involved with finding doctors (including insurance, location, etc.) I think it's important to share which doctors do a good job when it comes to celiac disease and NCGI and then guide people towards those doctors. I don't live in a big city, but both my PCP and my GI had...
  20. To play devil's advocate, I can't really blast the waitress for telling you to pick it out. How was she supposed that cross-contamination is a problem? If you asked about bread and what, perhaps she thought you were just on Atkins diet, etc.. I know it's frustrating when people say stuff like that and are clueless, but most people are clueless unless...
  21. When I first joined these forums (with a positive blood test and a biopsy scheduled) I was told that I didn't have to do the biopsy. Knowing much less than I do now, I seriously considered the option. In retrospect, I am very glad I didn't take the advice given to me. There are pros and cons to having it done (although I do personally feel the pros...
  22. From my understanding, the goal of the vaccine is to make it so the body no longer attacks itself (the lining) when gluten is present. Which studies mention this percentage as an estimate for celiac disease?
  23. I understand your view and appreciate you disagreeing with me respectfully. The thing is I consider AS to be HFA. Simply put, the upper range of the spectrum being AS. I believe those with celiac to be intolerant of gluten. However, I don't believe that all people intolerant of gluten have celiac disease. I suppose my distinction is due to looking...
  24. Dairy isn't necessarily a problem. It is for some people as they heal, but not for others. While I've never had a problem with dairy, the advice I typically see given is to remove one variable at a time (and, later, to add back in things such as a dairy, soy, etc. one at a time.) The healing process for celiac is a slow one. If you've only had problems...
  25. FarScape. Katrala and Clavor (brother / sister) were minor characters, appearing on 1 episode in the middle of the series. I typically dislike SciFi (I've never seen any of the Star Wars,) but I loved this show.
