Freezer packs are pretty good sometimes. At least enough for a sandwich. I take my lunch with me daily to work: -Sandwiches (meat) on Udi's (I either bring condiments with me and add later or put in between other "stuff" so they don't touch the bread.) -Taste of Thai microwave meals (I'm not a curry fan, but I eat these if I'm starving and...

Well, right, but once the villi are healed, I mean. Does the relationship between the two return to non-celiac levels?
-
Why is the absorption sub-par? Sorry for all the questions - this is new info for me.

Are thyroid problems closely related to celiac?
-
This is me completely as well. I'm glad to see there are others like this. My thyroid was checked when I first got sick and they said it was normal. Don't know if I should have it rechecked or not. I had a colonoscopy last December and they made me do the prep where you had to drink the stuff the entire time (no pills.) It was already so cold outside...

ARCHIVED How To Get Back On The Horse?
Katrala replied to zoogirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I wish I had suggestions for you, but all I can do is wish you luck. I guess I don't understand falling off the horse. Maybe it's something everyone goes through? -
ARCHIVED Read Anything Good Lately?
Katrala replied to GFreeMO's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Ones I recommend to people who are looking for a "that was amazing" experience: Shanghai Girls (Lisa See) Dreams of Joy (Lisa See) Middlesex (Jeffrey Eugenides) I Know This Much is True (Wally Lamb) -
Mine as well.

For me, once I get cold I just can't seem to get warm. I lost a lot of weight before being diagnosed and I've always assumed that was why I was colder than normal. I'm also the type who can go outside in the summer (100+ degrees) and not complain one bit.
-
I saw this mentioned in another thread and was curious if anyone else has a symptom of not tolerating cold well. I've always thought of myself as cold-natured. However, when my problems began last August (8ish months until gluten-free at that time,) that entire winter was pure hell for me. I received an electric blanket for Christmas that I carried...

I'll go somewhere and then think, "How did I get here?"

ARCHIVED Kids Selling Gluten!
Katrala replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
No need to tell kids about allergies. Just say no thank you and leave it at that. Fundraiser stuff is typically overpriced because it's the cause you're supporting, not getting a good deal or even good product. If you do have the money to contribute, maybe you can buy one and give it someone else. -
I have a shared kitchen (both my husband and kids eat gluten.) 95% of the time our (shared) dinners are gluten-free. In the event they aren't, we take precautions to make sure there aren't problems. I can say that we've had "roller coaster" problems. Things will be great for awhile and then we'll become slightly more relaxed (for example, not washing...

I have little spouts of anxiety (like realizing this morning that my husband hadn't been washing his hands when scooping spoonfuls of Nutella for my daughter's sandwiches,) but for the most part I think I've come to find this as a "new reality" for myself. I've done different diets in the past to lose weight and such and even while I was on them, I would...

I was in a workshop yesterday and was given this handout. It seemed to fit so well with what many people go through on being diagnosed with any type of lifestyle-changing condition.

ARCHIVED Depressed And Hungry....
Katrala replied to jenbunni87's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Taste of Thai rice noodle things. Udi's bread. Peanut butter. Nutella. Fruits and Veggies (you probably know that already) Tortillas or Lettuce with whatever inside (seriously, whatever, get creative!) Cheese if you have a fridge. Cereal (Chex, Fruity Pebbles, gluten-free Rice Krispies, etc.) -
If it were me, I wouldn't completely erase the possibility of celiac, but I also wouldn't stop looking for an answer, either. You don't have to have celiac in order to have a gluten sensitivity. Gluten may very well be the cause of your problems and a gluten-free diet may help even if it's not celiac. What about any other food allergy testing?
-
Agreed. I've heard several people recently mention that their doctors / nutritionist / etc. said it would be OK to try gluten again after healing. I don't understand why in the world this advice would be given.
-
While I do agree with this statement, you (OP) need to be aware that since a biopsy is still the "gold standard" for diagnosis for many physicians, one that is not "real" or not having one at all can potentially lead to problems down the road with insurance and any other situation that may arise where you need to "prove" you have celiac disease. I've been...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Shampoo
Katrala replied to BobbyKat LittleCub's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
(I'm speaking purely for celiac here - not for anyone who has any other types of issues with gluten) For celiac the damage comes when gluten enters the small intestine. You picking up a handful of wheat gluten isn't going to hurt you unless you ingest it. I doubt a shampoo makes your hair directly fall out. I'd say it's either a different... -
ARCHIVED I'm So Bitter And Sick Of It
Katrala replied to zus888's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You can't change having celiac. You can change how you react to the limitations caused by the disease. Appreciate the food that you eat for what it is - not for what it's trying to mimic. Emotional distress can cause many symptoms as well. Perhaps some of what you're feeling is related to how upset / angry you still are over the diagnosis. (I... -
Never expect anyone (even family) to take your dietary needs into consideration. Then, if they do, it's a surprise and, while it still probably won't work out, the gesture was nice. My husband's brother is getting married 12 hours away this December and I have no idea what will be available. My plan is to bring a jar of Barney Butter and a loaf or...

ARCHIVED Why Does My Bread Have A Bump On Top?
Katrala replied to Katrala's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
This time it was just under the top of the pan when I put it in the oven. This recipe has a double-rise time, which confused me a little, since I thought the double-rise was typically for gluten bread? -
I know this post is old, but it made me think about some supplies in the classroom I haven't thought about. I've had the fogginess a little since returning to school last month and I thought it was because I hadn't cleaned out my school fridge and there were some crumbs in there. While that is still the most likely scenario, I'm thinking of ways...
