  1. Maybe invite her over for a delicious gluten-free meal? Maybe once she sees that gluten-free can be just as tasty as gluten foods she'll give it a whirl. If you could just get her to go gluten-free for a week or two I bet she'd start feeling so much better she'd be GLAD to go gluten-free.
  2. Hey, I can't cook either, but except for the potatoes (can't do nightshades), that is pretty much the way I eat every day. And it tastes pretty good.

    ARCHIVED Hi

Hi Rose. I'm glad you found us! Do you have celiac or gluten intolerance? How long? Tell us a bit more about yourself, then dig in and read. This is the coolest site on the web, filled with some of the smartest, most supportive people you will find anywhere. Glad you could join us, and I hope you stick around.
  4. Doctors are notorious for misdiagnosing. If going gluten-free has given you relief, it would seem you are at least gluten intolerant. All of your symptoms certainly match. What does the rash on your hands look like? Does it itch or does it hurt? I ask because although I don't have DH, which IS a celiac diagnosis, I do have palmoplantar pustular psoriasis...
  5. Oops. Karen beat me to it.
  6. In a restaurant, unless they have a dedicated fryer for the french fries, they cook them in the same grease they cooked the breaded fish and chicken in. That means anything cooked in that grease is cross contaminated.
  7. I learned here that almost all bacon is gluten-free. I haven't bothered checking myself because I can't eat it anyway.
  8. If it were just an intolerance it probably wouldn't be a problem, but the OP said she also has a wheat allergy.
  9. Loco, do you wear a mask? Actually, you might be better off with a respirator - the kind painters use. They seal tight to the face and I believe they have a cartridge that filters out even the finest particles. You can probably find one at the hardware store. They aren't THAT expensive, and it would be well worth it. Good luck.
  10. The one that gets me is "plate sharing". Some restaurants actually have it written right in their menus that "Plate sharing is not allowed". If I buy their food, it now belongs to ME, and if I want to share, I WILL! And there are other places that will be glad to bring you an extra plate - but they charge you for it. They claim it is to pay the diswasher...
  11. Attitude is everything, and it looks like you have a great one! Newbies, listen to this. Remember it when you are having a down moment. You CAN eat LOTS of good foods, and the longer you do, they better you will feel, not just physically, but emotionally. Your relationship with food will change for the better. I swear, there are times when I am actually...
  12. The ones that get to me are things like, "Oh yes, I've gone gluten-free too!", as they stuff a breaded and deep fried mushroom or something similar in their mouths.
  13. Or anything else you didn't grow yourself. And if you think we have been LYING to you, another piece of advice I can give you is, get your info from someplace or someone else.
  14. I have been wondering about plastic cutlery, if they have gone over to the corn-based plastic too. And it looks like some companies have. Maybe you got corned from the plastic spoon? The only other thing I can think of is, if the wind was blowing, maybe some "dust" from the wheat got into your mouth while you were talking? I'm sorry you're sick. You...
  15. I'm not sure if you will get much info from the tobacco companies. They are famous for not wanting to tell people (even the government) what kind of additives they put in cigarettes. I'm not sure about chew though. Maybe because it goes in the mouth where there is a chance of actually ingesting some, the rules would be different. I understand why svs...
  16. There are a lot of things you can eat instead. You can bring your own gluten-free goodies to parties. But the important thing to remember is that after you have been eating healthy foods for a while, the temptation to indulge in gluten will fade away. I have gotten to the point where even the smell of unhealthy foods like deep fried chicken or even pizza...
  17. "However, our formulations are occasionally subject to change and we encourage you to read all labels before using any food product." There it is - the standard CYA statement.
  18. Those are HILARIOUS!!! I'm sitting here all alone and laughing like a fool. Thank you!!!
  19. This is what Skylark said. CYA (cover your ...butt) legalese. Same thing the rest of us have been saying. NO company can realistically GUARANTEE that something is gluten-free, any more than you can walk into a grocery store and be GUARANTEED that even the produce you buy hasn't been CC'd. (Could have been grown with wheat straw mulch, could have been stored...
  20. The only information I have seen posted when someone has a question about Kraft products is what has already been posted in this thread - that Kraft will list in parentheses, if an igredient is from a gluten source. I have also seen the CYA statement made. Neither of these is misinformation. This site has more and better information about celiac than...
  21. But my point is, cellulose CAN be from corn. It isn't always, but if you have a corn intolerance or allergy it's wise to avoid cellulose. They don't have to name the source on the label and the only way to know for sure is to contact the manufacturer. And half the time they can't tell you because they get their cellulose from many different sources depending...
  22. I was in the same boat. The nutritionist I saw said I was probably reacting to pesticides on the vegetables I couldn't tolerate so I tried organic. That worked for some things like sweet potatoes and pears. But it didn't work for regular potatoes, so I believe I have a problem with nightshades. It didn't work for apples either. I have no idea why. But...
  23. So, one way to look at this would be to poll the members here. Has anyone without OTHER intolerances ever been sickened by any Kraft, Con-Agra, or General Mills product that lists no gluten ingredients, but does not bear the gluten-free label?
  24. It is extremely difficult! If the only thing that bothered me were gluten I would be able to eat most gluten-free breads and other goodies. As it is, I have to eat only whole foods. (Well, except for the Hagen Daz vanilla. ) But then again, I wouldn't be back to BELOW my high school weight, so I guess I'll take the good with the bad. Here's a link...
  25. And the cellulose is often derived from corn. (It's better than wood chips!) The corn allergy forums said to avoid these so I assumed it was corn starch, but either way it has a high potential to have corn. And they DO reccommend using corn starch at home.
