  1. Well change them back!! Actually, during the (last) drought years I remember a day in 2007 when it got up to 116! That was the year when my precious little town almost burned to the ground.
  2. There is even a shortage of HAY here in South Dakota. A lot of ranchers are selling their herds because there is nothing to feed them. Speaking of cattle, have you ever noticed how the young calves run and bounce around with their tails straight out, and they seem so happy? That's because they are born in the spring when the weather is nice. Then comes...
  3. I know a lot of people say this, but in my case it's true - my Mom was the very best Mom that ever lived! Thanks.
  4. You will be up and down at first. That is normal. But be aware that there is hidden gluten everywhere, like toothpaste, cosmetics, and especially in your older cookware. Scratched teflon pans or plastics, colanders, cast iron, wooden utensils. And if you live in a home where there are still gluten eaters it can be really tricky. You may have picked up...
  5. There is no false positive. If they say you've got it, you've got it. It may be that you haven't had it long enough for deficiencies to show up yet. But after you've been gluten-free for a while I'd be willing to bet you discover that you DID have symptoms that you thought were just "normal". Insomnia, foggy head, thinning hair, less energy than you used...
  6. Razzle, could it be the corn you are reacting to? When you spoke about the thinner plastics being worse I thought of corn right away. In an effort to rid plastics of BPA they have found a replacement that is made with corn. Those clear plastic water bottles are the worst offenders. I react badly to them. I can still drink out of the cloudy plastic that they...
  7. When I was a kid (and as an adult) I never really liked cake. Mom would make me a pie instead (usually a nice tart rhubarb), and decorate the crust. That merange piecrust that has been mentioned here is really good and you could fill it with whatever is his favorite. Later on, as a teenager when my sweet tooth COMPLETELY disappeared, I would tell Mom...
  8. It is my fantasy that not only will the drought hurt the corn crop, but that a blight will occur that wipes corn off of the face of the earth. Of course I wish for farmers that they find a lucrative replacement crop so they don't go broke, but that whatever that replacement crop is, it be something that no one is allergic or intolerant to.
  9. I don't recall ever having a problem with corn before. Used to grow it (organically) in the back yard when I was a kid and we ate a lot of it. For me, it all started with the psoriasis. I honestly can't remember if, during the ten or so years I had psoriasis before going gluten-free,corn made it flair worse. All I know is that it nails me to the floor now...
  10. Here in South Dakota I have to have a prescription. I think it varies by state. I got my prescription at the free clinic. I didn't want to pay for an office visit on top of the cost of the meds.
  11. It's the corn. I have Tylenol made at a compounding pharmacy. No corn, no gluten, no soy. I can take it with no problems, and although it's expensive it's worth it.
  12. I have mentioned many times here that I emailed Uncle Ben's and they responded with a phone call. They assured me that there is no corn whatsoever used in the processing of their rice. Another corn intolerant member here did the same thing and got the same response. I know it's true because I am super-sensitive to corn and I eat Uncle Ben's instant white...
  13. Today's high, a predicted 96 degrees. Low, 64. And we are under threat of dry lightning. With all of the dead trees and the lack of rain, it could be a scary day.
  14. It is almost impossible to keep corn as far away from me as I'd like. It is in everything! I guess I'm what you would call "supersensitive" when it comes to corn. I even react to the new corn based plastics! I have to use real silverware, real plates, and cloth towels. I don't worry about deodorant because there is no realistic chance of getting it in my...
  15. Welcome! You don't need to have celiac to post here. We're glad you found us! I have a severe corn intolerance and I can tell you that the corn in pills of any kind - supplements or medicines is a BIG problem!! I had to have Tylenol made at a compounding pharmacy. When I was feeling dragged out a few months ago I took a TINY sub-lingual B12 tablet and...
  16. Your doctor is right that not all Celiacs have digestive symptoms. There are some folks on this board who were shocked that they have it. I myself never had much in the way of digestive symptoms. Mine is skin related, along with brain fog and insomnia. I also have unexplained, undiagnosed jaw pain and swelling that only comes on when I have been glutened...
  17. Gail, do you have problems with corn? The "citrus" wash they use on bagged salads is made with corn.
  18. He's ADORABLE!! My friend Wendy has a boy his age and they look so much alike they could be twins. I guess all four year olds with blond hair look sort of alike. You know, it's funny, when I was young enough to have had kids I wanted no part of them. Couldn't stand to be around one! Now that I am past the "danger" of having one of my own, I LOVE kids...
  19. I had a good friend years ago who had such terrible D and other celiac symptoms. I didn't have it back then but Mom did, and I KNEW that was her answer. Her doctor didn't have a clue, and just kept telling her it was IBS. I BEGGED her to try a gluten-free diet for a while, but she said she REFUSED to have celiac because she just loved eating out. (She...
  20. I'm so glad! I haven't contributed to this thread because I haven't had any answers, but I can tell you that this poor little boy has been on my mind so much that I actually dreamed about him last night. No matter how much WE suffer when we are sick, the thought of a sweet little child suffering is too much to bear. Give him a hug from me and give yourself...
  21. Well if your sister is gluten sensitive, odds are it comes from your side of the family. But that doesn't mean her father's side couldn't also have problems. If I were you, I would have the other kids tested and yourself too. AND your husband. Not all celiacs have noticable symptoms, but they are still doing damage every time they eat gluten. If you...
  22. Oh yeah, eggs have iodine don't they? Can you do sour cream? Believe it or not, sour cream is really good on pancakes. Your hubby could then pour on the powdered sugar.
  23. Some paper products do indeed have corn in them. I have given up on paper products except for TP. I use cloth towels and ceramic plates. I DO have paper towels for my customers use over the sink here at the shop and on occasion I will forget and use one, but I ALWAYS buy Bounty anyway and haven't had any trouble. Add that to what the previous poster said...
  24. When I was a little kid I would always ask if I could have my last pancake with just butter. Finally one day Mom looked at me and said, "You don't like maple syrup, do you?" I almost cried as I relpied, "No." I was raised that you eat what's put in front of you, so I thought I HAD to use the syrup. When Mom told me I didn't have to eat it anymore I was...
  25. Having to deal with rude people is hard any day, but when you're not feeling good it can be almost impossible to keep your cool. When I used to have to put up with people like that I took solace in the fact that I'M NOT THEM. I would think of how unhappy they must be in their lives if they have to take it out on the poor waitress. And I would remember that...
