ARCHIVED My Dog Vs. The Gluten Free Pretzel...
bartfull replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Have you tried explaining to your dog that going gluten-free will clear up her symptoms? Does your dog drool, chew your slippers, bark at the neighbor's cat? Could be a sign of doggy celiac. -
Dani, I'm so sorry your Mom has "turned on you". Have you given her any links to info on Celiac? Books? I suppose you know her best, so if there's no point trying to get her to understand, you're just going to have to let it go. Right now you need to concentrate on your health, and let the naysayers go their own way. But you might ask her why she doesn...

ARCHIVED Transition Symptoms
bartfull replied to Dedic's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It's called gluten withdrawal, and it happens to most of us. Give it a few weeks and your body will adjust. I think another possibility is that you ARE reacting to the gluten in the vitamins. Once you've gone gluten-free, you will often react much more strongly to gluten than you used to. As to inducing vomiting, I have no idea, but it would SEEM... -
ARCHIVED Mrs. Leepers
bartfull replied to Kelleybean's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I make my "cheeseburger mac" with rice. Cook the rice, crumble your hamburger into it, cube up a bunch of monterray jack, and pop it in the microwave. Stir it up while it's hot with maybe a little butter thrown in and the cheese coats the rice. It's yummy! -
ARCHIVED What Do You Think Would Help Me In The Morning, Kind Of Gross?
bartfull replied to mommyto2kids's topic in Super Sensitive People
I was a three times a morning person. Not exactly D, but loose, and by the third time, looser. And the third time was always after eating breakfast. It changed pretty quickly, within a couple of weeks I think, after I went gluten-free. But whenever I would eat salads or asparagus or sweet potatoes, there it was, back again. Maybe you're having trouble... -
ARCHIVED Stomach Only Seems To Bother Me After Num 2
bartfull replied to Newtoitall's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My celiac Mom had the exact same complaint. No chance of CC because her household had been entirely gluten-free for years, and she NEVER ate anything she didn't prepare herself. Unfortunately we never did find out what caused it. She refused to see a doctor until I forced her to, and I won't go into that long sad story again. -
ARCHIVED Brand Spanking New & In Pain.
bartfull replied to kristenloeh's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have no insurance and no official dx, but I did an elimination diet and that's how I found out I am intoleratnt to corn and soy. The hardest part is getting to where you're feeling pretty good, then adding a food that turns out to be bad for you. It's like Russian roulette - "Today I'll try _____" and wondering if there IS a bullet in that chamber. Then... -
Ellystar, I just wrote to you in the other thread you have posted on, but I forgot to say, "WELCOME!!" I'm sorry you had to join our "club", but it's good to know I have a neighbor I can actually meet up with sometime. I LOVE Spearfish! Not just the beautiful canyon, but the town is great too. You guys have some great restaurants. I used to really enjoy Roma...

ARCHIVED Afraid To Say It Out Loud
bartfull replied to bartfull's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm too old to try skydiving now, but if I were younger... But happy? Oh yeah. Between feeling lousy and the emotions involved with taking care of and then losing my friend, I haven't played much music in the past seven months. But last Thursday I wrote a new song and suddenly I feel REALLY alive again! It feels so good to feel good!! My wish is... -
ARCHIVED Afraid To Say It Out Loud
bartfull replied to bartfull's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Maybe one of these days we can get together. There is a really good Indian restaurant in Rapid that is gluten-free and most of their stuff is corn free too. I could meet you there and we can talk about our diets, and our beautiful Hills, and hey - we can even gossip about some of the folks on this forum! (Just joking ) Yeah, it was heartbreaking... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free fad raises concerns - Ag Journal
bartfull replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
I heard a story on NPR about a book someone wrote. I can't remember the author's name, but the book was called something like, "Eat Food, Not Too Much, Mostly Plants". In the story he claimed that most Americans eat "food-like substances". That pretty much sums it up. -
I suffered from insomnia all my life. But after a few months gluten-free, I started sleeping like a baby. I close my eyes and am asleep within minutes, and I wake up exactly 7 1/4 hours later, feeling wide awake and ready to take on the world. Sometimes I think THAT is the very best part of going gluten-free. (Well, that and the rash going away and the lack...

ARCHIVED Accidental Glutening!
bartfull replied to christianmom247's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's a hard habit to get into, but we need to read the label EVERY TIME we shop. I am guilty of not doing so at times too. Wouldn't it be great if someone would open a chain of totally gluten-free grocery stores? -
ARCHIVED Afraid To Say It Out Loud
bartfull replied to bartfull's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
YES!!! PLEASE come! I'll even close the shop for at least a day so I can be your sight-seeing guide. gluten-free restaurants in Hot Springs? Not a chance! But acutally, I HAVE eaten at Wolly's and gotten away with it. But Rapid City has lots of gluten-free places. To get here, you would fly into Rapid City Regional airport. It's probably more expensive... -
Welcome! It is amazing how many similar horror stories I have heard. They give you a diagnosis and then don't tell you what it means! I don't have much faith at all in today's medical profession. I'm glad you finally figured it out though. There is a wealth of good, solid information here to help you as you struggle to learn what you can and can't eat...

I have been gluten-free for a year now. As a matter of fact, today is my anniversary as a member of this forum. (No gifts please. ) I swear I cried more in the past year than I ever had in my life, and several times it was in public places like the grocery store, the healthfood store, and once at a restaurant. I am probably the world's worst and LAZIEST...

Corn gives me the exact same symptoms as gluten. I have read that "corn gluten" CAN cause the same intestinal damage, but whether it can or not, I will never touch corn again. BUT - if your throat swells up when you have caramel color, that is not an intolerance symptom, but a true allergy symptom. You MUST avoid corn, please, because the next time you...

Here's another one that I don't think has ever been used here, but perhaps should: SID=stupid incompetent doctor.

It always ticks me off when I hear that people get hurt feelings because we want to bring our own food. Why should they be hurt? If you bring your inhaler for asthma with you, would they be hurt? Of course not! Well our gluten-free food IS our medicine, so those who feel insulted because we won't eat their food should get a clue. I think the reason this...

ARCHIVED Change In Smell
bartfull replied to cdobbs's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have never tried enzymes, but a lot of folks here say they help. As long as it's gluten-free, give it a try. -
I remember several times having a meltdown in the grocery store. But after a while I got to the point where I knew which things I could buy without worrying, and now I go in without even a list. I WILL remind you and myself and everyone else, that it's a good idea to read the ingredients EACH TIME, because companies change ingredients frequently and you never...

ARCHIVED Ice Cream
bartfull replied to JordanW's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yes! Hagen Daz IS dense. It is very filling compared to other brands. And I love the flavor. But I alternate between that and the Blue Bunny All Natural vanilla because the texture is truly velvety. It isn't as strong a vanilla flavor, but I just can't stop eating it. So usually I have both in the freezer and I do the Hagen Daz for breakfast, and the... -
ARCHIVED Change In Smell
bartfull replied to cdobbs's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Welcome Fred! I have some friends who are vegetarians, and they say they can smell a meat-eater a mile away. Maybe the smell DOES come from eating more meat. I know I eat a lot more meat than I used to. Haven't noticed a smell though. -

Gemini, I would LOVE to have a get-together here! And as cool as Mount Rushmore is, it is probably the LEAST ompressive thing in the Hills. That's saying a lot because Rushmore is pretty spectacular. Here is a video one of my customers made last year. It will show you a little bit of my beautiful town: -
ARCHIVED Question For Those Who Are Grain Free
bartfull replied to GFreeMO's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Even eating rice (my only grain), I have been losing weight like crazy. Now that I'm where I want to be, I have started eating more ice cream (!) to try to stop the weight loss. I know you can't do that because you are off sugar. I think the only way to stop losing for you would be to eat more meat. I have done that too, and between ice cream for breakfast...
