  1. I'm no doctor but I would think the patch would be safe as long as you scrub your hands after touching it. Lotions are a different story though. If you use it, even on body parts that are not your hands, you may get it on your hands just by touching or scratching these body parts, then forget to wash your hands before popping something in your mouth. Lipstick...
  2. The only thing that would make me question store brands is the chance of CC when the meats are cut up and packaged. Some stores sell pre-stuffed clams or pork chops, or seasoned meats like pork tenderloins. If they were seasoned with something containing gluten, cut up and packaged at the store, then they cut up and packaged the chicken with the same meat...
  3. Sals are cumulative. You might be able to eat a sweet potato if you don't eat any other high sals foods for? a few days? a week? That's another problem - trying to figure out what your load limit is. I can eat a sweet potaot (SMALL) every day if I don't eat anything else with sals. It took me a while to figure that out though. When I got pistachios back ...
  4. Yeah, sweet potatoes. I could not eat them at first but my nutritionist told me to try organic and those stayed with me. Even though I peeled them I think the chemical fertilizers and pesticides went all the way through. And now this is a funny story: I had been eating organic sweet potatoes successfully when one week I started having trouble with constipation...
  5. Bubba's Mom and Cia, do either of you have trouble with berries? I ask because berries are really high in salicylates and potatoes can be too. The only potatoes that are not are the OLD ones with brown skins. AND you should peel them thickly because sals are toward the outside. (That's why berries are so high - can you imagine peeling a blueberry?) If...
  6. I'm so sorry your husband isn't more supportive! He should do some reading right here so he will understand that a lot of us go through this. It really stinks when you start losing more and more foods. I lost soy and corn and potatoes and salicylates. I have gotten corn starch and potato starch back after 14 months, but I have been hit by SOMETHING recently...
  7. I no longer eat the junk food full of chemicals that would have killed me in the long run whether I had celiac or not. And I feel closer to my Mom even though she passed away several years ago. She had celiac, and now that I understand how badly she suffered I wish I could tell her. But she knows...
  8. Flavoring and "natural flavor" are USUALLY carried on corn.
  9. I would never use something like, "Get out of my way you pesky tripping hazzard who will be the death of us both when you trip me and break my neck so that I fall on you and squash you flat!" It's all true, but too long to use as a password.
  10. I respectfully disagree, Flowerqueen. I believe it is just a myth that people will develop an intolerance to foods if they don't eat them for a long time. For example, when I was a kid, my Mom made me eat my vegetables. Once I was out of the house, I never ate broccoli again until I was in my 40's. Now I like broccoli although I hated it as a kid. But when...
  11. Thanks. Karen IS great (although that is not the password I chose.)
  12. Sorry you are both having problems with family members. From what I have read here, that happens a lot. They need to be educated. If you can get them to read some of the info here it would help, but if not, just compare it to peanut allergies. Everyone knows by now that the tiniest exposure to peanuts can kill a person with a peanut allergy. Or compare...
  13. So one day I was having trouble logging in. I gave up and was given a new password with about a thousand digits. Now my computer keeps knocking me off line and I have to log in several times a day. It would be so much easier if I had a password I could remember. I had thought about just registering again with an ever so slightly different name but I didn...
  14. Rice CAKES! Now there's a thought. I have a package of really stale rice cakes in the cupboard. I have been using them on top of pork chops and boneless chicken when I cook them in the oven. Helps keep the meat moist and then I just throw them away. I DETEST rice cakes! For a while they were the only thing remotely like bread that I could put butter on and...
  15. I have only tried hot dogs once since going gluten-free. These were organic bison hot dogs. They were gluten-free and I got REALLY sick from them. They tasted SO good I ate two. About an hour or so later I had to close the shop and go home where I proceeded to vomit for the rest of the evening. It was the spices. I had been eating bland foods and wasn...
  16. I'm going to ask them today. They carry the long cooking Uncle Ben's, but it's so much easier to just microwave the instant. Not only that, but I like the taste of the instant better. If they can't do it, I can always get it at the OTHER grocery store. I never shop at that one because their prices are a lot higher and their meats and produce are even worse...
  17. Did anyone else notice this: "I don't feel as fatigued and when I get up I start cleaning the house as I have the energy to do that before work" ? Rob, do you have a brother? And can he cook? I NEED someone like that!
  18. Hmm...I AM going to be the old lady of honor at a wedding next month. (Can't call me MAID of honor because I'm no longer a maiden. Can't call me MATRON of honor because I am no longer married. But I AM and old lady! ) Because I am a lazy and lousy cook, I cook up a bunch of rice at once. So the rice I have left is already cooked. I'd bet Maria will...
  19. I haven't added anything else except some vitamins. The whole time I was reacting to corn I couldn't find any gluten-free, soy-free, corn-free vitamins. NOW my healthfood store has some. I started taking them at the same time I started eating the Udi's. I doubt my reaction would take three weeks to show up, although maybe it IS cumulative. But I'm thinking...
  20. Newbie 101 should be required reading for every new member. Like, maybe before anyone is allowed to register, instead of terms of service they should have to read Newbie 101 and then be given a test to prove they read it. I just wish I could get my FRIENDS who deny they have celiac symptoms to read it. Maybe I'll print it out and give it to everyone...
  21. You mean is your BBQ grill contaminated? Probably. If you ever toated buns on it, used BBQ sauce, seasonings, or even margerine on whatever you cooked on it in the past. Most people either buy a new grate for their grills or use foil so their food doesn't touch the grate.
  22. RoseTapper, my heart and prayers go out to you. When my dear friend Kelly went through this, I kept looking for my magic wand that I seem to have misplaced. I wish I could find it so I could help you. Please know that not only are your family and friends with you, but your online friends as well. ((((((HUGS))))))
  23. For the past week I have been having D. My digestive symptoms used to be mild, but this has not been so mild. The only things I have eaten that were different from my usual fare were Udi's, which I have been eating every day for over three weeks now, and a different brand of instant rice (SureFine) that I started using last week. I used to use Uncle...
  24. And THAT'S the reason I wish I could have been tested. When people ask whether they should get tested or just go gluten-free, I am torn. Knowing what a bad track record doctors in general have when it comes to testing and diagnosing, I think, "Why pay some clueless doctor who won't know enough to do it right anyway?" But I also will always wonder if I am...
  25. Actually it is corn starch that paper products of all types are sometimes dusted with. And now they are even MAKING certain "biodegradable" paper plates and plastic utensils out of corn. If you don't have a problem with corn, it's kind of neat that they are doing this. Good for the environment. But if you DO have a problem with corn, this whole world can...
