Well, baking soda and vinnegar, huh? I am the world's worst cook, but I think I'd like to try that sometime when I'm feeling brave. Thanks! (And could you pass along that applesauce cake recipe?)

Ciamarie, you can make your own baking powder by mixing baking soda with cream of tartar. Some folks do a one to one ratio, others go with twice the amount of cream of tartar. I only used it once so far and did the one to one ratio. It worked.

ARCHIVED Am I Reacting To Rice?
bartfull replied to dinosinclair's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Did you switch to a different brand of rice? I ask because I was recently glutened by some store brand rice that it turns out, was made in a facility that processes wheat. I used to use Uncle Ben's and never had a problem, but the store was out and I bought this other stuff instead. There was no warning on the label, but after I got sick I went to their website... -
ARCHIVED 12 Weeks Gluten Free
bartfull replied to Ranne10's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I lost all but eleven foods during the first year. Now that I have healed, I am successfully adding things back. It was a mighty rough year and there were times when I thought I'd NEVER get better, but it happened. One of the things that helped was going almost totally organic. I was even reacting to pesticides and fertilizers. I think I still react to high... -
ARCHIVED Ceramics/plaster
bartfull replied to 123glldd's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Mom used to do ceramics and even had her own kiln. That white ceramic with no gloss that you can paint on (they use what they call stains) actually IS fired. They fire it without paint so you can use the stains on it. Plaster isn't as hard as the ceramic material. If you can scrape some off with the back of your fingernail it is plaster. If not, it is ceramic... -
ARCHIVED Help! Celiac And Appendicitis
bartfull replied to SilverSlipper's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I can't answer your questions, but I am OUTRAGED that a hospital, and place of "healing", refuses to take care of your daughter's dietary needs! Is there a healthfood store or a large grocery with a gluten-free section? Even if you can't cook for her, maybe you can find something safe for her to eat. And then speak to the hospital administrator. Go all the... -
If you had it before going gluten-free then it might well be psoriasis. OR DH. It will take a while to get rid of it, but I'm sure that if you are scrupulous with your diet you will see results. I hate to even bring this up, but you may have trouble with corn or salicylates like I did. I used to go on a psoriasis forum and when I mentioned gluten-free, they...

I LOVE rice vinnegar! It comes in different strengths, from 4.5% acidity all the way down to 2%. The 2% is so good and so mild you could literally drink it, and it tastes so good you might want to. And I can buy it at one of the grocery stores here which is a good thing because the closest Asian market is 60 miles away. Even before celiac I used to use it...

OK, here is what my hands and feet USED TO look like. It sure made life miserable. As bad as it was, going gluten-free (and corn-free, soy-free, nightshade-free and salicylate light) made it go away. And now that my gut has heeled I have been able to get corn starch and nightshades back. With a little time I'm hoping to get more of them back. Open Original...

I don't have DH, but from what I uderstand it can look different for different people. Does it itch intensely? Also, DH is symetrical. In other words, you will get it in the same place on both sides of your body. I have palmoplantar putular psoriasis. It looks a lot like whitehead pimples and I only get it on my hands and feet. It doesn't itch very much...

ARCHIVED Shell Fish?
bartfull replied to bossley's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Exactly Bossley! I apologize for not expressing myself clearly. It's just that I can see and empathize with your suffering and because I found my answers here, I know that you could find answers to questions you don't even have yet. This site is like the encyclopedia of celiac. All of the answers are right here. We just need to go looking to find them. ... -
The only places I wouldn't order a coffee are a bakery or pizza shop. Too much gluten in the air that might find its way into my cup.

ARCHIVED Issues With Chicken And Turkey
bartfull replied to Pamela B.'s topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I'm glad you pointed out that this is an old thread. I was going to respond to the person who said lemons and limes are the most alkaline foods on earth. ALKALINE?? WRONG!! Also, it is a myth that there is more L Tryptophan in turkey and that is why we get sleepy after a Thanksgiving dinner. ALL meats have L Tryptophan, and some have more than turkey... -
ARCHIVED Celiac: The Trendy Disease For Rich White People - Science 2.0
bartfull replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
Lately I say things like, "When I was diagnosed with celiac disease...", even though I never got tested by a doctor. I am SELF diagnosed, but if I say that no one takes me seriously. The way I say it, I'm not lying exactly, just heading off the misconceptions. -
ARCHIVED Shell Fish?
bartfull replied to bossley's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Bossley, DH is a skin rash that some celiacs get. It is extremely itchy and if you had it you would know it! Now, I'm going to talk to you like a Dutch Uncle (Aunt?) When I first came to this site I read just about every thread so I could educate myself. While we love to answer questions and help people, I think you could help yourself a lot by spending... -
Corn is the filler that most pills have. Karen is right - if I didn't have trouble with corn I wouldn't have my medications made at a compounding pharmacy. I'm lucky - there are two pharmacies in my town. One has the type of pharmacists that you speak of. Totally uncooperative. But the other one has caring people who get to know their customers. When I needed...

ARCHIVED Follow Up Tests
bartfull replied to come dance with me's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm sorry but I don't understand what is so traumatic about blood tests. They just draw a vial of blood, right? Or is it somehow different? The last blood test I had was a CBC and I got a good phlebotomist. I didn't even feel any pressure, let alone a sting. I would think after reading EatMeat4Good's post you would want to have her checked to make sure. ... -

Sweet potatoes. You can have them with your meat and a small serving of vegetables, or you can bake them, peel them (the skin comes right off if they're baked first), then mash them with a little bit of cinnamon and sugar. Tastes just like pumpkin pie filling and makes a great dessert. And the best part is they are FULL of nutrition.

ARCHIVED Follow Up Tests
bartfull replied to come dance with me's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I think the blood test the pediatrician suggested might be to check for antibodies to see if the diet is working. Some folks feel better but still have high antibodies and are still damaging their gut. And really, how traumatic is a simple blood test? Would your GP refuse to give her vaccinations because THEY are traumatic? I'd take her to the pediatricain... -
ARCHIVED Dinner Party Etiquette?
bartfull replied to AnnieInItaly's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have found that honesty is the best policy. I tell people about my dietary restrictions and then bring my own food, on a plate with utensils on the side. If it is something that can be eaten cold, all the better. If not, I borrow their microwave and heat it. Then I can eat with everyone else so I don't stick out like a sore thumb, I get to enjoy their company... -
ARCHIVED 99.9% Certain, Though Undiagnosed
bartfull replied to eternal's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I am self-diagnosed. My Mom had diagnosed celiac and diagnosed psoriasis that went away after she went gluten-free. Knowing that both of these maladies run in families, I went gluten-free and MY psoriasis went away, plus other symptoms (like insomnia, brain fog, swelling ankles, heart palpitations, not to mention the minor digestive symptoms) went away too... -
ARCHIVED Celiac And Lymphoma
bartfull replied to runnergurl2012's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My poor Mom had dementia toward the end. I believe it was because she stopped getting her vitamin B12 shots. Maybe you could talk to your Dad's doctor about B12? If he is deficient (and many celiacs are), it MIGHT help if he started getting shots. If that works and his mind clears up he might decide to go gluten-free? And if this gets your hopes up and...
