Isn't that the best?! I keep joking with my husband that I finally "got my smarts back".

ARCHIVED Pity Party/ College Search
melikamaui replied to ryebaby0's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm sorry. This all really sucks. Reading your post was a big eye-opener for me. Both of my kids have celiac disease, and my oldest is 10. Hopefully in the next 7 to 8 years things will be better for us, but I'm not optimistic. I feel for you. I hope you can find something that really works for your son. -
ARCHIVED Is It Anything To Do With The Ear?
melikamaui replied to UnhappyCoeliac's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I have ear problems too. I have no idea if they are celiac related or not, but my ears are a constant source of discomfort for me. I have terrible balance issues too. My husband was just urging me today to see a doctor about the fact that I've had muffled hearing in my left ear since April. I go through this a lot, always have, so I'm just used to it... -
ARCHIVED Glutened Over And Over Again...
melikamaui replied to ElseB's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm in the same boat. My hubbie and I went out for our anniversary over the weekend and I got contaminated. We both double checked that the food I ordered was gluten-free, but something inside was telling me not to trust it. I didn't listen and ate it. I could tell before I even left the table that I was in trouble. This is my first major contamination... -
ARCHIVED Why Is Barley Malt Added To So Many Breakfast Cereals?
melikamaui replied to kellynolan82's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I wonder this too. I miss Rice Krispies with a passion! If not for the stupid barley malt I'd eat it all the time. -

You're absolutely doing the right thing. You could save your children years of pain and suffering by testing them now. -
ARCHIVED What If A Gluten Free Diet Is Not Strictly Followed?
melikamaui replied to Jen39's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm with all the others. He really does have to stay gluten-free. And since he has relatives in Italy, maybe they could send him some of the AMAZING gluten-free food they have there? We just got back from a trip to Italy and it was gluten-free heaven. Every place we ate was better than the next! It was awesome. What was depressing was coming back to... -
ARCHIVED Nursemaid's Elbow
melikamaui replied to salexander421's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm interested in your replies too. My youngest son seems to pop his elbow in and out a few times a year. My chiropractor actually showed me how to pop it back in because he gets nursemaid's elbow so often. -
ARCHIVED On The Subject Of Memory Problems
melikamaui replied to Newtoitall's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I was another list maker. My husband has teased me about it for 20 years. Now I find I don't need them anymore. However, I will say that dairy and sugar also act like gluten for me. I get foggy and forgetful when I have any of my "toxic three" as I like to call them. Does anyone know where the memory portion of the brain is? -
ARCHIVED Can You Eat Gluten-Free Oats?
melikamaui replied to Skylark's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I voted no, but we have 3 celiacs in my family. Two of us seem to have no reactions, but my youngest son reacts very strongly. Because of my son we all stay off oats. -
ARCHIVED Is Anyone Else Just Angry That Drs Missed Celiac For So Many Years?
melikamaui replied to HaileyRay812's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Our pediatric gastroenterologist basically said the same thing to me. That it was "impossible" to follow a gluten-free diet. I can't believe how many people, including doctors, have so little faith in our abilities to educate ourselves about what we put into our bodies. Thank you for being a physician that stands up for us! -

ARCHIVED Does It Automatically Change The Initials?
melikamaui posted a topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
Just curious - Why does it automatically put the initials "C D" (but put together) into the words spelled out, "celiac disease"? Thanks! -
ARCHIVED Is Anyone Else Just Angry That Drs Missed Celiac For So Many Years?
melikamaui replied to HaileyRay812's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It is my personal belief that good nutrition is the key to everything. The key to health, happiness, longevity, and a good life. The fact that it is BARELY taught in medical school is a joke on the entire human race. So it does not surprise me that the medical establishment would over look a disease like celiac disease. Ask yourself, before your diagnosis... -
ARCHIVED First Sleepover
melikamaui replied to come dance with me's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Our favorite go-to dinner that everyone enjoys is a black bean and rice salad. Lettuce, beans, rice, salsa with tomatoes and avocado. I haven't found anyone who turns their nose up at it yet. For breakfast what about some gluten-free waffles, pancakes or fruit with toast? -
ARCHIVED How Much Would You Pay To Eat Your Favourite Gluten-Containing Treat?

Ooooh, Krispy Kreme! I hadn't thought of that. Oh yeah, I'd pay $100 to eat a Krispy Kreme glazed doughnut! -
ARCHIVED Panic Attacks, Seizures And Celiac?
melikamaui replied to kaki-clam's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have definitely suffered from panic attacks and had seizures quite a lot as a young adult. I didn't even think that it could be related to celiac disease until recently when I realized just how many things in my life are caused by undiagnosed celiac disease. When I went gluten-free I found that my panic attacks stopped. I hope you find relief soon. ... -
ARCHIVED How Much Would You Pay To Eat Your Favourite Gluten-Containing Treat?
melikamaui replied to kellynolan82's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'd pay $100 to eat something, but it would have to be an entire meal. My favorite pizza with my favorite dessert. I don't think I'd do it for just one thing though. -

ARCHIVED Migraines And Not Knowing
melikamaui replied to melikamaui's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks Katherine. I think one of the things that is most frustrating about celiac disease is all the guessing involved. Sometimes I just won't know what caused me (or my kids) to get sick. I have spent the better part of the weekend re-hashing the day before the migraine and have been terrified to repeat anything that may have caused it. No more dairy... -
ARCHIVED First Time On Plane Celiac
melikamaui replied to slee11211's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Pack food in your carry-on and lots of it. I made gluten-free spaghetti and placed it in small containers for me and my sons. I had no trouble getting it through security. We also brought trail mix, raw veggies and plenty of snack type items like crackers, cookies, and mints. On my final flight home from Italy I was last on the plane (thanks to a 6 year... -
After being gluten free for about 8 months I got my first migraine two nights ago. I hadn't had one since going gluten-free, but I used to get them regularly before that. This one was a doozy too! Now I'm wondering what on earth caused it. Could I have gotten contaminated somehow? I held a friend's infant who spit up on me. The baby isn't gluten-free...

ARCHIVED "glutened"? "contaminated"? What Do You Call It?
melikamaui replied to melikamaui's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I did talk to her about it and it went really well. I think she was scared to death because when my son was first diagnosed I was scared to death. I was freaked out (because he had been SO sick) and I was terrified that every little thing was going to make him sick again. Couple that with the use of a "scary" word and she got spooked. I totally understand... -

I'm sorry to say on our way home from Italy my son got contaminated by his "gluten free" meal on an American Airlines flight.
