  1. So, after 24+ hours of travel time my DD and I made it back to the good ole U S of A! I'm having wicked jetlag issues but am luckily at my mother's place so I don't have to actually do anything unless I choose to. I just have to squee a bit about all the wondeful shopping options that I've found in the stores...meat that doesn't contain gluten -- why...

I am impressed. I could not get through "House on the Strand" -- I gave it a valiant effort but that book just didn't do it for me... Next up for me is the new Dexter novel, "Double Dexter," -- think the earlier books were better than the last couple AND I'm always having to remind myself of what has happened in the books versus what has happened in the...
  3. I am living in Poland and almost all gluten-free products here are made with "gluten free wheat flour" -- that's the best way I can translate it. I think it is the same as the gluten-free wheat starch used in the UK, etc. Apparently it meets the EU standard of less than 20PPM. I only tried it once by accident (newly diagnosed and still trying to figure out...
  4. I'm moving back to Alexandria at the end of July -- I cannot wait to visit this place. I've only heard good things about it! Here's the web page with location and hours (closed Mondays & I think they are open later hours during the summer): Open Original Shared Link They are a ways up from the Braddock Metro. I'm thinking it will be perfect to...
  5. Welcome to the forums! You'll find lots and lots of information and support here. As for the nuts, are you sure it was the nuts that caused the problem? Did you try anything else different in the day or two before eating the nuts? A different brand of anything? Did you eat out? If you were eating with your fingers did you wash your hands before digging...
  6. I only had the ridges across my nails and those grew out/went away after being gluten-free for several months. Could it be related to malabsorption or vitamin deficiencies?
  7. I can't wait to try a Disney vacation...from everything I seen here on the forums people love them! Glad you had a good time!
  8. Congrats! Your numbers are dropping which is the direction you want to go! I can tell you what the doctor told me when I was diagnosed...she said to give the diet at least 3 months for ANY improvement in symptoms and 6-12 months to see real improvement. I had a blood test at 6 months gluten-free and my numbers had dropped quite a bit but weren't in the...
  9. I said it after 2 sets of positive bloodwork and the biopsy. I needed a definitive diagnosis due to my husband's employment (he works for the USG and we need medical clearance). Also, I am a really anal retentive type and not getting the biopsy would have always nagged at me. Besides, I'd been scoped previously due to chest pains (turned out to be severe...
  10. Oh Sweetie, you are in a tough place. I'm so sorry. The Celiac side of things has been nicely addressed in the previous post. As for nursing... I wasn't diagnosed when I nursed but I can tell you I found the first 2-3 months absolutely exhausting even without dealing with Celiac Disease. I also remember (from my experience and that of my friends who...
  11. Have you checked out the following thread: It contains invaluable information for those just starting out!

Wow, I knew the name Anne Perry sounded familiar...she's one of the girls from the Parker-Hulme Murder! Any recommendations from her extremely long list of published titles?

You'll do fine with it most likely. I also love DuMaurier; might have to try Christie again as I was a huge fan as a teenager but haven't even looked at any of her books in over 20 years. Gasp...I am getting old!!! I'm not familiar with Anne Perry and will have to check those out. Currently listening to a Ruth Rendell on audiobook, THE TREE OF HANDS...
  14. Ohhhh, what a wondrous thing! I just might have to buy one of these since I will have several trips down to visit in-laws over the next year (one downside to my hubby not going to Iraq!) 9 hours in the car + gluteney kitchens = me buying one of these so I can bring my own food!!!

    ARCHIVED So Sleepy!

Congrats on getting through your first week! Regarding being so tired...could be gluten withdrawal. Could be you aren't eating enough. Could be your vitamin levels. Could be a lot of things! Did you get your vitamin levels checked after the Celiac Diagnosis? Low levels can cause tiredness. What are you eating? I found that I had to really increase...

I have to warn you the books are not at all like American mysteries...I know a woman (American) who read IN THE WOODS and hated (more like HATED!!!!) the ending with a passion because it was not at all a typical American mystery ending. I found it very very appropriate and actually liked how the author did it. Not giving anything away by saying this...read...
  17. Congratulations!
  18. I forgot to include this in my previous post. This is an AWESOME (!!!) post with tons of information that will be helpful to newly-diagnosed you. It was done by Irish Heart who is active in the forums and has been supportive to so many of us and so generous in sharing her knowledge.
  19. Welcome, Tracy! You've come to the right place for support and information. Hmmmm....not sure there really is a "normal" recovery for anyone here on the forums! It all depends on how sick you were prior to diagnosis, how your body heals, how strict you are about diet, accidental glutenings, etc. I can tell you that the doctor who did my biopsy told...
  20. Search the forum via the Google search box in the upper right-hand corner. I know there have been threads about travel in CA and Las Vegas. You shouldn't have a problem in CA -- one of my oldest friends is in San Francisco and she told me that gluten-free is EVERYWHERE. Even her corner sandwich shop now has a gluten-free bread option. That being said,...
  21. Another Celiac told me she sticks a sugar packet in the bottom of the dish/bowl and then looks for it after they bring back the new salad.
  22. I have abdominal pain that they can't find a cause for...it is epigastric. Have been scoped, ultrasound, CT scan, etc. Nothing shows up. Currently I'm on 20mg amitriptyline in the evening which makes allows me to function at a somewhat normal level but I've only had a handful of pain-free days in the last year. I've been doing some research and while...
  23. I've been to Rome and Athens since my diagnosis. Both times I made sure to have the proper translation cards (I ordered the ones from Triumph Dining -- they are great!), and I did some online research about possibilities of buying gluten-free food (do they have it, where to get it, e.g. natural food shops, pharmacies, etc.), any possible gluten-free restaurants...
  24. Welcome to the forum. Your description of your symptoms was me prior to my Celiac diagnosis...plus I had awful GERD symptoms, drastic unexplained weight loss, dizziness and tremors, brain fog, nails that would tear and flake and such severe abdominal pain that I could not function! If you need a firm medical diagnosis for any reason (work or insurance...
  25. I'm using Nature's Bounty Chewable Probiotic Acidophilus with Bifidum -- I always take before breakfast and dinner. I don't always remember to do it before lunch and don't seem to take a hit if I forgot occasionally. I do notice my gut gurgle resurfacing if I slack off with them!
