Gluten Like Reaction To Sorghum?
birdie22 replied to birdie22's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
So my gas issue has returned today unfortunately. I made the King Arthur gluten-free bread yesterday and had a sandwich for breakfast. Just as last week with the Pamela's I've developed very smelly gas about 6hrs after eating it. I compared ingredients and they have tapioca flour and xanthan gum in common. However, I looked at the Udi's ingredients, which... -

Thanks for that info. I'll keep an eye on the xantham. -
Gluten Like Reaction To Sorghum?
birdie22 replied to birdie22's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Glad to know I'm not alone. I guess I'll look at the bright side that my reactions were clear enough to know that something was bothering me. I bought the gluten-free king arther bread mix today. No sorghum so well see how I tolerate this one. I'll use the same mixer and pan. If its ok then I'll know it's something in the Pamela's mix that doesn't agree... -
Anyone have a gluten like reaction to sorghum? I posted earlier this week about getting bad gas from Pamela's bread mix. I've had other Pamela's products and other gluten-free breads and the only ingredient that seemed different was that sorghum was the main ingredient. Once I stopped eating the bread the gas stopped. Well I ate the bread for four days and...

ARCHIVED Heartburn, Headaches, And Muscle Aches...how Long To Resolve?
birdie22 posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you have/had symptoms of heartburn, headaches, and/or muscle aches, I'm curious how long it took for those to improve after going gluten-free. I know it's different for everyone and it can take a while for some. I'm just curious about personal/individual experience. These seem to be the most lingering of symptoms for me. Aside from my 7 gluten challenge... -
ARCHIVED Lack Of Energy And Constipation.....still....
birdie22 replied to raea2002's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I found I needed to supplement 2000mg D3 daily to get my energy back up (and this was with testing w/ moderate normal levels of D). My doc started me with 1000mg and upped that about a month later. -
ARCHIVED Pamela's Bread Mix Causing Gas?
birdie22 replied to birdie22's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks Chad. Dang that sorghum. It's the first ingredient in her bread mix. And oh my did having a homemade loaf taste good. Guess I'll investigate another brand or suck it up and make my own flour mix. PS: Thankfully it appears their other mixes (pancake, brownie, etc) are sorghum free. -
ARCHIVED Pamela's Bread Mix Causing Gas?
birdie22 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Anyone have an issue with Pamela's bread mix giving them gas? I made a loaf for the first time on Sunday and have had 2 thin slices each day since. I've noticed that each day about 4-5hrs after that meal that I get smelly gas (sorry TMI). I've had other store bought gluten-free breads (like Udi's) and haven't noticed a problem. I also remember having Pamela... -
ARCHIVED Acne From Gluten?
birdie22 replied to CeliacFashionista's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I find this thread very interesting. I did a 7 day gluten challenge back in the beginning of April after having been gluten-free since November. In addition to a host of other things my face broke out terribly. I have always suffered from minor cystic acne (red painful bumps on my chin and forehead) since I was a teen. I did various rounds of abx and topicals... -
That's awful and you shouldn't be made to feel that way. A suggestion I have is to find out ahead of time where you are dining and call them the day of your dinner. Ask to speak to the manager and explain that you have a wheat allergy (more people understand the concept of allergy) and ask what they can do for you or tell them what you wi be ordering and...

ARCHIVED Good News! A Real Diagnosis!
birdie22 replied to birdie22's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Thanks for the additional food for thought. My iron is normal but ferritin is lower end of normal. My B12 hasn't been tested (that I can recall) but the doc thought it would be good for the buzzed/dizzy feeling and the tingling I had in the last 2 fingers of my right hand. I didn't take the B12 today since there's a small amount of it in the multi. My legs... -
ARCHIVED Good News! A Real Diagnosis!

Would flax seed be equivalent to flax oil? I've been putting ground flax into smoothies, sprinkled on gluten-free waffles spread with peanut butter, etc. I also decided to add back in my daily multivitamin in case the added iron would help. I had dropped it in favor of just doing D3, mag, and B12, and after some research revealed that some multis cause heartburn... -

birdie22 replied to teddylab's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think yes, it is likely you have an issue with gluten. I have very similar symptoms (bloating and heartburn was what brought me to my doc). While I am blood test neg for celiac I at least have non-celiac gluten sensitivity. All my blood tests for vitamins and minerals are also in the normal range like yours. But several were on the lower end of normal.... -
ARCHIVED Good News! A Real Diagnosis!
birdie22 replied to birdie22's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yes I did know that. The doc begrudgingly said she could refer me to a GI but didn't think it was necessary. Now that I've been gluten-free since Nov I don't think I'm willing to gluten challenge in order to be scoped. -

Thanks for the advice. My doc called today and my other tests were normal... PTH, CK, sed rate, CBC, chem panel. My ferritin is 43 (lower end of normal) and my calcium was high normal(10.1 and upper limit is 10.2). I had hoped that the mag and d3 would help with the aches. Now I need to find another solution. I've also encouraged my mom to get tested... -

Had my follow up appointment Friday with my primary care doc. Given the results of my 7 day gluten challenge (canker sore w/in 2 days, nausea, bloating, headache, heartburn, etc) she declared me (or at least listed on my take home paperwork) non-celiac gluten sensitive. Victory of sorts! At least it doesn't say IBS. She was also willing to do some more testing... -

My department has a weekly staff meeting and we take turns bringing a snack to the meeting. When it's my turn I bring something gluten-free. Every other week I bring my own snack. For a potluck I try to contribute something that is hearty enough that it could be a stand alone meal for myself assuming that I can't eat anything else. So I try not to bring fruit... -
ARCHIVED Results Of Going Off Gluten
birdie22 replied to marys2012's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Many of your symptoms are similar to mine (bloating, nausea, fatigue). With a positive dgp test I'd say so long to gluten for good. If you did want to do the endoscopy you'd need to remain on a gluten rich diet for accurate results. It will take a while being gluten-free to see positive improvements to all symptoms. While some say they feel great within... -
ARCHIVED How Should I Proceed?
birdie22 posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you've followed any of my prior threads you'll know that I'm blood test negative (had total IGA, tTg, dgp, etc) who has had a host of symptoms (nausea, headaches, canker sores, dizzy/buzzed, bloating and distention w/ epigastric pain, crushing fatigue, heartburn (but not reflux), cystic acne, tingling in fingers on rt hand) since Nov 2010. I started pursuing... -
Last week I did a 7 day gluten challenge and w/in 2 days I was ravenous. I'd wake up nauseated because I was so hungry. I had forgotten how hungry I was on gluten. It took 3 or 4 days of being gluten-free again to get that feeling to go away.

ARCHIVED I Thought I Had My Answer But Still Not So Sure
birdie22 replied to birdie22's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I ditched the gluten after April 10th. I savored those 3 thin mints and 1/2 a beer and started the next day gluten-free. While I wasn't feeling dire, I wasn't feeling great and it seemed like every day was something that was bothersome. So, day 3 now of being back on the gluten-free bandwagon and things are getting better. The canker sore which I've had for... -

I wonder what's wrong with the Reese's seasonal shapes. Is it a CC issue? DH bought me a pretty large Reese's PB bunny and the ingredients look fine. -
