The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
Adalaide replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I don't really have anything special. Just pots for boiling and the general stuff, funnels, thingers to pick jars in/out of water, a massive stockpile of rings and jars. I just do it the way my grammy did. My MIL's husband is obsessed with trying to get me to add preservatives to everything and to use his pressure canner. Nope, not interested. I just smile... -
The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat

We name our holiday things, like turkeys, hams, etc. Our Christmas ham was George. He was huge, and we canned his leftovers. On the lids I labeled him G F George 2012. In my head whenever I see them in the cold storage I hear it in the old GI Joe theme song sort of way. I know it is probably lame, but it brings us no end of amusement. Home canned meats also... -

I was off the the doctor this evening. I love that they have evening appointments. Didn't feel much like cooking though, we broke out a jar of Christmas George and had some smashed taters and gravy. Yum! I was too busy doing 100 things to get my green beans cooking so I'll have some as a late night snack. -
ARCHIVED Going To A Gluten Free Dinner Party!
Adalaide replied to Happyw5's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
If you do the cheese rolls/bread they have to be warm. They're super yummy, super easy... and super awful once they're cold. I'm usually a mac&cheese kind of person for that sort of thing. I also used to make a killer enchilada casserole although I haven't made it in a long time. I like it because it can be meat free if you want, or dairy free if you... -

My husband is still on the learning curve about chocolate. Whether or not he is enjoying it, his life is better when *I* have chocolate! -

Hah! I felt the same way about my tyramine list when the doctor handed it to me. Good thing I live in the valley and don't have the energy to get to a cliff. Seriously, the list is a mile long list of HEALTHY FOOD! I was like what.... the..... hell..... ' And yes, it is a hoot. At least we have something to keep us on our toes into old age. -
ARCHIVED Better N Peanut Butter- Really Gluten Free?
Adalaide replied to Sarahsmile416's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Less calories doesn't equal healthy. I shudder at that stuff you bought. Justin's is good imo, pricey but really really good. They have a full range of butters to choose from, and if you stick to an actual serving size (lol) it is full of healthy benefits that outweigh calorie sink. Besides, we NEED fat in our diets to stay healthy, and nuts are full of healthy... -
ARCHIVED Better N Peanut Butter- Really Gluten Free?
Adalaide replied to Sarahsmile416's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
After a week you will be having "reactions" to all sorts of things. Your body is still sorting things out. Before you jump on the train to other intolerances, you should probably be avoiding things with that many ingredients and sticking to whole foods. Such as actual peanut butter. Not everything you buy has to say gluten free on it, many things are naturally... -

I'm pretty snobby about my chocolate. I made the mistake the other night of bring my husband with me to the store, he about dropped dead when he saw the $9.95 price tag on the chocolate bar I wanted and I left without anything. (I'll just go back without him, I don't think he understands how this chocolate thing works.) Anywho, I was trying to track down... -
Some months are worse than others, but I have periods from hell. Endometriosis is a blast. My cramps are so bad that about 6/12 months a year I spend 1-2 days a month curled up in bed completely non-functional. My hormones go completely whacky, PMS doesn't begin to describe how much fun I am in the days leading up to my period. On top of that, I have always...

ARCHIVED Help!.....asap!
Adalaide replied to Michlootz's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have taken several prescriptions from a variety of companies since being gluten free. I have called on every one before I fill them. Every time I get "but we don't promise/guarantee it is gluten free blah blah blah statement." Having previously given similar statements myself working in a call center, we called these CYB statements. Cover Your Butt. Like... -

Awww ((((hugs)))) hang in there! Losing a friend is always a terrible thing, but we're all glad to still have you here. You aren't the only one to get mad, or upset about stuff like that. I about blew my top this evening when I found a bunch of my stuff in the "deli" drawer of the fridge. You know... the one everyone else in the house gets into while... -
ARCHIVED What Did You Have For Lunch Today?
Adalaide replied to love2travel's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I almost panicked. I got to my fridge and was all set to make a sandwich and there was NO MAYO! I quickly chilled out, remembering I have a recipe stashed, whipped some up in a few minutes and was stuffing my face with a Lebanon bologna sandwich in no time. Yup, homemade mayo for a bologna sandwich. I don't buy soup, I make it. You'll find recipes... -

You know me, always a team player. Such a burden, all this cheese. Tonight, pizza. I couldn't stand all the talk of it last night! I'll check out the thrift shops. I am more of a Griswold girl though, and will probably end up trolling ebay until I find a nice old antique. I still haven't gotten myself a new birthday cast iron pan. I don't have... -

I had a similarly awful experience with antidepressants. This is long before I was referred to a shrink though. After a truly awful string of events, I was suffering from very real depression. Instead of delving into what was causing it, the doctor immediately put me on Zoloft. (What I needed was therapy.) I didn't end up getting angry, quite the opposite... -

Karen, I just copied the email address into my personal email to contact them. I don't do email links on sites. Most of the time there is some lame popup involving outlook or some other complete failure of a program they like. Meh, I like my email, so copy/paste is just my standard now. Makes my life easier to just assume it won't work. -
I'm currently trying to talk my husband into a salon that uses Unite products. They are all gluten free. I'll still aim for an early appointment, but at least I'm not paying them for a bunch of crap they aren't even gonna do, like wash my hair. The problem is they charge a base of $45 for a cut, my husband is sort of freaking out.

spam look... some days are just those kinds of days. Isn't that the best? Being referred to a shrink was one of my favorite highlights. It is so reassuring know to know we aren't crazy. Well, not that kind of crazy. -

I figured out the problem with my apple "cheese" bread and it not puffing. I used egg replacer. Apparently it needs real eggs. Tried again tonight and have puffy apple sage little puffballs with pork. We almost had pizza, but then I dragged my husband out of the house to go looking again for the new Living Without. I found it and also indulged in an entire... -

Oh yeah, your body will do all sorts of idiotic things that will make you or but most of the time I find it isn't particularly alarming. Our car had a hump in the middle too. I had the sense to only have one sibling though. Oh, and to be the oldest. I would put the window down but your leg was touching my leg. Besides, I don't like the way the... -

So, because I have so much spare time while there are sleeping boys I called them to ask why they don't point out on the website that the products are gluten free. And to tell them they should. They said that I should send an email to Open Original Shared Link to let them know that they should make this information more readily available. (After confirming... -

Their shaving lotion was by far my favorite shaving product I ever purchased. When I picked up the bottle and read the word oats on the back of the label right after my diagnosis, I actually cried when I threw my bottle of it away. I never thought twice about it. I never considered the idea that a company would go to the trouble of using gluten free oats... -
ARCHIVED Theraflu Powder Has Gluten
Adalaide replied to Marie1976's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Some people are more sensitive than that. I live by the rule that no amount of gluten is ever safe. I will not knowingly ingest gluten, on purpose, no matter how small the amount. I have gotten extremely sick from "gluten free" products that are below 20 ppm in the past so clearly I am someone who can not live by that proposed standard. It isn't simply because... -

Some days, all you can do is feel like the 5 year old in the back seat asking "are we there yet?!?!?!" The answer is always no, but as long as the car keeps moving at least you know you're getting closer. And some days you whine and cry because being stuck in the back seat, along for the ride and nothing you can do to get there faster sucks. ...
