  1. Very beautiful vibes Gee-Ef (the script turned the letters into Gluten-Free)! We have so many celiac artists here by the way. Maybe we should do some collaborative work to promote celiac awareness (when we have time.. I'm swamped with late assignments). Just a thought.

You see, Dani, the list of things to think about when "thinking positive" is really quite endless when you start thinking about all our "gifts".

I see, yes :-) I tend to be a whiny cry-baby every time something that does not agree with my liking happens (as you might have noticed from all my vent posts), so I thought of doing something positive this time.. Which I think is perhaps God's way to prepare me for what's to come so I don't take it so hard haha :-)

As for the doc.. She didn't seem like the type of person who's open to patients correcting her. Until a better option than her pops up, I'm not gonna get on her bad side. It took me three months or maybe more to get the appointment.

I'm really so glad for having this board.

  2. Hi Dani, I'm sorry to hear the doctor wasn't very helpful, but I am not surprised. I went gluten free for a few weeks before managing to see a doctor and she wasn't that impressed, even though my worst symptoms cleared up on a gluten free diet!

She simply disregarded any possibility of me being coeliac, said it was IBS and wanted me to go back on eating gluten even though she wasn't that keen on testing me for it! Why would I want to go back eating food that I know was hurting my body, when the doctor advising me to do so wasn't supportive and frankly didn't seem slightly bothered about a word I was saying!

Although doctors are often unhelpful, there are plenty of other reasons to be positive! Great idea for a post, it's nice to think about the positives, not dwell on the negatives even though its difficult always feeling ill and feeling as if no one is listening!

I'm lucky to have a caring, sensitive boy friend who is very supportive, encouraging and takes great care of me whenever I am ill.

My boyfriends mother who knows a lot about the illness and has been very informative and supportive.

Wonderful parent's (who were confused at first) but now spend hours in the supermarket buying me safe food!

Starting to feel better after being gluten free for about a month! (This is the first month, in perhaps the last 4 years when I haven't been painfully ill or vomiting!)

Living in England and receiving free healthcare! (Although I've had plenty of bad experiences with doctors I am hoping to meet some understanding and positive ones soon!)

Enjoying eating again without being painfully ill after every meal!

Being excited about the possibilities of a healthy, gluten free life!

And meeting so many kind and encouraging people on this website, all of whom have helped me understand why I have been ill and taught me so much.

    *thumbs up* :-)

  3. Holy crappers, Squirmy, I think this may be the first time I may have been cited as a "worst case scenario" (at least that I know of--in print)

    Looool :-D

Look in the eyes of a person you love.

See the love in there reflecting back? ;)

See all the messages you receive every single time you post on here? People care about you and you haven't even met them yet.

Aww! Those were so sweet! and so true on all the positive vibes. Love them!

  4. I've booked another doctors appointment and keeping a food diary until then, still going gluten free and feeling so much better every day!

How did your appointment go with the doctor? Any closer to being officially diagnosed?

It went horribly. The doc was pushy and wasn't listening. I also didn't get the chance to talk about all the things I needed. I hope yours goes better. If you end up with a pushy doc, be as stubborn as you can, and don't leave without making sure you've said everything you wanted to say!

  5. Funny thing is, I actually work at Panera, close to a management position too. Unless you're a baker at night, you will never be handling flour at all, maybe a SLIGHT possibility of rice flour. I don't really want to quit working there since I really like it and it pays very well, but I will if it is the best idea for my health.

If it's a place where a lot of baking goes on, you might be either inhaling the flower through your nostrils, or you might not be washing your hands properly when it's time to eat. You can have gluten stuck even under your nails. You need a safe place to prepare all your meals (preferably at home).

I don't even set foot in a place where I know any type of baking goes on. To me it's like asking for trouble. You can't help it if you work there though, so pack your lunch from home, and wash your hands before you even touch your box/ bag.

  6. I have negative test results from my labs and from endoscopy but I get all the symptoms when I eat anything with gluten. Certain foods react more quickly than others but all do evoke a GI reaction and many times with palpitations and general swelling and sometimes general edema. I am not sure what to do. I stay away from anything I think even MAY have gluten and do better. Is this celiac? Is there something else I should be looking for?

What are all your symptoms? (in regards to stomach, bowel-movements, skin, thinking, mood, alertness, general well-being), and do you have any other conditions like diabetes, arthritis or thyroid problems?

  7. I don't love oats - but to be honest, I despise rice porridge and most bread and all that stuff= so I am finding breakfast really hard - especially to find something filling. Arrghh.

Can you do nuts? You can have a bowl of roasted nuts, pealed and diced apple or pear, and topped with honey or maple syrup. Very filling, nutritious and really yummy. You can even sprinkle a little Cinnamon on them. These days I have a bowl of frozen mango for breakfast. It would never have been enough for me before I went on the elimination diet, but when I started the diet and could literally have nothing but meat and leaf-greens, I truly missed fruits, nuts, and lots of vegetables. When I could add some of them back, I was totally satisfied by eating a plate of carrots and tomatoes. A bit of tomato could put me in bliss like soul food. Deprivation teaches us to enjoy and celebrate what food we can have, so don't worry too much about feeling full. It will come when your body starts adapting.. and then when you can find something new, just a little of it will be enough. I hope I was clear in what I was trying to say.

  8. My birthday was last tuesday, and it was decided that that was the day I could have and do anything I want. I wanted muffins.

I didn't want to spend hours making them, and I didn't want to buy 1000 ingredients, so I bought a bag of of my favorite shake and bake gluten-free chocolate muffins. I checked the ingredients, and it contained oat flour. I knew there was a chance I'd react, but oat flour is my favorite, and the label stated chocolate chip muffins, so nothing was going to stop me. Boy were they ever so good. I ate three the first day, and had mild cramps the next morning. I didn't think much of it, so I had more in the evening, and just a few hours after, I was in so much pain and agony from cramps + bloat that I couldn't sleep that night. I had residual cramps for two days after. (EDIT: I forgot to mention that the cramps came with a DH flare)

The good news is that it doesn't seem to be a long-term reaction thing, as it usually is with really being glutened. I'm not too fatigued, no infections or swelling, and I'm not a grouchketeer.

It all boils down to weather you like oats enough to try them now, or try them in two years when the chances you will react might be slimmer. How much do you like oats? ;-)

  9. bennl1, yes I'm aware of that. If she were open to diagnosing through my DH, I would have been able to get through this with maybe one or two glutenations?

I had to say no to the challenge, because I've developed stomach cramps which I've never felt before. They hurt, and they hurt a lot. I think it's cruel what they did to me. When I first called to book the appointment, the nurse specifically told me to continue being gluten-free.. I hadn't developed any painful painful abdominal side-effects at the time.

Pricklypear, What's a TTG? I feel like I need to learn all these things. I should have learned them earlier actually. Do you have any reading references on them?

  10. that the doctor would test her now, to me looks like as a second option because the gluten challange is declined.

The OP can clear it up ...

She took a blood test, and said there will be no further testing if it's negative. That's what I understood anyway. I even suggested they biopsy the rash but she insisted DH doesn't have to be linked to Celiac.

I know that it's her job not to give a diagnosis without testing. I agree with her on that one.

Since I'm a positive person from now on, I've decided that I'm going to be persuasive and insist I need help. I'm not gonna let it be :-) It's my life we're talking about!

  11. Okay, I'm searching for labs...haven't found one but I did find this Open Original Shared Link

ZRT in the US will do hormone testing internationally. Open Original Shared Link

Thank you so much Prickly. I'll look into them. I asked a friend today if she knew any private facilities and she said her sis might know one in Gothenburg too.. so I think I'll be having alternatives :-)

  12. While many on the forum complain about doctors not willing to do the test at all or testing when someone is insufficiently glutened so getting false negatives, you complain about the correct procedure. Or am I missing something here?

Not really. I consider the testing for a diagnosis thing as bad luck, and I'm complaining that she's not willing to test for deficiencies if my blood test comes back negative.

  13. I'm sorta new to all this and currently I'm about 3 month's gluten free. I've arrived the hard way, through a process of elimination. I'm learning every-day and I'm currently having about one or two bad days a week. Today's been a bad a day and yesterday a friend brought me a lobster sandwich, without mayo. I only had a small piece of the bread and ate all the lobster. God it was good but I wondered what today would bring. For me I've already eliminated dairy products, eggs, and all the gluten things like bread and pasta.

I'm off the coffee, tea, pop, no liquor but I do drink the soya milk. Might that also be a problem for me?

I'm glad I found this site because I need to speak with people in my situation.

I'm a 6'2" male, age 53, and I just went from 236 to 207 in the last 3 months. No withdrawal symptoms at all during the change over. I have not missed a days work over this but somedays were close.

Thanks for any guidence I can pick up along the way here.

    Gerard

Was the bread gluten-free? If not, even a crumb of bread will cause a reaction (if you have celiac).. You probably didn't get withdrawal symptoms because your body is still on gluten. Like kareng said more details are needed :-)
