ARCHIVED newbie: emotional issues accepting Gluten Free Life
Pauliewog replied to Gma of 3's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have a friend with MS, another with breast cancer and a third with RA. At the same age my only problem is I cannot eat gluten! So when I start getting frustrated about food I think about that and how lucky I truly am. Once you get in the swing of it it gets easier and then you start to feel better which makes it all worth it. Also when I first...- 8 replies

ARCHIVED Kirkland Artichoke Hearts
Pauliewog replied to Pauliewog's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks Kenlove. I know you have been in Japan so you'll understand when I say the artichoke hearts were on sale for 377 yen for the two jar set. Too good to pass up! As long as I can eat them! -
ARCHIVED Kirkland Artichoke Hearts
Pauliewog posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I found these on sale at Costco and I haven't eaten them in years. While they do not say "gluten free" they also don't have anything that I can see, aside from distilled vinegar, that might be an issue. I don't see any CC issues either. Just wondering before I dig in if anyone has had any experience good or bad with them. Thanks. -
ARCHIVED Traveling in Japan - Kikkoman Inquiry
Pauliewog replied to aliciahere's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I live in Japan and there is NO WAY I'd go near any Japanese soy sauce. The Gov. has a list of 27 "allergens" and Kikkoman Japan clearly lists "wheat" as an ingredient in the allergen section. There are (one? two?) soy sauces that can be found in supermarkets without wheat. But rather than wasting time searching for soy sauce, I'd say bring your own. You... -

ARCHIVED Lush Products
Pauliewog replied to Becksabec's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I use Lush products and have never had any problems. I really like the Big shampoo. I have used the conditioners as well as body washes (It's Raining Men and Happy Hippy). I also use the mint julip (?) lip scrub and the "let's rock and roll" face scrub. No problems! -
ARCHIVED gluten free body wash and shampoo?
Pauliewog replied to 1398-Days's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I started using the Acure brand that I buy from iherb.com. I live overseas so I don't have many ordering choices so iherb is best for me. But you might be able to find it from other online stores (Amazon, etc.). It says gluten-free and I have had no problems. I use the shampoo, conditioner and a couple of the body washes. Their under eye cream is great too... -
ARCHIVED Advice on reintroducing dairy.
Pauliewog replied to Chibiehotaru's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
just out of curiosity, can you try something like goat cheese? or something made from sheep's milk? It might give you the satisfaction of cheese without the dairy issue. -
ARCHIVED Japan (Tokyo And Kyoto) Gluten Free
Pauliewog replied to GiuCeliachia's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
"grown better" and "genetically modified" has nothing to do with gluten. I don't really understand what you mean by this "hypothesis." Gluten is gluten. Eating out in Japan is extremely hard due to soy sauce in everything. In fact, aside from plain yogurt, hard boiled eggs and fruit, there is nothing I'd eat in a convenience store. In a bar you can eat edamame... -
ARCHIVED Does it get any easier?
Pauliewog replied to 1398-Days's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It is important that you have your own cookware: pans, cutting board, knives, etc. My husband eats gluten but he has his set and I have mine! I have to keep an eye on him because he gets careless sometimes but I have never been sick from CC in my house. Yes, you have to be careful. It's really important to eat healthy food to heal. It's a pain, but that... -
ARCHIVED Toasty Coconut Macaroons

ARCHIVED Chia Brownies Recipe
Pauliewog replied to Pauliewog's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I cook with a scale so I just did it as is. No conversion, sorry! -
I stumbled upon this recipe and had zero hopes for it tasting good. I was wrong! It is fantastic and I have made it many times. The only change I made was to reduce the sugar by half. I start with the almonds in the food processor then add everything else in there to mix it. The "dough" is kind of hard so I find it easier to just drop it onto a baking sheet...

ARCHIVED Green Tea
Pauliewog replied to LookingforAnswers15's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I use tea bags all the time from various companies without worry. The only teas I worry about are those that are flavored like holiday blends. I have seen barley in those. As far as green tea goes, I highly recommend the Ito-en Ryokucha Premium Green tea matcha blend. It has leaf and a little matcha in it. It is by far the best green I have had. It just... -
ARCHIVED YOU ARE SO LUCKY
Pauliewog replied to poshepoche's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Well, I feel your pain. I am in Japan were there is also NO knowledge of Celiac/gluten sensitivity. In fact, I was printing off documents to give to my doctor to read! I never eat in restaurants due to cross contamination. I can't tell you how many times I have had the conversation: "Oh, you can't eat soy sauce because you are allergic to soybeans?" ... -
ARCHIVED Lindt Excellence 85% Bars
Pauliewog replied to Nikki2777's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
LIndt 85% was my go to chocolate for years. I LOVE it. One day I noticed the back label looked different. It now said "produced on shared equipment with wheat..." I contacted the company and they confirmed they changed their manufacturing line and the 85% was produced on a line with wheat. BUT, I live overseas and this chocolate has many languages on the... -
ARCHIVED Traveling To Japan With Celiac Child: Restaurants & Grocery Tips?
Pauliewog replied to subscribeg's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
The other day I forgot my lunch and ended up in a convenience store to buy lunch. Japanese convenience stores often have hard boiled eggs. They are in the "deli" section with salads. They are sold as two or one egg (vs. a pack of 6 or so which would be raw). I also got a banana and a cucumber! I had some salt in my car so it worked out fine. Sesame oil makes... -

Will you be on a 2 meal a day plan or 3? If you are on a 2 meal a day plan and you can keep a mini fridge in your room then you can always have yogurt, gluten-free cereal, peanut butter, etc. You can make at least one meal on your own.

ARCHIVED Shampoo And Other Personal Products
Pauliewog replied to grannyglut's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I didn't check it for being gluten free, but I am using Ban deodorant (green container). I bought it in Sept. and it is now Feb. and I am still on the same container! It lasts forever. So budget-wise, if you are looking for something that isn't too expensive and lasts a long time, I recommend that! -
There are a lot of recipes online for eggs cooked in muffin tins. They are mixed with vegetables and other goodies. If you have time on Sunday you could make up a dozen or so of those then keep them in the fridge to warm up on busy weekday mornings.

ARCHIVED Glutened By My Lipstick
Pauliewog replied to Zebra007's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
What was the ingredient in the MAC lipstick? I doubt it said "gluten" and it was more likely some hidden name. I'd like to check mine! -
ARCHIVED Gluten And Dairy Free Sweets?
Pauliewog replied to Zebra007's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I like dried cranberries and dried mangoes. Similar in texture to a chewy candy for me. -
American Airlines Gluten-Free Meals- Bad Experiences?
Pauliewog replied to MarzieK's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I take my own food. NO messing with what airlines might make. I find that cheese, salami, rice crackers travel well. I also bring bars (Lara, Kind) and nuts and fruit. Whatever I don't eat on the plane I just toss in the flight attendant's bag when they come around at the end of the flight to clean up. I've never had a problem taking anything through security... -
ARCHIVED Celiac In Japan And New Symptoms
Pauliewog replied to Japonpoko's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You can "make" your own mirin by mixing some sake and sugar. I've had homemade miso from a friend who made sure the kogi was from rice and I have been ok. Still makes me nervous. Yes, it is hard!
