ARCHIVED Got Better- Now Getting Worse!
aikiducky replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I react to vinegar as well. Nobody has apparently told my intestines that they're not supposed to! I haven't tried any distilled drinks lately, I prefer wine anyway. Pauliina -
ARCHIVED Frustrated!
aikiducky replied to SherriRoy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It's possible to have celiac disease that doesn't improve with the diet, it's called refractory then. It's very rare, but you could just be the rare unlucky one. At least your bloodtests went from positive on gluten to negative when gluten free and again positive on gluten. I would think that was a fairly good indication that you do indeed have it. ... -
The codex norm (that wheat starch needs to follow to be considered safe for a celiac) might be well and good for the average celiac... I suppose they've done some long-time studies to check that it's actually safe to eat wheat starch long term and not start to show damage??? But for a super-sensitive person like me it's a PIA!!! I can't even trust...

ARCHIVED Tea, Health And Celiac
aikiducky replied to AmandaD's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Nice to see there are so many tea lovers here! I love to drink genmai-cha as well, but not all the time... the taste is too ...distinctive to drink every day I think. My favorite is different kinds of Darjeeling, I shop at a local tea and coffee shop, and just ask for their recommendations. They keep tempting me with a First Flush (horrendously expensive... -
ARCHIVED Gf Brands, Mainstream Products, Or Pure Foods?
aikiducky replied to quantumsugar's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I eat mostly natural stuff, not packaged. I've been gluten-free for a year now, and I wanted to start out really careful. Now I'm beginning to experiment a little bit, but I only try one product at a time. I use different kinds of vegetables for variation. Now I've started to use more herbs as well. And when I crave something really sweet, I buy some... -
ARCHIVED Gluten And Casein Sensitive Results
aikiducky replied to Caroline's mommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
No, yoghurt can't be a part of a casein free diet. Casein is the protein in dairy, it's still there in yoghurt. What you might have been thinking about is a lactose free, or a low lactose diet...lactose is the sugar in milk, and yoghurt has slightly less lactose so some people who are lactose - intolerant can eat (some) yoghurt. ARCHIVED Explaining Gf As Lifestyle Choice.
aikiducky replied to dogear's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Actually I completely agree that it's nobody's business but mine that I choose to take care of my health. I think I'm fairly convincing about it in person, too, because I really have had amazingly little doubting reactions from people. But, I am self diagnosed, and so from time to time, it's just GOOD to get a bit of validation. That's all. To... -
Would it be possible to let another doctor have a look at your biopsies? I don't know how it works exactly - are there like samples of tissue that someone else could look at and give a second opinion? Pauliina

ARCHIVED Vomit
aikiducky replied to Eliza13's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I guess the burning liquid could be stomach acid. If you hadn't eaten right before throwing up and your stomach was empty it could be clear. Pauliina -
ARCHIVED Explaining Gf As Lifestyle Choice.
aikiducky replied to dogear's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Tiredofdoctors, thank you. As a self-diagnosed person, that was really good to hear. Pauliina -
ARCHIVED I Was Just Diagnosed Monday Finally!
aikiducky replied to shirley ann's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I promise you, it will get easier. There's lots you can eat, you just haven't found it yet. Buy some plain meat and potatoes, cucumber, tomatoes, salad... there's your meal, naturally gluten - free! I used to eat loads of bananas in the beginning, because their safe, easy to digest and I like them. There are lots of friendly people on this board... -
ARCHIVED Upset- I Know That I Was Glutened
aikiducky replied to PicturePerfect's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The wheat starch might not be completely gluten free.. but the amount might have been so small that you don't get noticeable symptoms from it. That's not unusual, not everybody is supersensitive. I bet if you continued to eat the taquitos for a few days that you would start to have symptoms though. Whenever I start to get doubts, I dare myself to eat... -
ARCHIVED Does Gluten Intolerant Mean Cd Will Kick In?
aikiducky replied to Jeepster's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Another thing to bear in mind is that the intestinal damage is not something that happens all in one go. It's possible, and IMHO highly likely, that you're in the beginning stages of celiac disease, when there just isn't a lot of damage to show YET. So if you stop eating gluten now, you'll be one of the lucky few to have caught on early, and prevented a lot... -
ARCHIVED If You Could Eat Whatever You Wanted And
aikiducky replied to rmmadden's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm in the who cares about gluten, I miss dairy camp! I'd eat chocolate bon bons... belgian ones... <drool> Ice cream Muesli with milk Actually, as long as it's low lactose, I do eat some ice cream in the holidays. I get tired and gassy but if I don't have to work... Pauliina -
ARCHIVED When I Get Glutened, This Works For Me...
aikiducky replied to cornbread's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I took a vitamin B complex that has B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, folic acid and a few other things I don't know English names for for quite some time. Nowadays I don't feel like I need it (gluten-free for a year) but I take one or two when I get badly glutened. It helps a lot with the mind fog and, though not so dramatically, the fatigue. Pauliina -
ARCHIVED How Were You Diagnosed?
aikiducky replied to krisb's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I screwed up my chances of diagnosis by going gluten free before testing. I'd had D for a month, started suspecting it could be celiac so I went gluten free for a couple weeks. Felt infinitely better so I persuaded my rather sceptical doctor to do the blood test. My plan was to go back on gluten for a few weeks again, but after one bowl of muesli the pain... -
ARCHIVED I Think I Am Worrying Far To Much
aikiducky replied to nickhills1's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't think your doctor's suggestion is all that crazy... He's probably thinking, try gluten free for a couple weeks, see if you feel any better, go back on gluten, see if you feel worse, and then do the test. At least it sounds like he's taking it seriously! Pauliina -
It's new for your husband, he'll need time to adjust to the thought that things are different now. Refusing to kiss him might feel like rejection to him, so you need to keep that in mind. That said, a breadcrumb in his mouth could get into yours when you kiss, and make you sick. You CAN get glutened by kissing! So he needs to keep that in mind. What...

ARCHIVED Feeling Bad In Russia
aikiducky replied to RussCourt's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
One thought I had was you could maybe look for companies in Finland. There's quite a high awareness about celiac in Scandinavia in general, lots of companies that make gluten-free food. Maybe some of them would be willing to ship to Russia. Pauliina -
ARCHIVED Did I Finally Find An Answer?
aikiducky replied to Claire415's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
For what it's worth, I think it sounds like you could well have celiac. It would be worth it to get tested. Sorry to hear you are having so many health problems, and such an unhelpful doctor... Pauliina -
Exercise only without changing eating habits is actually not enough for most people. Sad but true. Pauliina

ARCHIVED B12/iron Deficiency & Acne !
aikiducky replied to Evonneda's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Eating a lot of soy will give me terrible acne. If you're using soy milk or eating a lot of tofu and stuff, it could be an idea to leave that out for a while and see what happens. Pauliina -
ARCHIVED I Know I Am Being Waaaaay Oversensitive Here
aikiducky replied to skoki-mom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I guess the word celiac gets used a bit like lactose intolerant. I mean it's perfectly natural for me to say I'm lactose intolerant, and similarly I could imagine saying I'm celiac. But to use it as an introduction of another person, umm.. "Meet my friend Pauliina, she's a nail biter."... Pauliina -
ARCHIVED I Have Two Questions...
aikiducky replied to fisharefriendsnotfood's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I usually explain that my body mistakes a gluten molecule for a bacteria or virus, and starts to defend itself, but because there isn't actually anything to defend against, the antibodies start to eat up my intestines instead. Some people understand the explanation and are fine, others don't but it sounds impressive enough that they are fine anyway. Or maybe... -
One thing I do for a quick meal is a bag of salad (a BIG bag!), chuck it in a bowl, add lemon juice, olive oil, a bit of salt, herbs, and then whatever I feel like, tuna from a can/ egg/ goats cheese/ olives/ nuts... doesn't involve any kind of chopping or cooking, just mix it all in a bowl. The portion I nowadays make for myself is what I'd have considered...
