ARCHIVED Please Help With New Questions Re:lab Work
aikiducky replied to julie5914's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I think trying casein-free for a couple weeks might be a good idea. Pauliina -
I tolerate goat milk bettter than cow milk, too. The only bit of milk I have nowadays is a bit of goat cheese at breakfast, actually. Drinking goat milk wouldn't be an option for me, because it still does have lactose which I also can't have, but cheese is ok. Pauliina

aikiducky replied to Rachel--24's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Rachel, are you still coming in contact with gluten at work? I thought you worked in a place where that was a concern? Pauliina -
ARCHIVED Do I Gluten My Baby?
aikiducky replied to Nikki~Nathan&Danielle's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I wonder about that really. Some people seem to go easily from gluten free to eating gluten and back. I wonder if it mightn't be that when people have trouble starting to eat gluten again that it is a sign that they really are sensitive to it, only their bodies are able to adjust to some degree after a while on gluten? I remember reading that both introducing... -
Oooh, the Codex norm... I wrote a rant about it already once (in a thread about Norway)... I'm really sensitive, and so I can't trust ANY products, even the ones labelled "gluten free" because they still might contain an amount of gluten that is under the norm, and well, I react to them. So any product lists etc. over here are almost useless to me...

ARCHIVED Could I Please Have Some Help With My Results?
aikiducky replied to Nikki~Nathan&Danielle's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You're maybe hoping that it isn't true? A partially gluten-free diet doesn't really do much good I'm afraid, even very small amounts of gluten do damage if one is sensitive to it, so whether your son has celiac or just an intolerance, the diet is the same, 100% gluten free. A positive blood test is positive, weak or not. How high the numbers are depends... -
And oats aren't safe in most of Europe, either. In Finland and Sweden you can get oats that are grown on dedicated fields, but that's only two countries I know of. Maybe rest of Scandinavia , too? Pauliina

I did email as well. This articlke might be a nice one to give to family and friends...they might not want to listen to a doctor, but they might read a more popular site, who knows? Pauliina

ARCHIVED Asymptomatic Kids ?
aikiducky replied to Siobhan's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I also wonder whether the steroids could skew the test results? It might be wise in any case, whatever the tests say, to try the diet for a while and see what happens. Pauliina -
ARCHIVED Confused W ?'s About Diet
aikiducky replied to brice1401's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Maybe it might make sense to have a follow-up biopsy after a couple years to see if damage has healed, for someone with mild to no symptoms to go by. Pauliina -
ARCHIVED All Or Nothing?
aikiducky replied to JenM's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Rachel really nailed it in her last post I think. I think it's actually a bit confusing to compare lactose intolerance and gluten intolerance, because I don't think the mechanism in question is the same. Lactose intolerance is simply a question of lacking the enzyme to digest lactose, but as far as I know that's not the case with gluten intolerance. If... -
ARCHIVED Haven't Been Intimate In Months, But Funny...
aikiducky replied to lorka150's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You know when you have a little cut on a finger that gets inflamed and red and a bit swollen? That's what I imagine my intestines to be like. And when the swelling goes does, all the skin that's been stretched out by it is going to hang loose. No amount of working out is going to help with that I'm afraid. Pauliina at least, that's my explanation... -
ARCHIVED Teeth/root Canal Problems Anyone?
aikiducky replied to gabby's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Tooth pain doesn't necessarily have ANYTHING to do with your teeth! If the teeth repeatedly turn out to be healthy, you should look at other possibilities. Here are a couple of muscles that can refer pain to the teeth, among others: "# Masseter (TMJ, tinnitus, toothache, and "sinus" in both upper and lower molars). For its size and weight, the masseter... -
ARCHIVED Well I Just Found Out I Have Celiac Disease
aikiducky replied to Baston8005's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you already have experience with brewing your own beer, maybe you could brew beer with gluten free grains? Start reading this messageboard, and celiac.com, you'll be an expert in no time. Here are, roughly, the stages you'll go through, just so you know... denial, anger, grieving, acceptance. Don't spent too much time in denial, just as much... -
ARCHIVED Still Not Healing
aikiducky replied to emily ann's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Another idea is to check that your vitamin and mineral levels are in order. You might need to take some supplements, at least for a while, to build up your stores again. I get glutening-like symptoms from dairy, too. I do tolerate goat's cheese though it seems, at least in the small amounts I eat it nowadays. Pauliina -
ARCHIVED Swelling Of Ankles And Hands?
aikiducky replied to Mjohnson73's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Give it more time before you panic, Stephanie. It could be that with the vomiting and D that you just couldn't retain that much fluid before... Hopefully it'll improve when you start to heal. Pauliina -
ARCHIVED Haven't Been Intimate In Months, But Funny...
aikiducky replied to lorka150's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You know, I hadn't really thought about it, but when I get glutened I do drink more, and of course, I look pregnant, too. Then usually one day a week or two or three later I go to the bathroom a lot and the bloating goes down... I guess it could be some kind of a protective reaction of the body to collect a lot of fluid... I'm not bloated from my last... -
ARCHIVED Almost Gluten-free?
aikiducky replied to JenM's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That's correct. Otherwise you might just as well not bother. It's an all or nothing thing. It's worth it though, when you finally start to feel well. Pauliina -
ARCHIVED Gastro Put Me On Gluten Challenge
aikiducky replied to Wandering Hermit's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hermit, I was wondering if you have cut out dairy altogether from your diet, or just lactose, and still eat low-lactose dairy products? I used to think I was only lactose intolerant, but I tried going completely dairy free for a while, and trying some low-lactose stuff later made me feel very lethargic again. Maybe youre completely dairy free already and... -
ARCHIVED Small Bowel Bacterial Overgrowth
aikiducky replied to nelsonmyers's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I thought the breath test is for lactose intolerance? How does it show bacterial overgrowth? Or is it that if you have bacterial overgrowth, the lactose intolerance test is more painful that it should be. I'm not sure I understand, as you can see. Pauliina lactose intolerant since age 7... -
Just to add my opinion - I think it's best to have all the testing available, so if you are still eating gluten, by all means do have blood drawn and a biopsy. Personally what I'd do is do the blood test and biopsy, then if those were negative, try the diet for a while (a few months), and if I felt that I was improving on the diet, maybe do the Enterolab...

Swittenauer, it's really good to read the other side of the story, too! I can understand how it's not so easy to just think that it's the gluten talking, if you haven't had any warning beforehand! How my husband deals with my glutened ravings depends a lot on what his day has been like, if he's not too stressed himself he can deal with it. I got glutened...

ARCHIVED Pain. Connected To Cd Or Cocidence?
aikiducky replied to VydorScope's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Elisabeth, if your son got glutened yesterday, then I think he could expect to have some pain after meals for some days. Everybody's reaction is different, but when you've had some gluten, the intestines are especially irritated in the beginning part, you know the part right after the stomach. So when food starts to move from the stomach to the small... -
ARCHIVED Ttg Numbers
aikiducky replied to AmandaD's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If I've understood everything I've read about this correctly, you really shouldn't read too much into the numbers. Thing is that we all have our individual immune systems that may produce different amounts of antibodies. So two people could have the same amount of damage and be feeling equally sick and miserable, but have very different numbers. Pauliina -
ARCHIVED What Could This Mean?
aikiducky replied to mart's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I don't understand why doctors in general are so reluctant to recommend a gluten free diet anyway. Even when it's highly likely that a person has celiac disease, they'd prefer to see one eat gluten until there's extensive and maybe permanent damage before recommending the diet. A grumpy way of saying, yes, I wholeheartedly agree with you. Your daughter...
