  1. Welcome to the board. The EMA IgA test is one of the last tests to become positive for celiacs in the course of the disease. It only appears in response to a significant amount of damage that has already been done to the intestines. It really is not the best test for early celiac detection - in fact, it can appear falsely negative in young children just...
  2. I hope you continue to feel better.
  3. You might want to find out waht that thyroid test was - I was always told I was normal but when i got my medical records because my doctor left, i discovered that I wasn't always normal, or I barely was within range. I've heard many stories about celiacs who had slightly abnormal tests glossed over too... it's discouraging.
  4. Those first few weeks are really tough. I went through a withdrawal of sorts and felt extremely tired, headachey and cranky for about 2 weeks. After that first month milestone, it starts getting easier. Hang in there, and come to vent any time.
  5. I'm sorry to hear you've had such a rough go. There are a fair number of people around here who "lost" many foods to sensitivities and allergies, but many of the eventually got those foods back. Hopefully they'll have some advice and success stories for you. Best wishes.
  6. L-glutamine can help with muscles healing, and so it also helps in our muscular small intestine. You might want to try that supplement - it's often around the protein powders in health food stores. Don't worry, you won't be back to square one. There might be some injury, but after 18 months gluten-free your inflammation levels are probably waaay down...
  7. That is a long time... can you ask to be put on a wait list to get in sooner? Good luck!
  8. I wish you some clear and concise results! Make sure they take 6 or more samples. Good luck!
  9. I think your doctor's explanation of discounting the DGP IgG test was ... pretty lame. Why would they run it if they are just going to ignore it? I think some doctors just don't like to label it as celiac because they think the diet is "too hard" which is total hogwash - there are quite a few foods out there that would be harder to get out of our diet if...
  10. I think it's smart to get those blood test copies. They could tell you a lot. The DGP is one of the better celiac tests for early celiac disease or eating "gluten light" - it won't be as accurate as if you were eating gluten everyday for a couple of months but it might work for you. I think gluten intolerance is a spectrum, and this view is becoming more...
  11. Yes, blood work is usually the first step. For most people that works out (but not all) just make sure they ran all (or most) celiac blood tests (DGP IgA and IgG, tTG IGA and IgG, EMA IgA, total serum IgA controltest, and possibly the older AGA IgA and IgG ). Some celiacs are also lactose intolerant. That can make the same, or very similar symptoms to...
  12. It sure does! Hopefully they'll come up with something in the near future. NCGI has only been recognized for a couple of years so testing needs some catch up time.
  13. What appears to be your DGP IgG is positive. It is often a good early test for the disease, unlike the EMA Iga which requires a fair bit of damage to register a positive - yours appears negative. I would say it looks like you could be a celiac. DGP tests are pretty specific and sensitive to celiac. Yours is over double the accepted range. Now... many...
  14. The most commom full celiac panel is: Deaminated Gliadin Peptides (DGP IgA and DGP IgG) - very sensitive and specific Tissue transglutaminase antibodies (tTG IgA and tTG IgG) - the usual first test, it is sensitive but not as specific Total serum Immunoglobulin A (IgA - this is a control test) Anti-endomysial antibody (EMA IgA)- very specific and sensitive...
  15. It sounds like you have something autoimmune going on to me - your symptoms sound so very much like mine did (except that I had more joint problems) and unfortuantely I have a few AI issues. I'll comment on your symptoms as they related to mine; I'm not a medical professional so I can only add what I've learned based on what I've researched because of my...
  16. Be careful of baking supplies that are contaminated too. A bag of sugar might be contaminated by a measuring cup that was first used in flour. Stuff like baking powder, icing sugar, baking soda, salt, etc should be taken into consideration.
  17. I have not heard of growth resuming in a person's thirties. I don't believe size is often an issue for childbearing unless the pelvis is extremely small, but I am far from a medical expert.... Welcome to the board. I hope you have great success with the gluten-free diet.
  18. I don't know much about the tests you listed, but I have had so e positive results with homeopathic remedies...when it is the right remedy that is. If you are taking the wrong remedy, it can actually induce the symptom it would improve in others. There are not many remedies that i take on my own except for arnica or to treat a virus - i've had great success...
  19. I get migraines from gluten, so I would say that it is possible the twizzler caused it...but that is a very small amount. If your symptoms have gone while on the gluten-free diet, I think sticking with it would be wise - especially if your twin has celiac disease which makes it more likely that you do too. As an aside, hypothyroidism (Hashimoto's) can...
  20. Others around here have had gas as one of their symptoms, but I don't believe it is the only symptoms for them, i am not sure of that though. idid not have that symptom myself, I usually got bloated with gas. I did get lightheaded often though. I think it was a hypoglycaemia of some sort, and I found it did improve with less grain consumption. Best wishes...
  21. Ditto Takala. You will need to eat gluten in moderate amounts (1-4 slices bread a day) for about 6 weeks (times vary) together a fairly accurate test. The DGP IgA or IgG will probably be the best test for you as they tend to test positive earlier into the damage than the ttg or EMA tests would (as I understand it). The older AGA tests can show up sooner too...
  22. No, no, noooo... That's Canadian! Well, except our west coast - they don't count. And socks with sandals... that's almost the only way we can wear sandals except for July and August. Yep, wool socks with sandals - i am so very very cool. Wierd weather up here too. i had a snowball fight in the yard with my boys yesterday. My arm is still sore form...
  23. I felt very tired and down during my second and third week gluten-free. I remember that feeling of exhaustion; for me, I felt really good at 1-2 months into the diet. Hang in there. Hashimoto's hypothyroidism slows your metabolism by about 10-15%. It makes food stay in the gut longer and often results in constipation. It also causes fatigue, low pulse...
  24. I agree that it could be another AI issue that was perhaps exacerbated by gluten (in the past) so it appeared more often. I would make a note of it and perhaps see your doctor. That happened to me too at the 2-3 month mark and I strongly suspected that it was rheumatological or hashimoto's related. If you think it is gluten related, only more time on the...
  25. I thought I had all of the gluten out of my diet and then 6 months in I began accidentally glutening myself with some fries I thought I had checked. It was minute amounts, and only every few days, but it was enough to make me feel slightly ill. I had to go back to checking every label before I ate anything (not a bad practice anyway). I think you might want...
