  1. TMI... In hindsight, I've had celiac my entire life, and during that entire time I was constipated. If I had a quick trip to the bathroom, I was pleasantly surprised. Diarrhea happened maybe once or twice a year and was usually linked to a flu or food poisoning. I had migraines 2-3 weeks a month, and now that I'm gluten-free I get them 2-3 days...
  2. Is it ttg IgA or EMA IgA levels that are low? Doctors often run a serum IgA to make sure we have adequate levels of IgA in our bodies to properly test for ttg IgA or EMA (IgA). There is a small portion of the population (I *think* it was about 5% - can't quite remember) who are deficient in IgA and will test negative for celiac even when positive. If she...
  3. I've had a fair bit of sciatic pain and back spasms over the last 15 years due to bulging discs (that doctors told me couldn't be helped... why do i ever believe them?). My L5 disc burst a couple of years ago and now I have paralysis in my right leg; I skipped numbness and tingling. LOL That occurred while I was still undiagnosed, and I've only been...

    ARCHIVED I

Congratulations on your awesome recovery! I'm very happy for you. And thanks for sharing your story; it was wonderful to read such an upbeat and positive story. Thank you!
  5. MitziG and Neroli, there is an old post on microwaveable buns that had a recipe for "Rye Buns". I haven't tried it yet but it is here (go to page 7) : This is what it said: I make their basic microwave buns all the time for my boys, I just substitute out the almond meal and add 3/4 tbs coconut flour, plus we skip the cocoa and add cinnamon...
  6. You're right about Amaranth. They'll give you a print-out of your purchases at the end of the year, and they mark each item on your receit as gluten-free. Very handy. I recommend checking out the library's cook books before you buy (unless you like to collect cookbooks). There are soooo many now, and some are more appealing and complex than others. There...
  7. I'm Canadian, so I'm just repeating what I've seen said on the forum before.... I assume that part of it is that you could get sicker and have complications if you don't comply with the diet. Many health care professionals seem to think its a difficult and expensive diet to follow. Also, Celiac is an autoimmune disease and AI diseases seem to...
  8. 1:80 is not a very high positive so try not to worry too much.... Easier siad than done, right? Even an infection (like an ear infection) can raise it temporarily. The speckled pattern is found with many autoimmune disorders (like RA, MCTD, lupus, sjorgens, Raynauds, Hashimotos) but it is also found in almost a quarter of the healthy population too. Hashimoto...
  9. Aw... thanks Neroli! I've printed it off and I'll give it a try. That was nice of you to do. ... And Company's Coming Gluten Free Cookbook has a yummy looking recipe and starter for sourdough. I'm afraid I don't have the recipe but the picture made my mouth water.
  10. Lisa gave you great advice. As long as you don't need that piece of paper saying you are celiac (which from what I heard can make it harder to get health insurance) you should probably just go back to eating gluten-free. It sounds like you didn't do well reintroducing it back into your life anyways... and I hope you recover quickly from your gluten challenge...
  11. Sheesh! Really? Grr.
  12. 1. Beer. gluten-free beer is ok, but I was a beer snob before and the fact that I can't have a Brewster's stout or two this winter is really disappointing. 2. My grandmother's recipe for sweet dough cinnamon buns. They were absolutely amazing, and it makes me a bit sad I'll never taste her recipe again. I'll miss this the most. 3. Perogies... but...
  13. LOL I hear you! Read up on it at the library instead; the CPL has a TON of books that you can go on-line to arrange a hold to go to your nearest library (as long as you know your library card number). Just type in gluten-free or celiac and you'll get 20+ books listed. Green's book, Celiac Disease: The Hidden Epidemic is really good. There are good travel...
  14. Very grey area. LOL Some doctors are old school and want the biopsy, others consider positive blood work (especially ttg IgA and EMA) with or without symptoms enough. I was diagnosed without a biopsy and I know it's becoming more common. I think biopsies are most useful for those who have negative blood work for what ever reason. Many have been diagnosed...
  15. I am in the process of checking out the possibilty that I have lupus. I was diagnosed celiac just 4 months ago and with Hashimoto's 2 months (although I suspect I've had them since babyhood and my early 20's). I started looking into lupus after being gluten-free for many months and beginning treatment for hypothyroidism when I had a "flare" of symptoms....
  16. I don't know if this is helpful or not (I bf my 3 boys exclusively until 6 months while I was an undiagnosed celiac) but all of my babies had green poops on ocassion, as well as mucousy too. I was told that was fairly normal, it just indicated that the baby hadn't got much of the hindmilk... I would talk to your doctor to see if the GI appointment can...
  17. Huh, Silver Springs. Small world is right! I'm assuming as long as the doctor diagnoses you as celac, and you provide Revenue Canada with that info, you'll probably be fine. I've been saving receits but I doubt it would be worth the work for me. I've also heard (just on-line so it should be taken with a (large) grain of salt, that one is more likely...
  18. I understand, I did a double take when my test showed a positive too. Yes, I'm in the NW. Probably further up Crowchild than you; Crowfoot is near me. I have no idea about the wait time for an endoscopy. My doctor didn't push the endoscopy at all; he left it up to me. Ttg IgA and EMA was enough for him to call it celiac. That was fine by me...
  19. Oh no. That's a positive test. Those Biocard tests are like home pregnancy tests, a positve line only shows up if its, well... abnormally positive (for ttg IgA). You're right, I too had a very faint positive test. VERY faint. I first read the test in dim lighting and I almost dismissed it but then I ran over to a light to have a better look. I had...
  20. I am sorry for your loss. And kudos to your husband.
  21. Could school be the issue if it happens on Sundays and Mondays. Perhaps something is causing stress at school?
  22. My stomachaches improved within a few days but I went through a withdrawal with made me feel tired, cranky, and unwell. It lasted a couple of weeks, perhaps your daughter is feeling some withdrawal too. Best wishes.
  23. Many celiacs have low vitamin levels because we don't absorb nutrients as well as we should. Common low vitamins are B12, D, calcium, iron and ferritin. There are a few others but I'm afraid I can't remember them. A quick "Dr. Google" search will probably give yo a good list of vitamin levels that you could request you doctor check. Some doctors don...
  24. Treatment is giving up gluten, although some people also add vitamins (some sublingual/under tongue) since some can be low, and many use probiotics and supplements (like glutamine or papaya) to help in the digestive process. Many also end up with other issues like dairy, soy, corn or nightshade intolerances from their damaged intestines; some of these are...
