  1. I don't think that you are a neurotic mom. He has symptoms and a positive test. To e, it makes sense that you would look into it more. The tTG IgG is very specific to celiac disease, 95% of positives are caused by celiac disease, so it is likely that he has celiac disease. Some people, young children and those with early celiac disease, will end up...
  2. Ditto the others. When it is time to be gluten-free you must be 100% gluten-free, but if you have more testing coming up you should not be gluten-free yet. It takes some people a long time to get all better once gluten-free. I was still having such extreme pain that I was convinced that I must have RA or lupus. Some of my symptoms became much worse before...
  3. Welcome to the board. Some doctors will give a diagnosis with just positive celiac blood tests, especially when it is the tTG IgA and EMA IgA. Together they are almost 100% specific to celiac disease - as sure a thing as you are likely to get. My doctor was in no doubt that it was celiac disease with those two tests being positive so he gave me the...
  4. I put my blueberries in when the batter goes into the cup. I don't mix the berries in - the batter always ends up blue.
  5. Glad she is in line to get into the endocrinologist. And ditto the nodules. Most people with thyroid issues have some small nodules - nothing to worry about.
  6. I agree. Drink whatever you want. I rarely drink, it just doesn't appeal, so I tend to drink juices or pop. I don't think anyone has ever pushed a drink on me except for my uncle who was an alcoholic - he didn't like to drink alone. We are early birds around here, especially my kids who don't do well after 10:00pm. We're inviting friends over to celebrate...
  7. My kids were tested and were negative but two of them have been much healthier gluten-free. I am positive that they have some sort of issue with gluten but I have no idea if it is celiac disease or NCGS. I just tell people it is celiac disease since the treatment is the same. Technically, they have no diagnosis of anything. Actually many doctors think...
  8. Most grains have protein like wheat, just avoid the starches. Meats, eggs, and dairy are the easiest sources of proteins but most plants will have some too Have you looked into protein powders? If you find a mild one it is very easy to add it into your baking or others recipes, and of course putting it into smoothies is tasty too.
  9. I went looking for scientific articles with patients who have celiac disease but not the DQ2 or DQ8 genes, and there wasn't much. Most reiterated that the vast majority of celiacs have the DQ2 or DQ8 genes but most also mentioned a small minority of confirmed celiacs who did not have those genes like this one file:///C:/Users/Bowen%20family/Downloads/ICDS...
  10. Groan! I hate grabbing the wrong bag. I've done that so many times and then I pout when I realize I can't eat it. LOL
  11. There probably are other genetic components that cause celiac disease. We have only known about the DQ2 and DQ8 for a few years now, and doctors agree that approximately 3% of celiacs do not have either of those genes.... It happens. It will be interesting what other links they discover in the next few years. Welcome to the board, nettinpete. It looks...
  12. Congrats! I second Bartfull's vote to elope. I loved wearing a wedding dress but the wedding was a big expense that could have been spent on other things, and it was such a busy day that I barely remember any of it as it is. But, if you do have a wedding, a pig roast is a fun thing to do and not likely to get contaminated. Roast some potatoes...
  13. About a third of all celiacs go through a withdrawal in the first few weeks gluten-free - I did. I had a killer migraine, was extremely tired and very moody and cranky. Ugh. It wasn't a happy few weeks but it did pass and I felt human again. Hang in there. You might be about to turn a corner and start feeling much better.
  14. Thanks! Ah sugar, my nemesis. I have a truce with sugar for the holidays. I think I am just as sensitive to gluten as most celiacs but my reactions are not as extreme in the short term. Not ill feeling, jst pain
  15. I agree with Cara. The EMA IgA is about 99% specific to celiac disease. If he has symptoms, celiac disease in the family, and a positive EMA IgA, then he has celiac disease. Some doctors want all the stars and planets to align before they give a celiac disease diagnosis but in the meantime they seem to forget that their patients are suffering and celiac...
  16. There's something about being at home with mom that brings out the child, or childishness, in people. He probably just wanted to complain at that moment. If he really felt deprived he could have run out to the store to buy himself some treats. Probably just a bit of sibling rivalry got brought back up for a moment. I hope the rest of the holiday went...
  17. It is sometimes hard for people to resume eating gluten for 2-4 weeks for the endoscopic biopsy, or 8-12 weeks for the blood tests, so we often tell people to get the testing done before going gluten-free - it gets trickier when your appointment is almost 2 months away. Have you had any tests done yet? If you can get all the tests run by your GP, it might...
  18. I was at my in-laws for Xmas dinner. It was a potluck, but my SIL is gluten-free to gluten-lite so I was not too worried about getting glutened, but something got me. About 15 minutes into the meal the stomach pain started and I ended up pretty bloated as the evening went on. It wasn't horrible but I'm out of practice for faking my way to the stomach pain...
  19. Welcome to the board. The new year is a good time to change your health. I hope 2015 is a good one for you.
  20. I would disagree with your doctor, pain is a very common celiac disease symptom from GI pain to migraines to arthritis.... I had all three. I do agree that there is nothing special to give a celiac for painbeyond a typical; pain killer, and there is nothing I know of to help clear our body of inflammation faster beyond clean eating and living. L-glutamine...
  21. Two positive tests almost always means celiac disease.... Actually, one positive test almost always means celiac disease. By all means, go ahead with the endoscopy but be aware that the endoscopy misses up to 1 in 5 celiacs so even if there is a negative result, she still has celiac disease based on the blood work. Symptoms are not to be relied upon...
  22. As far as I understand it, celiac disease is an autoimmune disease that causes damage to the intestines (and possibly skin) along with 300 other symptoms including GI distress. NCGS does not cause the intestinal damage or dh, and it is not an autoimmune disease so you would not be at increased risk or other autoimmune diseases. NCGS has all the same symptoms...
  23. In my experience, when we think something is up with our kids, we're usually right. We may not be right about the cause but we know when something is up. Good luck with the tests.
  24. That's not entirely true. Only 97% of celiacs have the DQ8 or DQ2 genes. 3% of celiacs do not have those genes, so while it is true that it is highly unlikely that she would have celiac disease without the genes, it is still very possible.... Look at it this way, she had a <1% of having celiac disease, but if she has celiac disease she has a 3% chance...
