  1. As well as having coeliac disease I have IBS, I managed the condition quite well until I had to stop eating gluten when diagnosed with Coeliacs. Now I am having stomach cramps etc due to not getting enough fibre in my diet. How do people manage to find sufficient fibre for the diet when most of it is found in wheat based foods?
  2. I've had my thyroid medication reduced twice since becoming gluten free. I didn't realise so many other people did too!
  3. I get the same symptoms when I eat dairy or gluten (obviously eaten in error not deliberately). So it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly what it is, unless you keep a food diary. I get severe stomach cramps, bloating etc. with both. Although usually, I don't get a migraine when I've eaten dairy, but I do with gluten. That's about the only difference I can...
  4. Thanks. Yes I will speak to consultant before my next one. I'm so annoyed with myself, as I'm so careful at home. I was taken by surprise as I don't normally have hair spray on, but I changed my hairstyle and she must have thought it needed a bit of extra hold.
  5. Hi Julissa I will definitely be avoiding the hairspray in future. What a good idea, going in very early to avoid the hairsprays etc. I must remember that. Thanks.
  6. Some of the hairsprays I had at home contained wheat based conditioners in them, so I am guessing that they would have similar ones used in the hair salon and there were definitely plant based (including wheat) in the eye drops as I checked it out. I am just worried that the little mishaps (none of which were on my control) would effect my next biopsy. ...
  7. Went to my hairdressers today and when my hair was done, my stylist sprayed it fairly liberally with hairspray (lacquer). As she doesn't normally use much I wasn't prepared and accidentally breathed in quite a bit through my mouth. Within half an hour I had really bad griping pains in my stomach which I still have this evening. I'm suspecting there was wheat...
  8. Could it be lack of fiber in your diet? When I was diagnosed with IBS over 30 years ago, I was told stress was a big factor in IBS but fiber helped put it right. I had severe symptoms (I have IBS and coeliac disease) since bcoming coeliac, I have found it really difficult to get enough fibre in my diet. Years ago I was told I needed to consume 30 grams of...
  9. Thanks Jebby. I have started taking a probiotic too. It's so difficult wading through everything to check for gluten and then deciding how in the world you are also going to get sufficient fibre intake without wheat or gluten. You are right about the food intolerances. Although I started with those long before I was diagnosed with coeliac disease, and I now...
  10. You had your test done whilst being gluten free?
  11. Thanks. I've Re-started my food diary, but I'm now thinking I need more fibre in my diet, as I have found it more difficult to get enough fibre now I can't eat wheat/gluten. I have read there's a few people having problems with food intolerances since being diagnosed coeliac.
  12. Hi again. I can't tolerate alcohol in any form, I don!t know whether this is because of coeliac disease or not as I developed an intolerance to it about 10 years ago, even a thimble full of alcohol will give me a severe migraine headache, where I can't actually see properly. Also, I don't think you are allowed alcohol while taking Amitriptyline. (There's a...
  13. I'm very surprised that it says it's suitable if it contains barley. If you look in the front of the directory it tells you that you must not eat it. I certainly wouldn't be prepared to risk it. I don't think the website is manned as often as other websites. I sent them an email about something and they didn't get back to me and I'm a full member ...
  14. Hi! Coeliac Uk is definitely good for some things. I like this forum though, as there always seems to be someone that knows something extra and usually there's someone around to reply to your questions.
  15. By the way folks, membership for Coeliac UK is only free for the first six months and you need to have been diagnosed with Coeliacs disease in order to be a member. After that you need to pay per year. I think it's worth it though as you get to access other areas of the website that non-members can't, you also get up-to-date lists of gluten free foods in...
  16. Hi VeggieGal, Yes, I'm a member of Coeliac UK too. I joined approx. 2 years ago. I wondered why they don't have a forum like on here. It seems odd for them not to have one, perhaps we should suggest it(?) You are right about barley not being suitable for Coeliacs. Is it just their own 'regular' cornflakes? Or is it in the 'free from' isle? I only...
  17. I agree with you totally Heart, regarding the Tramadol and Amitriptyline as I too have taken both - and still do take Amitriptyline as the facet joints in my spine are degenerating causing sciatica. I was told not to come off them suddenly and had to carefully come off them gradually reducing the dose. Tramadol I took myself off 'cold turkey' not realising...
  18. Wow! There's a lot to get my head round in this post. Sorry you have had such a difficult time. I sympathise with you as I had a raw deal which lasted over 2 years in pursuing a diagnosis, and I had to start eating gluten again to get a proper diagnosis, and it wasn't pleasant. It does sound like wheat/gluten is the problem, I suffered with severe acid reflux...
  19. I agree with Olly's mum, I would ask them to wipe the conveyor belt too. If you have already put part of your shopping on when you notice the flour mess, you could put the magnetic strip down which separates the shopping from you and the next customer - as long as you tell the person behind you not to put their shopping on until you're done. Instead of washing...
  20. I was diagnosed with coeliac disease in November 2011 having had various biopsies etc. I was diagnosed with IBS 30 years ago (approx). I was severely ill prior to being diagnosed with Coeliacs disease. (Long story short, severe anaemia, malnutrition could barely stand without a stick never mind walk down the garden). I also have under-active Thyroid, diabetes...
  21. Let me know how you get on with them
  22. When were you diagnosed? I have been gluten free for 16 months and just when I started to feel better I was glutened by something given to me at the hospital. When I need some extra help to settle things down again I take gluten-free/wheat & dairy free slippery elm capsules after each meal. They seem to soothe my stomach.
  23. I must be very sensitive as I notice even a small amount if gluten almost straight away, and the effects last for ages before I feel better.
  24. Many thanks for replying. I had already tried the sites you had spotted and drew a blank with the NHS one, mainly because it appears that the information is sourced from a third party and not NHS themselves. I had also seen the information you had spotted on wikipedia, like you, I am always sceptical about the information on there as you don't necessarily...
  25. Yes it did. If you think about it, it makes sense. When you put eye drops in, they drain down through the nose, and things which drain through the nose end up in the stomach. That's why some people of here are worried about inhaling flour, wheat etc.
