  1. Hmmm, at my favorite Thai place, I've tried a peanut dish that was DEFINITELY spicy! At this particular place, all the dishes are made to order - mild, medium, hot, or thai hot (outrageously hot). I love spicy stuff, so I order it thai hot, but I think they can make any dish to your particular taste. I would just recommend stressing that you do NOT want a...
  2. I go to the TJs on 23rd and Market and the Whole Foods on 21st and Callowhill. Sometimes I'll trek down to the Dietary Shoppe on Ridge Ave, because they have Don Pancho wraps and Gillians rolls. Oh, and of course there is Mr. Ritts at 7th (I think?) and Passyunk. I've gotten my birthday cake from them for the past 2 years. I guess that is a good selection...
  3. I love love love their cinnamon rolls. Cinnabun shminabun! Their pizza is also good, as are the cookies and the ravioli. They were nice when I dealt with them, but on my order this past Christmas, the order definitely was late (didn't make it in time for Christmas, as they had promised). I think that maybe with all of the news of how GOOD their food...
  4. Oooh oooh, what are the places you found to shop?? Do share! I've always wanted to go to one of the Philly support meetings, but they always conflict with my schedule. Maybe one day! - Lauren
  5. Oh my goodness, that was certainly me, pre-diagnosis! I was absolutely ravenous (for bread and pasta, of all things). I think that it was really ironic that I craved what was, more or less, poisonous to me. This type of eating culminated in a severe bout of pancreatitis, and then a Celiac diagnosis. On the subject of relatives in denial - I totally sympathize...
  6. How fun! Great way to get to know everyone a little better - sometimes I think we get so caught up in letting Celiac disease be our "identity," but I really enjoyed reading what everyone wrote! Anyway.... 1. FIRST NAME? Lauren 2. WERE YOU NAMED AFTER ANYONE? my father's name is Michael Lawrence, my name is Lauren Michelle - the feminine inverse...
  7. thenamesbabe, Did you read the list of gluten-free Lays products that someone posted in this thread? The only baked Doritos that are gluten-free are the Cool Ranch kind. Is that the kind you have? The nacho cheese flavor is not gluten-free in any variety except "light" or whatever the kind is that is really bad for your stomach and causes "anal leakage...
  8. REGULAR (cheddar cheese or whatever) flavored Doritos have gluten - whether they're baked or not. BUT the other flavors - Cool Ranch, Black Pepper, etc. are gluten-free - Lauren
  9. Yes. I worship the stuff. Mmmmmmm - Lauren
  10. People just LOVE that stuff. I'm a vegetarian (haha, I know, ironic that a vegetarian works at a steakhouse), but I've been almost tempted to try the Alice Springs, just b/c everyone raves about it! Haha, yeah I was back in the kitchen one time, and I saw this tray full of what looked to me like "dirty" butter balls (haha). So I said...
  11. Yes, you can have plain butter with your baked potato! With the veggies - they premake little "butter balls" that have seasoning in them, and cook the veggies (individual orders) in the butter. However, you CAN order the veggies without the butter/seasoning balls. You could even order them with PLAIN butter. I just order them without any butter or seasoning...
  12. My Outback never carried that meal (the chicken w/corn cakes) to begin with, so maybe that's why I haven't heard anything "new" on the gluten-free front. For the person who said their veggies sometimes get the butter anyway - definitely send them back. Outback is VERY customer oriented (the whole "no rules just right" thing) and really aims to please....
  13. Yep, I work at Outback. And I have heard no such thing. They are definitely not discontinuing the gluten-free menu, but perhaps they are revising it. I know that our regular menu is also undergoing some revisions - discontinuing some items, adding others. I'll specifically ask my kitchen manager and let you all know! He knows I have Celiac so if Outback...
  14. No worries at all, and don't feel badly about it. I tend to be hyper-sensitive It's hard not to be afraid of food, when for us, in some forms it truly is poison! - Lauren
  15. Ooops, I meant to quote beaglemania's post in mine as well. And thank YOU Patti - Lauren
  16. Whoa, sorry, but I have to say something. First - eating disorders ARE diseases. Just because some people don't understand them does not make them any less real. Also, I don't think that calling the disease a freak of nature is really appropriate. I don't know the exact statistics, but eating disorders/disordered eating are much more common than most people...
  17. I work at a restaurant and while I don't actually cook/bake, I'm constantly handling gluten-filled products. I just make sure to thoroughly wash my hands and not touch my mouth or face while at work. I always shower when I get home, as well (more b/c I come home smelling like a Bloomin' Onion - I work at Outback haha!) I have no problems. I think that...
  18. Thanks so much, you guys are the best. I know that it could definitely be worse, and I immediately felt guilty posting my complaints about health issues. I actually feel pretty good right now, but it seems like maybe I can't even trust how I "feel" anymore - if the doctors are still saying that I still have various medical issues. Like I said, I hate...
  19. First of all, I know that many of you are FAR more restricted than I in what you can and cannot eat. However, my health has just really been frustrating me lately. I don't like to complain to my friends and family, b/c I don't like to worry them. So I guess just let me rant away here and let me know if anyone feels the same. I'm 24 years old. My doctor...

    ARCHIVED Babycakes...

Stefi! I was wondering where you were! We missed you, good to see you back here - Lauren
  21. Kendra, I have hyperglycemia and need to watch my blood sugar as well. My local grocery store has Vermont brand (Maple Grove Farms of Vermont) sugar free maple syrup that is marked gluten-free right on the bottle (on the back, under igredients). I think it tastes very good, I'm a big maple lover. Hope you can find it - Lauren
  22. I heard about the gluten-free Starbucks treat (didn't know it was a cookie) but heard that it was placed in the case with the other food items. Maybe you could ask for one right out of the package, but I haven't found anything gluten-free at any Starbucks around me. I'm not a fan of the coffee, either. - Lauren
  23. I posted this a couple days ago, so sorry for repeating but maybe it was missed. I'm in love with Gillian's rolls, and was really happy to find them at Trader Joe's! They are TJ's brand, but they are definitely Gillian's rolls (TJ's does this). Much cheaper! $3.50 or something - what a bargain! I eat Gillian's rolls with just about anything. They make...
  24. I read it the same way as you, Michael. Sounds super easy and yummy - like a cobbler of sorts. I'll definitely have to try it sometime, thanks for sharing! - Lauren
  25. I'm sorry that I don't have much to share, besides that I once looked at PurFoods and Grandma Ferndons when I was quite sick for the convenience factor (had no energy to cook, plus I didn't really know HOW to cook!) Unfortunately, PurFoods just proved to be too expensive for this poor grad student. A wonderful concept, though, and their meals sound delicious...
