ARCHIVED Ice Cream Truck
amybeth replied to stephanielaw's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I overheard on a radio show, once, a discussion about "harmless things our parents did that were slightly deceptive....." One woman said she was told that when the ice cream truck was playing the music it was to let you know that they were out of icecream!!! It's funny in a make you feel bad for laughing kind of way. -
ARCHIVED Campbells Soup?
amybeth replied to rachellek's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Healthy Choice has a chicken and rice that is safe and yummy. I steer clear of Campbells --- In fact when my internist first suspected celiacs, the first thing she said to me was "You will have to avoid canned soups"....struck me as odd at the time - but very very true. -
ARCHIVED Aveda Cosmetics And Hair Care
amybeth posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The salon I'd like to hire for my wedding hair/make up only uses AVEDA products. I have a list of AVEDA products that CONTAIN gluten, which is extensive, but there is no indication of how many "safe" products remain....Want to be sure I'll have options. Does/has anyone use(d) AVEDA since going gluten-free? I'm mostly concerned about the cosmetics. I can... -

ARCHIVED Uncle Ben's Ready Rice
amybeth replied to purplemom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There are different varieties in the 90 second pouches - some flavored some plain. I have had a couple of them and experienced slight reactions to the brown rice. For me, the plain white rice in the 90 second pouch was fine. -
Lisa - you're dead on! My fiance' works in a fine-dining restaurant - and when he's not eating taco bell, he likes to go out for nice meals -- kind of wants to be served after serving others all day...... and I always feel bad that our meals are full of so many questions and clarifications! He's so patient and understanding (I'm truly blessed...

ARCHIVED Amoxicillin? Help
amybeth posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Woke up w/ killer sore throat - feels like strep. Go to Dr. He decides to put me on antibiotics b/c over the holiday weekend culture results would take too long. He prescribes Amoxicillin -- when he asks about prescription allergies, I explained that I have celiac disease and would need a script that does not contain gluten as a binding agent. ... -
I know that the thyroid and weight link up. My TSH levels have always been "just barely" considered normal (on the high end). I'm about due for bloodwork to check it again, but since going gluten-free I have noticed a steady increase in my weight, although the way I eat, snack, etc. has not changed in other ways - and more recently a strange feeling...

ARCHIVED Complicated Fertility Issues-but Could I Be Pregnant?
amybeth replied to beelzebubble's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My sister got a negative at the doctors and a positive at home a week later - and she was diagnosed with pcos years ago........ My niece is 6 mo. old now!! Might be too early for the test to tell...... Her (almost instant) smell aversion was to her beloved morning cup of coffee. -
Yesterday......digging through my purse so I could find my keys to let myself in the house......digging more....taking things out........finally decide they're in my bf's car, so I turn to go back, all annoyed with myself, so I turn in a "huffy" way, and hear the lovely jingle of my keychain dangling off of my pinky. He realized they were there a few seconds...

ARCHIVED Trying To Quit Smoking
amybeth replied to Lister's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Cold turkey. It was miserable - and I ate a lot to compensate, but it was worth it. Occasionally, I'll still catch a sniff of passing smoke and crave it. -
ARCHIVED Please Recommend "gluten Free Bread"?
amybeth replied to betsyboo01's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Just tried kinnikinnick (however you spell it) white sandwich bread. YUM! Couldn't wait to try it, and was at my mom's without gluten-free toaster.......broiled it with cheese in oven - terrific. Went home and had another piece with PB. I like Chebe, too, but only for stromboli -- when it's plain with no "stuffings" I can't take the aftertaste. -
ARCHIVED How Can Eating In Restaurants Not Get You Sick?
amybeth replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I tend to do salads, if I'm in a jam, sorry. Eat out a lot at Mexican and Thai to increase my chances of finding something. (Be careful that chips aren't fried with the flour tortillas -- this question always throws them. ) Rely a lot on red meat when out, b/c it tends to be "easier" than other dishes. Sometimes grilled veggies, baked potato,... -
ARCHIVED How Can Eating In Restaurants Not Get You Sick?
amybeth replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I tend to avoid chicken in restaurants - unless it's specifically on a gluten-free menu. If I'm really craving it, I'll ask them about the injections. If they look at my like I have 10 heads, I choose something else. (This is usually the case). I'd just rather not risk it, and I try to "stock up" on chicken meals at home, so I don't crave it when I'm... -

ARCHIVED Llicking Envelopes?
amybeth replied to ebrbetty's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't lick 'em and I don't lick stamps either. Actually had to ask a stranger in the post office the other day to post my stamps, so I could mail! He actually asked if I was avoiding gluten, because he had read that they use flour in the adhesive! I was so surprised he knew! In a total pinch with no strangers in the post office, I lick a finger to... -

ARCHIVED Diarrea---not Fun..
amybeth replied to gabrielle's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Might be stress or other allergens - might even be a bug that you're trying to fight off....whenever my stomach was upset, my mom put me on the "BRAT" diet......really bland, to help your tummy settle --- B = Bananas; R = Rice (plain); A = Applesauce; T = Toast (plain) I think it's supposed to go in that order, too. Try bananas, then rice, etc. Good... -
ARCHIVED Simple Organic Pudding & Pie Filling (issue?)
amybeth replied to Fionnghuala's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
From what I understand, caramel color may or may not contain gluten. It's best to contact the manufacturer of the item ahead of time. -
ARCHIVED Lays Stax
amybeth replied to Lister's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Me, too ---- seems to be random issues with Stax....I have no other allergens except gluten Plain baked lays, though, are always ok for me. -
If one is near you, Wegman's has a sweet and sour sauce that's clearly labeled gluten-free and tastes just like Sweet and Sour that you get at a chinese place.......I had it the other night over rice with Ian's nuggets -- super quick, easy, and yummy. Next time I'm going to add veggies. It's in a black bottle in the ethnic food section.

Great news! The Bucks County Courier Times (in PA) followed up the article from Sunday ("The Disease of a Thousand Disguises") with 2 pages in today's food section dedicated to the gluten-free lifestyle!!! Included a recipe for quesadillas - a few "challenges" of eating out and staying gluten-free - the ingredients to avoid -a few suggested items...
