ARCHIVED Not Dh, But What Is This? (With Picture)
ButterflyChaser posted a topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
After weeks of being very careful I left down my guard and accidentally ingested wheat - I swelled immediately (5 lbs in weight, most of which disappeared after 30 hours), and my upper thighs are once again covered in small red spots (both legs), extremely itchy at first. They have been there for almost a week even if they don't really itch that much anymore... -
ARCHIVED Going gluten-free Made Grave's Disease Worse?
ButterflyChaser replied to Owlmuse's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Thank you VeggieGal, I'll look into RT3 (I am now in Italy for a few weeks, but I wish I lived in Britain LOL!) . I saw a couple of my docs yesterday, who think that my weight gain is probably edema due to a loss of proteins, caused by my chronic D (been pretty bad for a couple of years, getting increasingly worse, made a semi-invalid this summer, and getting... -
ARCHIVED Has Anyone Had Success With Dr. Kharrazian's Methods/testing?
ButterflyChaser replied to Zibby's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'd really like to hear others' opinion on Dr. K, too, and on his book. I can't seem to find infos for his MD degree, though... -
ARCHIVED Chocolate For The Dairy Free And Or Soy Free
ButterflyChaser replied to GFreeMO's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think Gnosis chocolate is both dairy and soy free. Theo doesn't use soy, but they are not gluten-free certified nor Df certified because they certainly use those in certain bars. To my delight, now that I am in Italy, I have discovered that most mainstream chocolate brands, like Perugina, are gluten-free and soy-free (they use sunflower lechitin). This... -
ARCHIVED Going gluten-free Made Grave's Disease Worse?
ButterflyChaser replied to Owlmuse's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi all, I have been gluten-free since October 2012 and have been hyper since July - just got my tests back, and while my TSH has risen a bit (0.06, the highest it has ever been, it was 0.01 last October), and my FT3 is 21.37 (max should be 6) and my FT4 is 35.49 (max should be 15.50). Never been this high. It's really weird, however, as I don't have... -
Hi Kiki, soy lechitin gives me heart problems (extrasystoles). I also avoid it because of my thyroid disorders, and I am currently making my own pretty much anything. Have you tried looking up recipes to make your own salad dressings et cetera? I never use dressings, but I am pretty sure it can't be impossible to make?

ARCHIVED Post Card / Christmas Card Exchange
ButterflyChaser replied to GFinDC's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
GFinDC I received your card - it is beautiful! Did you make that?!?!? -
Celiac Mindwarp, my favourite crazy class in college was my romance philology course. 10 hours of classes per week. Not kidding - part of it was learning, well, philology, part of it was figuring out languedoc and other essentially dead languages, and part of it was literature. This last part, 6 hrs per week, was on Medieval comic literature - just about...

I have 50 pages of research punning the word "hang" in every possible way except the obvious obscene ones. Now, that was a feat. I am the same way with notes. I think it is a form of body memory. Not a neuroscientist really, but I think it has to do with the way in which you have to process sound into writing/visuals via your body movement.

It's a girl thing, too. The good news is that you can make it to grad school even if you can't sit down still. I mean, I did still nicely in class, but I pace when I read/think, and "chair dance" when I am writing/dancing to the perplexity of my colleagues. Not for nothing, I am writing a diss on the physiology of body movement in reading/writing techniques

ARCHIVED Are There Any Gluten Free Resorts Anywhere In The World?
ButterflyChaser replied to javic's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Open Original Shared Link Never been there, but by googling "resort celiachia glutine" a bunch came up. This place calls itself "a resort for celiacs" but I can't vouch personally because I never visited. I think in Italy it is also a bit easier to be gluten-free because of the style of cooking, and you are less likely to find gluten-containing ingredients... -
Hugs shadowicewolf. Try not to think about school for a while. Your hands any better? Could it be an allergic reaction or something? A friend of mine had a t-shirt made for me. It has my motto "my body is trying to kill me" written right on my bum. So next time I go running I will be a living ad for autoimmune disease awareness!

The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
ButterflyChaser replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Oh, gee, now I have to look for sumac... Except that I have filled my spice counter, and it's either another jar of spices, or my roommate, and spices don't pay rent, so... Does anyone here know where I can find piri piri in the US? I have been searching high and low, with no success. It also took me a while to find tandoori spices Dinner is grapefruit... -
ARCHIVED Help Me Figure Out A Christmas Dessert!
ButterflyChaser replied to Kelleybean's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Yes. Whoever came up with that name lacks a basic understanding of the term "insulin spike." -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Diet Or Gluten Free Lifestyle?
ButterflyChaser replied to captaincrab55's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
All of the above. Also: endless discussion on a distinction without a difference. I am going to adapt a version of this thread next semester when I teach my classes on humane food policies. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free, Don't Really Like Meat.... Hashi's Sufferer And Need To Lose Weight
ButterflyChaser replied to HashisGirl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Being vegetarian, while possible, would not be recommended for us; many vegetarians rely heavily on soy, which is known to mess up with thyroid hormones. There is also a bunch of other things that thyroid patients should avoid. In my case, I did the elimination diet for all of those, and I found out that in my case they do affect me a lot (confirmed by symptoms... -
The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat

I had a mixed greens salad with butternut cubes, caramelized apple slices, cranberries, walnuts, goat cheese, and sliced chicken. Dessert was chocolate and a marron glace. -
ARCHIVED Bathroom Question (Maybe Tmi)
ButterflyChaser replied to rami's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have just realized that Italians say "X floats like a poop" - X usually being a disagreeable person who always gets away with it. Like, of *course* poop floats. Do you think that this saying is indicative of the incidence of celiac disease in the country? -
ARCHIVED Home For The Holidays - Do I Need Separate Pots And Pans?
ButterflyChaser replied to ButterflyChaser's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Wow, thanks! I'll mention this to my mum: I am sure that we have lots of spare pans from my grandmothers' inheritance. It is true, Adelaide, I have an amazing family. I wub them very much. Think that when I found out I had thyroid disorders one of my brothers called me to say "you shouldn't eat yuca anymore" (my SIL is from Ecuador, so we make yuca sometimes... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Diet Or Gluten Free Lifestyle?
ButterflyChaser replied to captaincrab55's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Cabana boys... ladyfingers... mmm... And then people ask me what I like in this forum. BUT! I have put my Barnardo's thinking hat, and pulled out my Latin dictionary and my philological training: DIET (via Old French) < Latin diæta (in medieval Latin diēta), < Greek δίαιτα ‘mode of life’ The old dead folks are laugh... -

I love those, and the ginger snapz, too! They are tiny and crunchy, just like I prefer them. Unfortunately, cookies are a bit off limts of me at the moment...
