  3. I go through that crap every day at school. She was a woman who didn't realize your condition. It might help if you told her what would happen, and if you ate wheat every day for a long time, you will develop cancer. It might be best to keep doing what your doing, or what i do is eat before i go to a birthday party or whatever. This way you wont have to worry about getting gluten, and won't have to explain anything to anybody. If they do ask, just say no thank you i'm not hungry. The only downside to this situation for me, is that some people think i'm anorexic (and im a thirteen year old boy!) because i try not to make a big deal about celiac. If that lady person was mean to you, she might not been rude, she just might not of understood your condition. Try not to hold to big of a grudge.

    Will :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P

It does get easier and after a while, it will be second nature. You just do what you need to do and often, don't give things a second thought.

I know that sometimes that people can be difficult, but it sounds like you have a great attitude Will!

  4. Hi and good day

I was wondering if there is a list somewhere here that I can print out as to what foods stc are gluten-free and what ones to stay away from I am doing so much research the last few dyas and boy things I thought I was doing ok with have gluten in them....ie rice dreams rice milk heck who would have thought, mrs dash some flav etc no wonder every time i think i am doing so great I keep feeling yucky :o

    Welcome!

There are some annually updated lists available at the Gluten Free Mall, which can be found at the header of this page. These lists do have a short "shelf life" due to the fact that ingredients change quite frequently and thus the potential gluten free status can be jeopardized.

You can stroll around the Product Section here and get some resent product information.

Here is a good listing of companies who will CLEARLY list gluten in all forms (as in wheat, barley, rye and malt), with nothing hidden in natural flavors and such...

Hope this helps. BTW, as last I checked all of Mrs. Dash's are gluten free and McCormicks will clearly list.

  5. Ugh... They can't tell me if I'm celiac or not?? That STINKS!!!!

So the only way is thru the biopsy?? .. which I refuse to do...

Hi Rachel and Momma Goose!!!!!! :)

Biopsys are not always acccurate as are the blood tests. The only true test is a positive dietary response.

If you have been gluten free for a while and then slowly added gluten, it might take a while for symptoms to surface. Sort of like a car slowly rolling down a hill, no damage until one day the car goes over the cliff.

Wish I could offer an answer.

  6. Hey gang! It's been quite awhile since I've been here. I never REALLY had a definitive test for celiac disease... I don't think.

I dont know if I'm a true celiac or gluten intolerant. I have been less than careful about my diet when eating out, etc.

I think I'm suffering from celiac symptoms again. I don't get deathly ill from ingesting gluten... it's more subtle.

I've been having trouble with what was thought to have been a stone in my bile duct and I just found out there is no longer one there.

I've been having dizziness, fatigue, and stomach pains [stomach, not intestines]. I lost about 25 lbs over the past 6 months.

So... if i get tested thru Enterolab, is there any chance it will be covered by insurance?? I need to find out if I'm a true celiac or not.

    Welcome back!

I am sorry that you are having problems again.

I don't think that I recall members mentioning that Enterolabs is covered by insurance. They do not diagnose, but they can tell you if are sensitive to gluten and other things, but you already know that.

  7. Did you have to specifically request Quest or was that the lab your doctor already used? I'm probably putting too much thought in to this.

    Sal

At the point of my blood work, I had been two months gluten free with a diagnosis of Celiac from a GI. Unhappy with my PCP, I choose to see another doctor. He in turn ordered "tests", which I later found was for Celiac at a cost of $1500, because he was Hospital affiliated and they got their cut.

I no longer give doctors free range to run test on me and I have returned to my original and long tern PCP.

I don't think it's as important as to who does the the testing as long as the correct tests are done.

  8. I have read on several Celiac disease websites that a "reliable" laboratory such as Prometheus, Mayo or Quest should be used for celiac panels. How much of this do you think is really the need for a specific laboratory versus an advertising plug from one corporation to another? I want the best. And I want other's opinions.

    Sal

I am sure that there is a margin of error in every element of testing. My testing is through Quest. As you might know, here are the tests to be ordered:

Anti-gliadin antibodies (AGA) both IgA and IgG

    Anti-endomysial antibodies (EMA) - IgA

Anti-tissue transglutaminase antibodies (tTG) - IgA

    Total IgA level.

  9. How long has he been off of wheat or the other allergens that you mentioned. I could be that he has healed and is not OUTWARDLY showing symptoms. Should he have Celiac, he is having internal damage. Celiac is an autoimmune disease. It's not the amount of gluten that he may consume, but rather, the autoimune reaction to the smallest amount of gluten that will do the damage, which may be evident down the road with diareaha.

If he does have Celiac, it might take repeted attempts for a reaction such as diarrhea.

I would encourage you to have him tested specifically for Celiac Disease. (Although the blood test is not as reliable for children under the age of five).

Here is what you doctor should order: (all of these)

Anti-gliadin antibodies (AGA) both IgA and IgG

    Anti-endomysial antibodies (EMA) - IgA

Anti-tissue transglutaminase antibodies (tTG) - IgA

    Total IgA level.

Secondly, there are no stupid questions here and welcome!

  10. I am new to this whole celiac and gluten free diet. Just found out I have celiac disease and have been trying to eat gluten free for the past six weeks. I have done pretty good up until now. Some say maltodextrin is safe others no. I ate Bovril, and English sort of spread on my gluten free bread at lunch and by dinner I had so much gas I could not eat very much. It took my hours before I felt better. My son who also has celiac disease, ate the same dinner as me and he was fine, so I'm thinking it was the Bovril. I hope someone can help answer the question about maltodextrin or Bovril for me. Thanks Diann

In the US, maltodextrin is derived from corn unless otherwise stated. I am not certain regarding English products. I would contact the company and inquire as to their gluten free status.

  11. I was quite surprised with that list...no one in CENTRAL NC...not a 919 area code in the bunch!

I haven't found a local support group in the Triangle yet...but I haven't look really hard for lack of time. Well, I actually did find something about one online, but it appeared inactive...no events for quite a long time.

    Have your tried these folks?:
