  1. Can anyone advise if they have tried the product by NOW called Gluten Digest? It claims you can eat gluten and this will break it down for you due to the enzymes in it. I read some of the latest reseach on a similiar product that has not been tried on humans yet. Thanks in advance for any input.

I am sorry that I recently threw out a magazine with their ad in it.

To paraphrase...Gluten Digest is not designed for those with Celiac Disease, but rather those who have difficulty digesting gluten. It also states in the fine print that has not been given the OK from the FDA. And most alarming for me, they have done their own testing "inhouse".

Not a product for me. <_<

Edit - Here is the link to the product: Open Original Shared Link

  2. No, I have had no gluten issues nor is there anything on the ingredients listing to indicate do.

I just called and their office closes at 4:00. I will try their website at www.hersheys.com

I strongly feel that the information given regarding natural flavors is from an uneducated/uninformed employee.

BTW, are we talking US here?

Can you send me an allergen list?

We have found that allergen lists quickly become outdated as our product lines change over time. Rather than have you make purchase decisions based on outdated information, we encourage you to check the ingredient label on the package. This label provides accurate, current information about all the ingredients in the package.

That is enough of an answer for me and I shall continue to indulge.

  3. Maggie, the blood panel is not 100% accurate, but the other support tests that you doctor ordered may indicate that something is "cooking".

If you can handle gluten another week, try to tough it out until your results return. Your doctor may want further celiac testing (endoscopy/biopsy) or the result may lead you in another direction.

Either way, spend some time here learning all you can and feel free to ask any questions you may have.

  4. Hello Everyone

My 2 year old daughter has just been diagnosed with celiac and i have been trying to adjust to the all the food changes but now i am starting to wonder if there are products (other then food) that she shouldnt be using. For example......Toothpaste, shampoo, soap, lotions and Diapers, medicine and so on....

Any help would be greatly appreicated

Products change their ingredients frequently, but here is a list of companies who will clearly list all forms of gluten (as in wheat, barley, rye and malt):

Toiletries are much harder because those product are not required to list gluten.

Here is a current listing of meds that are gluten free:

It is always good to call the companies and verify their gluten free status.

  5. Ok, I need someone to confirm this for me. I just went to the Burger King website and it lists their fries as gluten free. Is this true? Because if it is, I'm running out to go buy some. Please tell me it's true! :P

Just make sure that they have dedicated fryers. And know that any fast food place is high risk for cross contamination.

  6. Hi. I am new to this site and just learning about Celiac. I have never been diagnosed but after learning more about it, it sounds more and more like what I have. I am scheduled to see my doctor next week and want to be prepared with what I need to request in terms of testing so that I can hopefully find out what is wrong with me.

I have a history of digestive problems for the past 10 years. I have seen tons of doctors, had ultrasounds for my gallbladder because from time to time I experience pain in my abdomen, kind of high up under my ribs, to the right side. The scans always come back fine. I've been put on Protonix several times and nothing seems to really make the problem go away. I am definitely lactose intolerant and that issue seems to have gotten worse within the past couple of years. Since last Spring I've been experiencing problems every time I eat. I get bloated and have a hard time digesting my food. I get a very gassy tummy to the point of it being painful and then diarreah. (This is when I am eating non-dairy food). I am also experiencing extremely itchy skin (no rash) but VERY itchy, sometimes with small hives. I have also recently developed food allergies and have to carry and epi pen with me at all times. I can no longer eat fish, certain types of nuts and some fruits. Also noticed that after eating certain cereals or wheat crackers it made me feel very ill with lots of tummy issues. I'm tired of not feeling good :-(

Please reply if you have experienced similar problems or have any advice. I'm afraid my doctor will not be so willing to test me unless I have more information or am more prepared on what to ask.

    Thanks!

    Hello Maggie and welcome!

Here are the test that you doctor will need to request:

Anti-gliadin antibodies (AGA) both IgA and IgG

    Anti-endomysial antibodies (EMA) - IgA

Anti-tissue transglutaminase antibodies (tTG) - IgA

    Total IgA level.

As you may know, Celiac is not all that rare as thought several years ago. One in every 133 people have Celiac and many more go undiagnosed.

The site index here if full of information that you can present to your doctor. Remember that you are the paying customer and if you would like these test run, ask/demand that it be done.

    Hope this is helpful.

  7. I did not vote because I am only familiar with the CSA Product List.

When I was first diagnosed, I went into the panic mode. I did order the CSA Product listing and was pleased at the time. It is geared to west coast and midlands grocery stores that we do not have available here. If you have a Traders Joe's in your area, yes, it will be helpful. I live in a town of 6,000. :(

It does have a limited lifetime. Products do change their ingredients and they require constant updates to guarantee their gluten free status.

I would suggest the Product Thread on this site. I kept a legal pad next to my computer and wrote down everything that could accompany my pantry. UNTIL you learn to read labels a recommended gluten free product or company contact information is great when your are learning the ropes.

It is very frustrating in the beginning, but I can assure you that it will become easier.

PS. Whole Foods has a very extensive gluten free product list that is available at their stores upon request.

  8. I was surprised when I found this out as well - just remember though, that the skin absorbs everything into your system, as do your eyes. I found out that my favorite eye make up remover had wheat in it and after stopping use, felt an immediate difference. Your nail beds are also extremely porous and will also carry the gluten into the bloodstream potentially causing a reaction.

Frustrating but true! Hang in there, and good luck!

    Hey Sandi,

I just wanted to add that the gluten molecules are too large to be absorbed through the skin into your system. Gluten must be ingested for Celiacs to be symptomatic. Now, that doesn't mean that those with a gluten allergy will not be effected topically with a reaction.

Meline, yes it is a very frustrating game. :(;)

  9. We went to Texas Roadhouse this weekend and they let us know that they no longer have "Gluten Free" items because they were sued for never really having Gluten Free items!! They told us they us MSG in EVERYTHING and the only options were steak without seasonings and a baked potato. After we ate we both got sick, Celiacs BEWARE!!!

Just to clarify, MSG is not gluten related. It might not be good for your, but it's not gluten.

  10. Hello All!

Wanted to know exactly what blood tests are suppose to be run to determine celiacs?

Also, are there blood test to determine vitamin and mineral deficiencies, and if so what should I ask to be run?

    Any help is appreciated!

    Amy

Your primary care physician can oder this test done and he can also order a full metabolic blood test that will test for deficiences.
