  1. really? ok thanks....curious if you personally say had a cup of gluten products what would you experience and how long would it take?

I have been gluten free for two and a half years and I consider myself in remission. If I did have a cup of gluten, I most likely would not react. Now, if I had a cup of gluten every day for a week, I suspect that I would have classic Celiac (no *s*) symtoms.

Gluten reactions are different in everyone.

If you feel you want to be tested, you must continue to eat gluten or may show a false negative. Here is the Celiac Blood Antibody Tests to request:

Anti-gliadin antibodies (AGA) both IgA and IgG

    Anti-endomysial antibodies (EMA) - IgA

Anti-tissue transglutaminase antibodies (tTG) - IgA

    Total IgA level.

  2. I looked at the protein powder and it says may contain products derived from wheat, soy and dairy...so there it is.

It is unclear about quaker oats, only says "100% rolled oats"

its been about 12 hours since having the powder, still bloated and feel like crap but pains and trips to the bathroom have ended

Quaker Oats are notorious for cross contamination.

  3. I realize this is an old post but it was never answered so I thought I would answer it. :)

  4. malt flavoring is okay for celiacs as long as it is derived from corn, which most u.s. companies do, but to be certain you should call the company or go online.

I think that you are confused between MALT and MALTODEXTRIN. Maltodextrin, which in the US is generally derived from corn. If it is not corn, it by law will be listed as "maltodextrin (wheat) on the ingredients disclosure or it will be listed in the allergen warning. It is not necessarily true for outside the US> :)

Malt is NOT gluten free. <_< Malt is barley derived.

  5. Stef:

I can so glad that you contacted us. There's power in numbers and we all have great collective resourses. I am sorry for all your troubles.

Here is a contact for the Celiac Disease Foundation www.celiac.org. At that organization you can contact deborah@celiac.org (Deborah Ceizler). Let her know that you are from Celiac.com and that I suggested you contact her. She can guide you to who you need to talk to.

Did you take Lukas out of the country? Is he with you?

Please keep in touch. Hugs to you.

  6. IS pregelatinzed starch SAFE?

    pregelatinized starch

From: A Dictionary of Food and Nutrition | Date: 2005 | Author: DAVID A. BENDER

    Print Digg del.icio.us

starch, pregelatinized Raw starch does not form a paste with cold water and therefore requires cooking if it is to be used as a food thickening agent. Pregelatinized starch, mostly from maize, has been cooked and dried. Used in instant puddings, pie fillings, soup mixes, salad dressings, sugar confectionery, and as a binder in meat products. Nutritional value is the same as that of the original starch. See also starch, modified.

  7. I am new here, and have a few questions. I have only been gluten-free for a week and a half and I have such tremendous relief! I am awaiting my blood work results. My Pc had mentioned a possible biopsy pending the results. I have recently had a endoscopy for GERD. Wouldnt Celiacs have been discovered then? MY pc said no, and that we need to check the colon. I havent seen anyone here mention the colon, so I am confused. I am sure my Pc knows what she is talking about. I think I will go ahead with the colonoscopy, if she thinks i need one. I had one about 3 yrs ago, but this was before all of my celiacs symptoms really got fired up.

Oh, and another question. I just stocked up on gluten-free foods from the local health food store and i had a mild reaction from the gluten-free english muffins i bought. Could it be something as simple as using the same toaster I use for my "normal" bread? It is hard to believe that a few crumbs can cause that much drama in such a short time. (I felt like a ate a bowling ball and woke up gassy)

Ok, thats all the questions i can think of for now. Im sure I will find more.

    Welcome,

An endoscopy exams MAY see some damage to the villi or scalloping of the intestines which would indication Celiac. Through the same proceedure biopsies can be taken to further test for Celiac in the small intestines.

A colonoscopy of the large intestines may look for other issues, not Celiac.

Cross contamination is a very real thing. When you do go totally gluten free, it is suggested that you get a dedicated toaster, wooded spoons, new cutting board and examine your scratched pots and pans. Gluten can hide anywhere. One crumb will not give you diarrhea, one crumb will set off the immune reaction which will give you the bloating and diarrhea.

There is lots to learn. :)

  8. Hello. My name is Audrey and I am new to the board. I recently suffered a 25 day bout of diarrhea...and my Doc suspects Celiac Disease.

I am scheduling the intital blood test(s). But I wanted to know if a biopsy is really necessary. I am nervous about the procedure, and also just having concerns about finding the time, etc. However, my health comes first, and I want to do the right thing here.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you.

    Welcome Audrey:

Your blood test can confirm Celiac, but they are not 100% reliable. Make sure that your doctor runs the full Celiac Blood Screening test. If you do have a positive blood test, there is no need for further diagnostic testing for Celiac. The endoscopy exam and biopsy can also confirm Celiac Disease and look for the extent of villi damage in the small intestines. The endoscopy exam can also look for other issues. The biopsy can be hit or miss and also is not 100%. It is not a difficult exam and there is nothing to worry about regarding the procedure.

It is very important, that while you await your blood screening that you remain on gluten. DO NOT GO GLUTEN FREE. It may effect your results.

    I hope this was helpful.

  9. For Amanda. See things could be worse.

When you have a "I Hate My Job" day, try this:

On your way home from work, stop at your pharmacy and go

to the thermometer section and purchase a rectal

    thermometer made by Johnson Johnson

Be very sure you get this brand. When you get home, lock

your doors, draw the curtains and disconnect the phone

so you will not be disturbed.

Change into very comfortable clothing and sit in your

favorite chair. Open the package and remove the

thermometer. Now, carefully place it on a table or a

surface so that it will not become chipped or broken.

Now the fun part begins. Take out the literature from

the box and read it carefully. You will notice that in

small print there is a statement:

"Every Rectal Thermometer made by Johnson & Johnson is

personally tested and then sanitized ".

Now, close your eyes and repeat out loud five times,"I

am so glad I do not work in the thermometer quality

control department at Johnson & Johnson."

HAVE A NICE DAY AND REMEMBER, THERE IS ALWAYS SOMEONE

ELSE WITH A JOB THAT IS MORE OF A PAIN IN THE ASS THAN

    YOURS!
