  1. Yes, you sound just like me.

I get very shaky to the point that I can barely type. Hair loss is very common and muscle atrophy are both symptoms of malnutrition. Make sure that you take a good multi-vitamin.

I have found the large does of B-12 seem to help with the shakes. Your body will take what it needs and dumps the rest. If you are not absorbing now, it might be helpful to take some B-12 injects for a while until you can successfully take them orally.

Believe me, you are in good company!

  2. Hey, don't forget about me.

I am in Edenton (about two hours east of Raleigh).

SouthernCeliacGirl, I am sorry that you did not feel welcome here or ignored. But that is not the first time that I have heard that. :( Try it again, perhaps it will be different. Tarheels are growing in numbers!

  3. Megan:

Welcome to the Board. I am sorry that you are feeling ill.

Many people here will not eat Quaker Rice Cakes due to cross-contamination and they have made many ill. Lumberg Rice Cakes are much better. Gluten can hide everywhere.

Yoplait Yogurt is gluten free (except the ones with cookies and crumbs)

The diet is very difficult in the beginning, but there really is a light at the end of the tunnel.

I am sure others will post, and I do hope you will feel better soon.

  4. Stefi:

I don't really live in DC, but I used to.

I am not familiar with the restaurant that you mentioned and it is not in the Gluten Free Dining Guide.

I would recommend that you get some dining cards that are in several languages. It has always been a big help to me.

I am sorry that I am not much help.

  5. Two years ago, I had never heard of Celiac Disease. I am now the recipient of this odd disease. I am in the on going process of healing my self. It is not an easy one to tackle and I still struggle.

To hear it in the main stream media, we should all jump for joy.

In a short two years, Heidi Collins of CNN has offered to be the voice for the Celiac Sprue Association, Elizabeth Hasselbeck has identified her illness as Celiac Disease.

What wonderful advances in a few short years.

Lets not pick this apart too much and relish in the words... "Celiac", in the media. Any media is a good thing at this point. Let's be grateful.

  6. Silly question, are best foods or kraft mayo's safe to eat? they do not list gluten or wheat but have soybean oil in them? I really don't care about the healthy aspect of fat right now just the taste. I use it all the time for my chicken salads/potato salads. thanks

Kraft Mayo will always list gluten.

Hellman's and Dukes are also gluten free. Hellman's is my choice of flavor.

    PS..now silly questions here! :)

  7. B:

You HAVE to go to Clyde's!!! They do not have a gluten free menu, but they are gluten free aware.

Clyde's is an old romantic spot for us. Sitting in the window at Clyde's and watching the snow fall....well that snow amounted to 36 inches and he was marooned with me for three days. Well, we made the best of the worst times and stilll married to him. It is in Georgetown at 3236 M Street, and very established and well known.

1769, 1226 36th Street is a high end restaurant and is also in the Triumph Dining Guide. Just below 1769 is a pub called "The Tombs"....... OMG, we used to skip school (high school) go into the city and eat pizza and drink 3/2 beer and return back to go to Mr. Barretts civic class. He never fussed as long as we brought him some pizza. Those were the days.

The Capital Grille, 601 Penn. Ave, (not in Georgetown, but a short cab ride to the Hill) , could be very interesting if you want to see who is who in DC. They DO have a gluten free menu.

I love that city. Enjoy your time there.

    PM me about your dates.

  8. I think that when recepies call for dredging it is because you may need some "crust" in order to make a gravey or sauce.

I have found that gluten-free flour does not thicken as regular flour will. When I need to, I use corn starch to thicked. When flour is needed, I use Bob's Red Mill flour mix. :)

I actually, see no need to dredge. A little olive oil or corn oil will brown without the flour.

Short ribs do sound wonderful. Sometimes, I throw them in a pot and make a barbeque sauce and slow cook.......yummmm

  9. Gillian's French Rolls are good. I split them and toast them, but they are the only thing I've found that creates what I remember as a good sandwich.

Corn thins are good - I like them better than ricecakes - with sandwich-y toppings on them.

I have to agree on Gillian's and their English Muffins are the closest to "real" bread.
