  1. Thanks for your replies.

Because I am sitting here with tears streaming down my face. And it's not about the bread. It's about the confusion. How did I get this? When did I get this? Why did I get this?

Does anyone remember having these feelings at first? Just this pure confusion and anger and hunger?

Has anyone traveled after diagnosis? How hard was it to walk by a bakery in Paris? Or refuse a souvlaki in Greece? Or a fresh loaf of bread at the corner bakery anywhere? I never even ate that much bread or wheat, to be honest, but the truth is.....if I want a piece of bread one day, I can't have it.

Does that seem at all ridiculous to anyone but me?

Honey, life is all about choices. In this case, you can opt for the diet or not. I don't think you have determined that gluten is your issue as of yet? Give it a go and see what happens and then take one step at a time. Please don't overwhelm yourself.

Most of us have been so miserably miserable, that an option of going gluten free was a relief. As well as quite the relief that it was a condition that a diet could control, without drugs or invasive testing.

It's not such a bad thing. :) And Europeans are far more advanced in gluten free dining than Americans. There is hope!

Grrrr ...sorry for the quote mess up.

  2. FOUR kids in College? Holy Moly. :o ...oh sorry I was distracted!

Go for the reality...Go totally gluten free. Give it a serious go for two months at the least.

It's really not all that difficult, although a few things might need to go. But quality alternatives are available. But let's not go here just yet.

Try a diet of meats, fish, fresh veggies, potatoes, rice and fresh fruits, this salt and pepper. Spring is coming and there will be many fresh options. Keep it simple.

If you see improvement in your symptoms, you may be on the right rack. :) And I expect that the emotions will ease once you stop putting poison in your body. My first response to gluten is agitation to any available person! <_< I have learned to fore-warn, but not everyone takes me seriously.

I know that I have not answered all of your answers, but perhaps a start. Others will contribute.

  3. Dear Txplowgirl,

I've always believed in the Benjamin Franklin approach.

Take a clean sheet of paper and write the titles of "Good" on one side and "Bad" on the other side. Then list what you like and love on one side, list all the bad things on the other side of the paper.

Weigh them. Once you get a real perspective on what is good and bad, you can make a legitimate decision, and stick with it. You'll have made a scientific decision? ;) Good luck, wish you all the best!

:) I like this approach! If that doesn't work, the elbow planting approach would be secondary with gusto! :P

  4. Thanks for joining up and letting us know the real story Beau Jo's. It is great to hear that restaraunts like yours are making a real effort to serve gluten-free people safely. If I lived in CO. I would be sure to stop in and eat there, if it was still open that is. Seems to me your establishment got a raw deal from this incident and it was nothing to do with your operation. More likely a disgruntled ex-employee is the cause.

I hope things work out well for your restaraunt business, in spite of the negative publicity generated by Mr. Cardone's FB posts.

Me too! If we can be of assistance....just ask.

  5. I've been gluten free since last June, and until recently the bloating was signifcantly improved. However, over the last few months I've been having more digestive issues, and I'm feeling constantly bloated. During this time I've been trying to eat a lot more veges in an effort to lose weight. However, I'm a lazy cook and not terribly fond of veges, and "eating veges" means "adding stir fried onion to dinner" (I include others, but onion is a significant part of my vege intake). It's also been summer time and I've been eating nectarines and plums like the world is about to end.

Yesterday I stumbled upon info about FODMAPs and I was chagrined to read that onion was listed as a major problem. Nectarines and plums were also listed. Oops.

Has anyone else noticed onion as a problem in their diet? I was surprised to see it on the list - the sweet fruits made more sense to me.

I've found some resources and I'm going to experiment by cutting out the major offenders. It'll be a good way to force myself to eat other veges.

But if I want to have the hydrogen test (though I don't know where to do that in Sydney, it seems like Melbourne is where it's all happening), will going light on these foods now mean I can't be tested?

As much as I love onions (cooked or raw) they do not settle well with me and chocolate gives me awful reflux within minutes. Neither are gluten related, but they both serve as a reminder that "I'm Special". :P

  6. Well, that's not very kind and it's inconsiderate and patronizing. I am sorry that he can not/will not see your health concerns.

I hate to give people advise, when I have not walked in their shoes, but..... Not knowing much about your business, could he be in a bind if you sat out a trip? Could that get his attention? Maybe he'll step up...

But, nevertheless, I am sorry that he treated you so unkindly. :(

  7. Okay, salsa is not for me...I ate it and had a problem with it. It stated it was gluten free, brand: Spikes, all natural. I really think I'm having a problem with vinegar, which was in the ingredients. It doesnt even matter if it's distilled or not. I seem to be having a problem.

You may have an issue with grain based vinegar. A few here do. Or maybe you have not healed enough to handle the acid and spice.

  8. I'm new to celiacs stuff... curious if a person knows gluten is hard on the system why is testing important? Is it insurance? Just trying to figure out since I may get negative result due to going gluten-free for about a week for other reasons... I have been back on wheat for 4 days now... I am intense pain. I think it is the gluten (could be coincidental). If it comes back negative I kinda want to go gluten-free anyway but wondering if there is a reason to keep eating gluten to try and get a positive test result??

Please get a Celiac Serologic Panel (blood test) asap. Going gluten free for a week should not interfere with your results. It obvious that you have an issues.

If you have intense pain, you need to see a doctor and be tested. You want to rule out more serious concerns.

Please do so and check back with us. :)

  9. I took my daughter to a mother/daughter tea this afternoon. The only think I ate was grapes and apples and had water to drink. 1/2 hour after our meal I began burping...which seems to be my reaction to gluten. could the grapes or apples have been sprayed with something containing gluten to keep them from going brown? I can't seem to figure out how i got glutened...I am new to a gluten intolerance and in my first month of being gluten and diary free.

Sometimes our gluten reaction time will vary, which makes it really hard to pin-point the culprit. Certainly apples, grapes and water would not be a gluten issue.

When I have entertained and needed apples from turning, I used a mild lemon juice wash.

Are you familiar with the general concerns: shared toaster, scratched cookware, lotions, lipsticks, meds and vitamins...

  10. I'm curious what hot dogs are FOR SURE gluten free. We've always done Ball Park Franks and had no problems, but my daughter is going to a school function and they are going to be serving Oscar Mayer all beef hot dogs. I've tried looking on their website, but I'm not having any luck finding out FOR SURE which ones are gluten-free. I'd be interested to know what other brands are also gluten-free as well.

Also, I was told that Ore Ida french fries are gluten-free, but does anyone know if there's a possibility of cross contamination? These will also be served, but I've never done any store bought french fries with my daughter yet, so I'm worried.

    Thank you so much!

The only hot dog that I know of that contained gluten was Nathan's. They have reformulated and they are now gluten free.

Ore Ida's do not contain gluten. But you must check the fryer to make sure that other gluteny foods were not fried in the same oil - thus cross contamination. I probably would not be comfortable with a school fryer. Maybe bring her some chips to go with her hot dog.

  11. From a MedScape Article that I can't quote from.. here is a copy and paste:

"Although villious atrophy is not exclusive of celiac disease, it is considered a crucial finding. Other causes of blunted villi include tropical sprue, malnutrition, intolerance to cow's milk, soy protein intolerance, and infectious gastroenteritis. However, most of these conditions can be readily excluded on the basis of clinical history and laboratory data."

  12. I was told that Both Hunts Ketchup and Vlassic Pickles were gluten-free! I don't understand...I put them on my burger the other day..with gluten-free buns...and now I have the big "D"...it has to be them. What am I doing wrong, was I missed informed????

Sorry you're ill. Both Hunts Ketchup and All Vlassic's are gluten free.

Many times, your gluten reaction time can vary the longer you are gluten free. It makes it difficult to pinpoint the culprit.

  13. Hi Cassp,

Yeah, I just called them again this morning to make sure I heard it correctly. The rep told me that all of the Crest Pro-Health rinses may contain trace amounts of gluten. I was shocked, too. I threw mine out last week.

    Open Original Shared Link

Crest Pro-Health does not contain alcohol. Proctor & Gamble has been notoriously known to be extremely Celiac unfriendly, even to the point of requiring a doctors letter before ingredient information would be disclosed. <_<

I would have no problem with the listed ingredients. But, for whatever reason it bothers you (to include my above statement) , switch to something other.
