Wow is it time for your birthday AGAIN! My, how time flies when you're having fun.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAVE! May all your wishes come true! And thank you for your good work within the Celiac Community Worldwide!
-
Rye, malt or barley would unlikely be used as a thickener, and wheat would be listed.
-
That said, I've had so many surgeries prior to my diagnosis, I'm now seriously considering having "Celiac" tattoo'd on the inside of one of my wrists, just in case I'm in a car crash or something and they try to feed me that liquid food stuff down my nose.
If that were the case, I would think that having Celiac Disease would be the least of your worries!
-
Remember, not all people with Celiac have pain and discomfort when exposed to gluten.
-
What is the card that you are referring to and where can I get one!???

I apologize for the non-current list is provided. I generally try to be as accurate as possible.
I do find it hard to believe that ConAgra has changed it's labeling policy, after so many years. We in the Celiac community have know that their labels were accurate in their full disclosure of any forms of gluten.
I will write to them, requesting their current labeling policy. I have said many times, your information is only as good the customer service representative from a company.

So true--I have like 9 neutrals.....so I guess no one cares one way or the other.....

Latent celiac disease refers specifically to patients who have abnormal antibody blood tests for celiac disease but who have normal small intestines and no signs or symptoms of Celiac disease.
You could have have latent Celiac and your trigger for full symptoms was your illness. It is more common than you think.

I didn't see FAT FREE reddi whip on that list....does that mean it has gluten in it, or are they just messing with me
They're messing with you.
-
Yes, I'm crying, too.. . . .....I remember hearing all about this, but never saw the video. Lisa, 'twas a fantastic project that you took on!

My son-in-law did a great job and they sucked me into this makeover. It aired sometime last May, and I have seen re-runs.
It turned into a very interesting project. The producers don't always choose well. But the East Carolina Team put together a great video, and people signed on for the right reasons That's the important thing.

"ConAgra Foods currently does not make "gluten-free" claims on any of our products as there are no federal regulations defining "gluten-free". I can, however, share some information that will be helpful for any of our ConAgra Foods products so you can determine whether or not the product contains gluten.
* The flour used in our products is often wheat flour and should be avoided by individuals with gluten sensitivities.
* Some fermented or distilled products, such as vinegar, may be drived from wheat. We suggest that you speak to your physician to determine if you need to avoid distilled products derived from wheat, rye, barley, or oats.
* If Natural Flavors, Artificial Flavors, or Spices listed in the ingredients list contained wheat, oat, barley, or rye, these ingredients would be listed in parenthesis immediately following the ingredient.
We always advise consumers who may have sensitivities to recheck the ingredient list on the package each time you purchase it. Products are oftentimes reformulated and the ingredients may change.
If you have a question regarding a specific ingredient in a specific product, please let me know. We would be happy to contact the supplier to determine if it contains an ingredient of concern."

Hi Sillies. This was about one year ago. I thought I would post for those who have not seen this, and for those who have, my apology.

All you should need to hear are the stories of the others on this forum who have laundry lists of health problems in order to know that you should strive to be 100% gluten-free and not take risks.
But...no need to need to live in a bubble either! Life is good, go find it!

One of the genes has a 90% chance of getting it and the other has a 10% chance (this info is according to my dr at the celiac center at columbia prestbyterian in NYC).
Here is a clarification on your percentages:
Open Original Shared Link
More than 97% of patients with celiac disease have at least one of the two genes. Most patients (more than 90%) carry the DQ2 gene. Fewer than 10% carry the DQ8 gene. In the near future, researchers will likely discover additional genes that predispose an individual to celiac disease.
Important: Having these so-called "celiac disease genes" does not mean you're guaranteed to have celiac disease. In fact, majority of people with the genes never develop celiac disease. the the vast majority will not developing the disease. Having the genes only means you have a risk of someday developing celiac disease. On the other hand, if you don't have these genes, your odds of developing celiac disease are slim to none.
A DNA test cannot tell whether or not you have a certain disease. It can only show whether or not you have the genes that predispose to the disorder. Just because a person has DQ8 or DQ2, it does not mean that celiac disease is inevitable. It just means this person might develop a sensitivity to gluten.
Without the DQ2 or DQ8 genes, however, a person is extremely unlikely to develop celiac disease.

In that context, it does make total sense. They cannot document full (voluntary) compliance with the diet, when crucial/life saving measures are warranted. Ah, life is complicated, isn't it???
Yes, I understand.
BTW - As a new grandmother, your babies are beautiful.

This makes little sense. If we start absorbing foods and other things properly, why not meds?
richard
richard! Sometimes you're like a bull in a china shop!
But, I do tend to agree.

I just had spinal fusion done, and had an interesting conversation with the anesthesiologist. He said that celiacs do not absorb medications properly. He told me that it makes a tremendous difference in how he preps a person for surgery, since swallowed medicines, even glutenfree, would not work at a properly measurable level. He switched me from swallowed meds for surgery to injections.
I use oral meds for pain and such now, but he said the dosage for surgery had to be exact, and even a healed celiac would not absorb oral meds for something so vital properly. It was interesting to hear about my intestinal issues from the guy that was telling me to breathe deep and count backwards from ten!
I hope my post makes sense. I'm not sure if my spelling is correct or if I worded it correctly.
Hi Dessa - Good to see you again.
My bolded, of the quote surprised me. I would like to learn more about "healed" people with Celiac, not being able to absorb crucial meds.
I would have thought, that once healed, the Celiac Disease would be in total remission, unless gluten was re-introduced.
In the case of severe damage, extended damage or refractory sprue, it would make sense that healing would be hindered.
Thanks for posting this.

thanx for you qik reply...jon has steroid injection AFTER he told the consultant he had already had a reaction to steroid tabs and ended up in hosp not 4 weeks previous ..he didnt believe him!!!!!...his last endoscopy showed villi damage and so was diagnosed celiacs...i think they are now saying he has exposure to gluten but i dont know where from im sooo careful. im careful bout x contamination and dont buy any processed food unless i know it is safe, i have now segregated part of the kitchen just for jons food...my poor man looks like a victim of a pow camp. he has no spare weight to loose so you can imagine my concern...honestly i would never ever imagined just how awful this could all be.
I too am sorry for your difficulties. There are other causes for blunted villi. Have these options been ruled out:
Open Original Shared Link
Although villous atrophy is not exclusive of celiac disease, it is considered a crucial finding. Other causes of blunted villi include tropical sprue, malnutrition, intolerance to cow's milk, soy protein intolerance, and infectious gastroenteritis. However, most of these conditions can be readily excluded on the basis of clinical history and laboratory data.
Have your eliminated dairy from his diet?

I JSUT read in Elizabeth Hasselbeck's book that envelope glue had gluten in it. Her book is cowritten with a gastro doctor. It's hard to determine who to believe, so I just don't like them!

The Celiac Blood Panel is highly unreliable for children under the age of five. Yes, she would have to be consuming gluten for increased accuracy.
Knowing that her doctors has prescribed a gluten free diet, and that she get violently sick after consuming gluten...would be strong enough evidence for your family to comply with your requirements.

Lisa,
Thanks for the links---those are what I saw and then questioned Heinz. They said it was a glitch and the Organic is gluten-free. Honestly, my son is SOOO much better today----I will say that it can't be gluten-free
There is just NO way. I don't understand it--but perhaps a spice or something is cross contaminated and my kids and husband are just really sensitive---especially eating it every day with practically every meal
I do remember this topic from the past and it was discussed that Organic was now gluten free. Well, until Heinz can clear up their own information, I would choose other. The rest of their ketchup product are gluten free, according to their website.
Glad you found the issue. Often time, it's too hard to pinpoint.

Organic is not listed as gluten free on the label, as the others are.

Questions Regarding MyHeinz.com Products
Are the products offered gluten-free? All Heinz Ketchups, with the exception of Heinz Organic Ketchup, are free of gluten-containing ingredients. Heinz Dijon Mustard also is a product that is free of gluten-containing ingredients.
***********
This topic has come up in the past. I don't know how old this statement is, and the Organic Ketchup may now be gluten free.
Remember, your information is only as good as their Customer Service People.
I'll try to find some current information.

I think it was just a feature that came with the new format. It has meaning, only if you want it too.
