  1. Try getting more fats like butter (or ghee if you can't tolerate dairy), coconut oil, olives, olive oil, nut butters (when your intestines are better), fattier cuts of meat and yes, avocados! And don't forget to grease the pan.
  2. Here's one. I ended up using prunes pureed with a bit of water to replace the peanut butter or black bean paste. It was delicious! Forgot the link: Open Original Shared Link I used wheat free soy, of course.
  3. It is probably the high flouride content in tea that can bind to the thyroid hormone and make it unusable. I'm not a huge green tea drinker, maybe just a cup or two a day, and I haven't found it bothers me.
  4. The Legal/Illegal list often has explanations of the whys: Open Original Shared Link
  5. Are these cast iron? Which size do you like the best? I'd be interested in hearing which pieces (size, model, etc) you all like the best!
  6. I think one thing you gotta be aware of is consuming too much fiber early on isn't such a great thing. Also consuming huge quantities of anything isn't good either. If I get the bulk of my calories from protein and fat with very modest amounts of fruit and veggies I do a lot better. But if I start eating large quanitities of anything I get in trouble...
  7. Same thing with me. It seems like after going gluten-free/DF I am finding a lot of foods upset me. My theory is that either the symptoms were masked by the symptoms of my other, harsher food intolerances or else my gut is still healing and not quite ready to bring chocolate back. Strangely, I don't get the reaction to cocoa, just to chocolate in bars...
  8. I'm the one recently diagnosed with AS. There are reactive forms of autoimmune arthritis that happen if you get infected with a bacteria like salmonella or possibly a list of other bad bugs. You might want to look up Reiter's syndrome. AS and possibly RA might also be related to bacterial bugs in the gut getting the immune system in a lather. Did...
  9. Ah! Interesting. The food science guy made it sounds like it would happen with just some citric acid and cooking.

    ARCHIVED Butter?

I know it has a lot of the milk proteins removed I just don't know if it is 100%. I have been eating it myself and either it slips by unnoticed or they're simply not there. I did cook it for quite awhile, until the milk solids fell to the bottom of the pan and carmelized. If you search for ghee casein it sounds like it is probably casein free. Sure...
  11. I'm learning a lot about food science from reading, and talking to a guy that knows a lot about it. In particular I've been curious about sugars and non-nutritive sweeteners and whether or not they're digested or mono or disacchrides. I just learned something interesting. Acids, like lemon juice or vinegar, break the bonds on disacchrides into monosaccharides...
  12. I've had to give up so many foods: all grains, all dairy, chocolate and now all starches. Each one caused me to grieve a little and be a bit resentful of my fate. But I knew that I am a smart, adaptible person and I could find new foods to love and be healthier as the end result. I have done it. Oh sure, I miss the old stuff sometimes. But I don't dwell...
  13. LOL! In my family this wouldn't be a problem. We're earthy folks. I think your fast gave you your answer. Now try eating on everything except dairy and gluten and see if you feel as good. Chances are you've probably got some pretty badly damaged intestines and you might want to try out a diet like SCD to get things healed. See breakingtheviciouscycle...
  14. My pet theory now is that we've got some bad gut bugs that feed on starches and having a food intolerances makes it hard for the good bugs to thrive and lets the bad bugs take over. I think once the gut heals up and the balance of "good and evil" is restored then we won't be responding so harshly to so many things.
  15. I poached pears the other night. I wasn't sure what to poach them in so I used some 100% cranberry juice and some sweetener. Your recipe sounds great! I am going to try it. You could use honey though in place of sugar. I make an egg based custards all the time. I would think dilluting it with some coconut milk and using vanilla instead of lemon...
  16. This is the one disease where you can treat yourself without ever seeing a doctor. Have you considered giving a gluten free diet a good 2 week trial and seeing how you feel? A lot of people just go by their own diagnosis. I think it really makes sense given that doctor's are unable to diagnose non-celiac gluten intolerance. In fact, that is exactly...
  17. Not very much. The NSD diet includes no starches at all. The gluten free diet just means you don't eat one particular form of starch. The SCD diet that some of us do is a No-starch diet too. www.kickAS.org has lots of info about the NSD diet.
  18. I think grains are highly overrated on their nutriuosness. Generally they lose it all during processing and have it sprayed back on in the form of artificial vitamins. You can more than make up for the loss by eating an assortment of vegetables, meats and fruits.
  19. I'm not sure but I do recall the book said something on the subject. I thought cider was ok? If all else fails you can look on the web site: breakingtheviciouscycle.info on the legal list. I think you slowly introduce raw fruits and veggies one at a time once the D. has stopped. For me it always seems to take 24 hours for bad effects to happen, so I...
  20. I decided a while back that feeding any grain or the amount of carbs to cats we do feed them is bad. I think that is why so many become diabetic and overweight. I have my cat on a raw diet now. I feed him raw food, with ground bones if I can get it. He seems to be doing well!
  21. I think you're supposed to peel and cook apples until you've been on the diet awhile. I know pectin was one thing she thought was bad to send down the chowder chute and apples have lots of pectin in their skins. I'm not good about obeying this stricture myself.
  22. I think 1 drop of some of the stuff I have is 2 tsp.
  23. Nicole, I really recommend you don't just ignore the AS dx. It really can be crippling and it does oftentimes leave people unable to lead normal lives and gives them terrible pain! Here's a great place to learn more: Open Original Shared Link If I were you I'd jump onto the NSD diet and see if that helps with your pain.
  24. I make huge quanities of stuff and freeze it. Here's a GREAT pork shoulder roast. Makes a lot. I find whole spices at the health food store that are pretty inexpensive and use a coffee grinder (dedicated to the task) to grind them. This requires sitting in its dry rub in the fridge over night, so you do have to plan ahead a bit. Then it takes 4-6 hours...
  25. That would be cool! I'd love to know. I've gotten real interested in microbiology lately since I found out that my arthritis might be caused by klebsiella pneumonia bacteria! But it's diet is starch. The other thing is concentration. We're talking about incredibly small amounts of sucralose since it is so strong. I know I get more bacteria food...
