ARCHIVED Anyone Doing Scd?
Nancym replied to Rachel--24's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I didn't do the intro and I kind of "eased" into the diet so really, it took me about 2 weeks. I was eating nuts and things I still have trouble with. The way I intrepreted it was no, since she said follow it until the diarrhea stops. I was reading some yahoo list somewhere (pecanbread?) and they said that the Friendship brand of farmer's cheese... -
ARCHIVED Pet Food
Nancym replied to happy4dolphins's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've started feeding my cat raw food. He was getting too fat on anything with grains. I really can't believe cats should be eating grains at all. However, the industry doesn't give us much choice. So anyway, I found a few places that grind up the bones and all and send it to you frozen. Its more expensive, but the cat seems a lot healthier. I just... -
ARCHIVED Distended Stomach - Lots Of Pain - I'm Confused!
Nancym replied to DingoGirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Same thing happened to me. Gave up gluten and I was SO much better for a few weeks then I back slid. I'm finding sensitivities to a lot of things right now. Basically what seems to help me was to go on the SCD diet (sans dairy) and slowly try new things. Diary, chocolate, and I think nuts are not going down without a fight. -
Ankylosing spondylitis is one of many forms of inflammatory arthritis, the most common of which is rheumatoid arthritis. Ankylosing spondylitis primarily causes inflammation of the joints between the vertebrae of your spine and the joints between your spine and pelvis (sacroiliac joints). However, ankylosing spondylitis may also cause inflammation and pain...

I just got diagnosed with this from my Rheumy. Anyone else have this? I'm 47. Seems a little weird to be getting diagnosed with this at my age. I suppose I could have had it for years and years, since I have been suffering from mysterious joint/tendon pains for quite a long time.

ARCHIVED The Paleo Diet
Nancym replied to covsooze's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I've got lots of recipes over at this web site, I'm Nancy LC over there: Open Original Shared Link Search for Lemon Curd over in the Sweet Treats section. There's also a Paleo message forum there too. Ghee... I make myself. Basically you cook butter until all the milk proteins fall to the bottom. I don't know if it is 100% casein free but it is pretty... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet?
Nancym replied to PreOptMegs's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I don't think even at 24 hours it was all that sharp, not like the milk gets. But try it! You can stop it after 12 and see what it tastes like. I just dumped out a batch... grrr! I had put my coconut milk mixture in the sink filled with cold water and ice and the container turned a bit and took on some of the water/ice. Well, I didn't think anything... -
ARCHIVED Autoimmunity Diseases Gluten Connection
Nancym replied to Claire's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My joint pain has gotten a lot better since I've been on my modified SCD (no dairy). But... as with joint pain (I might have Lupus) it comes and goes. So perhaps I'm just in a relatively pain free time. I intend to try various foods again, after my intestines have had awhile to heal up, but for now I keep my diet pretty limited. Good thing I really love... -
Gluten does to us what heroin does to a heroin addict. You've got to break off all ties to your drug, whatever it is.

ARCHIVED The Paleo Diet
Nancym replied to covsooze's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Paleo diet should be quite high in protein so it might just help you put on muscle, which you probably need. I'm not on the Paleo diet, but a diet that is pretty similar, SCD. I eat: Breakfast: eggs dressed up in stuff like proscuitto or chicken/turkey sausages with good spices (I get them at Trader Joe's). Lunch: Large salad with chicken breast... -
ARCHIVED Why Is There More"wind"?
Nancym replied to 4tomorrow's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
After I became aware of my gluten issues and went gluten free, I started paying more attention to how my digestion was working and what things upset my stomach or gave me gas. I'd been ignoring all this for years figuring everyone was like me.... cramped up on the toilet at times, blowing gas, etc. Well, it turns out there's more things rotten than just... -
I think it is like heroine. When you go clean, you gotta go all the way clean. If you keep indulging you're just feeding your addiction.

ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet?
Nancym replied to PreOptMegs's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I didn't think it would work to strain because it doesn't really separate into whey and curds like yogurt does. But I haven't tried it. I think with the gelatin there it just wouldn't drain anything out. It doesn't taste much like coconut milk because the lactic acid gives it quite a tang. -
ARCHIVED Looking For gluten-free/df/sf Cookbooks
Nancym replied to ebrbetty's topic in Publications & Publicity
I've heard good reviews for "Garden of Eating". It's on the web if you search for it. I've got mine on order. -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet?
Nancym replied to PreOptMegs's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'll try! I never use exact anything when I cook. First get some yogurt starter. Whole Foods market carries them or you can order off the internet. I haven't found any that are 100% casein free though. But you only use 5g of it and you can reuse and thus dilute the casein. I use a Salton yogurt maker which costs about $15 from Bed, Bath and... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet?
Nancym replied to PreOptMegs's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yes! I do it without the dairy. I make yogurt from coconut milk and a bit of honey (add gelatin to thicken it some). -
ARCHIVED Casein Intolerant Question
Nancym replied to teankerbell's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Casein is in dairy products. If you have a soy problem, it'd be with the protein in soy, whatever it is called. Completely separate thing. -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Results
Nancym replied to flampton's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Testing your own children, sure. But expecting your relatives to get tested. Don't count on it. I got tested and confirmation. Sent email to all my siblings and warned them they might potentially have this too. I don't think any of them took it seriously. Meanwhile, I see their kids suffering too. Very, very sad they're not taking it seriously. ... -
ARCHIVED Autoimmunity Diseases Gluten Connection
Nancym replied to Claire's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
The principle behind the Paleo diet is that you don't eat anything that hasn't been eaten for the last 10,000 years. So that eliminates grains, legumes, plants in the nightshade family (potatos, tomatos, eggplant) and dairy products. Its very similar to the SCD diet, if you were to remove the few dairy products she allows. I'm doing SCD. Its been dandy... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet?
Nancym replied to PreOptMegs's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
TSH of 1.35 is good. But you might want to get your Free T3 and Free T4 checked out (not to be confused with T3 or T4 or Total T3, TT3, etc). I can have a "normal" TSH and my Free T3 will be below range. It helps for me to supplement with a bit of Armour (natural) thyroid. If you're on BC pills or HRT you might have a low T3 because apparently it causes... -
ARCHIVED Did U Find More Sensitivites To Foods?
Nancym replied to Moongirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yeah! Its like I had to clear up the noise from the gluten to figure out it wasn't the only thing. Dairy, possibly corn, chocolate... all seem to be a problem to me. -
Ow! Sugar alcohols are probably the culprit here. Some of them are very bad. The best of the lot is Erythritol which doesn't give me any gas at all. The worst of the lot are the ones in what you ate. You might want to look into the SCD diet. I relapsed into diarrhea I just couldn't clear up until I started SCD. The goal of this diet is to eliminate...

There's that old saying, "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink". This is particularly true when it comes to trying to convince your family they have a hereditary health issue that affects their diet. My best advice is, give it up. Don't harp on it or them it'll just create friction and probably won't change their minds.

I'm in the process of getting evaluated by a rhuemy, for other AI diseases and he mentioned Sjogren's. My eyes aren't terribly dry, or my mouth either. But actually, now that he mentioned it, my left eye is always bloodshot and feels a bit irritated. So maybe it really is! Anyway, I have a mildly positive ANA test and a lot of Lupus symptoms. So... I...

ARCHIVED No, Please, Not Chocolate!
Nancym replied to Nancym's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've tried several. Some from Trader Joe's. They're made from regional cocoa beans from Ecuador and another country. Sort of fancy, schmancy chocolate. I don't believe there was any soy listed on the label, but I'll have to go back and look. I don't react badly to soy sauce (without the gluten), so I have a feeling it probably is the chocolate. Life...
