  1. This is really the one disease where you can do, in fact must do, the treatment yourself. You don't really need any confirmation from a doctor. Your own testing is as good, if not better, than theirs. I don't really even see how doctors add any value here, other than catching the ocassional case themselves before the patient does. Their nutritional training...
  2. From Enterolab FAQ:
  3. I have DQ8 (that's 0302 isn't it?) and also 0501. I'm also casein intolerant. My symptoms were IBS, autoimmune thryoid disease, lots of joint/muscle aches. I don't have allergies. I think I also get brain fog from gluten. I've heard the 0501 gene is tied to neurological effects of gluten intolerance. What are fluoroquinolones found in?
  4. Oh yes! I have a good article for you to read: Open Original Shared Link There's lots of folks at the low carb forum I frequent who say that it cured them of their GERD. Open Original Shared Link?
  5. I've been doing some reading at the FDA web site and Kosher web site. I don't know how commonly this happens, but if they've got some product from another run with wheat, they're allowed to mix the left over stuff with the next stuff they run through. So lets say they're making cookies. They could be switching over to chocolate chip from raisin but have...
  6. Do not use vanilla from MEXICO! They use a plant that is toxic but tastes like vanilla. Or at least be very, very careful: I just saw the Good Eats episode on vanilla and he said, according to US law, Vanilla extract must be X% of alcohol and Y% of vanilla (forget what X and Y are). That's it. Now, artificial vanilla extract can be made from other...
  7. I have a good 20 pounds I'd like to lose and I have been dieting for about 3 years trying to lose around a total of 65. Since I've been on SCD I've still been stuck and unable to lose, but it is a slightly lower low than before. I've got no metabolism.
  8. Good for you! So glad you were proactive about that. Boy, we should really have access to that information as well. How horrible to find out about it like that.
  9. My response to your posting was anger. But happiness you got a diagnosis finally. I can't believe how someone could label you an alcoholic even though you don't drink! I think if that happened to me I'd probably write and have notarized some sort of statement and tell the doctor to include it in my medical file. That would probably intimidate the hell...
  10. Rachel, glad to see you've found some things wrong to account for your continuing problems! I think I'm like you, still got something going on. GI appt not until Mar though. :\
  11. Nothing like using a search engine like Google to find what you need. Here's a promising web site: Open Original Shared Link
  12. I found it quite common in the wet foods where there is a "gravy" in it also in Pounce kitty treats.
  13. Wow, that's weird. I have been both hyperthyroid and hypothyroid but I've never heard of anyone in your shape. Do you have Graves and Hashi's? I heard it can happen together.
  14. Cats aren't adapted to eating gluten, or any grains for that matter. I finally have my cat on an all meat diet. Oddly enough, its the cheaper cat foods in the big cans, that are often grain free. But now I'm buying frozen raw food for him and he isn't vomiting any longer!
  15. Wow, sounds like you need a thorough health exam. Get your thyroid checked too. You might also try getting off dairy products for a couple of weeks and see if that helps. I think that sort of compulsive eating of something could indicate an intolerance. I was that way with both dairy and wheat. And guess what... intolerant of both. An intolerance to...
  16. Melatonin is being linked to cancer, in a good way. People who are exposed to lights at night don't produce it and get higher rates of cancer. There's even some cancer therapies being run now using melatonin. I take it every night. I've heard of some people having a pretty dramatic effect from it, but it never affected me that strongly.
  17. Definitely! I'm not celiac status either, but I'm most assuredly gluten intolerant. I think it has been responsible for some of my autoimmune issues (thyroid, now Lupus - pretty sure). I'm off both gluten and dairy and my energy is coming back a bit. I think Dr. Fine (www.enterolab.com) has some wonderful info out there for folks like us. People like...
  18. I wonder if the high rate of food intolerances is because there was a period where doctors were encouraging women to NOT breastfeed. In fact, my own mother didn't breastfeed any of us because doctors were telling them that formula was healthier. *sigh*
  19. According to the safe/forbidden list on Celiac.com its ok if it is manufactured in the US, it is always made from corn. In Europe, it might be made from wheat.
  20. You might want to hop onto the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. It really helps to calm things down. I couldn't get my diarrhea stopped and being on this for about 2 weeks really turned things around. I like the diet but I'm not convinced it does everything they claim in the book. www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info
  21. I agree that he shouldn't be eating there if they're not going to comply. You might also explain to them that alcohol based skin cleansers kill bacteria, they don't do anything to proteins, like gluten.
  22. Oddly enough, I think it was gluten that was causing my binges, that and milk. Intolerant to both. Since I've been on SCD I haven't binged at all. Well, I did overeat on nuts, but I didn't binge!
  23. I have a wonderful friend who is also incredibly good about accommodating me! I haven't really dealt with this issue yet myself. Maybe what I would do is ask if I could bring a dish and if they demurr, I might explain the issue. Its tough. I know once I had company that wouldn't eat a wide range of things and they didn't really let me know ahead of...
  24. Mind you, I've only skimmed the book and read selected stuff but I believe that for most people she recommends staying on the diet for about a year. After that, she advises not going back and eating a diet of a lot of grains and to limit complex sugars and starches. Its very similar to the sort of diet Dr. Fine and Dr. Braly (Dangerous Grains) recommend...
  25. That's wonderful! You know, sometimes I think people just have no idea what they would eat without gluten. I have thought perhaps supplying someone like that with a weeks worth of possible menus might be valuable. Usually when you find a food intolerance the first thing you think is "But what can I eat"? With the general panic that sets in right afterwards...
