ARCHIVED Help! I Work In A Bakery.
NoGlutenCooties replied to JennaQ's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think it depends on how sensitive you are to gluten. (How do you know for sure that you're not Celiac?) If you are around flour that is in the air, you breathe it in and end up swallowing it. In my opinion, if you are mildly sensitive to gluten, this may not cause you trouble. Handling dough and finished products shouldn't be a problem at all - as long... -
ARCHIVED Glutened Or Just Healing?
NoGlutenCooties replied to moosemalibu's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
True... many medical resources do not see the benefit in digestive enzymes... or many other supplements for that matter. Nor do they typically research them very well, in my opinion, probably because the medical field doesn't make any money on natural cures. (but that's just my own general distrust of the medical profession) I think the best test is... -
ARCHIVED Should I Get Tested?
NoGlutenCooties replied to Bree-cda's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well... because what the "normal" is differs from lab to lab and because some doctors may consider a "weak positive" to be nothing to worry about while another doctor may consider a "high negative" to still be worth investigating further. I just think there are so many potential variables in the diagnosis that different doctors interpret "borderline" results... -
ARCHIVED Glutened Or Just Healing?

Digestion does continue in the small intestine. Digestive enzymes help your body break things down more easily. This article explains it pretty well: Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Right Side Of Head Aching
NoGlutenCooties replied to eers03's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Just a thought... have you seen a dentist? Sometimes face pain can be associated with TMJ issues or teeth-grinding and/or jaw clenching. -
ARCHIVED Should I Get Tested?
NoGlutenCooties replied to Bree-cda's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the forum... and I'm so sorry that your body has started to betray you. It sounds to me like all of your symptoms could be related to Celiac... which I must add, doesn't say a whole lot because it seems that just about anything and everything *could* be related to Celiac. Don't discount Celiac just because you don't have the "typical" abdominal... -

ARCHIVED Glutened Or Just Healing?
NoGlutenCooties replied to moosemalibu's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Have you tried Whey protein? It is derived from dairy, but many with dairy sensitivities can tolerate it well because it is very easy to digest and has little to no lactose in it. I use the Designer Whey brand - French Vanilla flavor - and mix it in water. It has 18 grams of protein, 2 grams of sugars, and no weird additives. And no weird aftertaste either... -
ARCHIVED Glutened Or Just Healing?

I *think* having a reaction to gluten-free oats is rare, but I know my uncle and my mother - both Celiacs - cannot tolerate even certified gluten-free oats. (I haven't bothered to try them.) They give my uncle the same symptoms as if he had eaten gluten. It's my understanding that the protein in oats is very similar to the gluten protein and can trigger... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed And My Head's Spinning!
NoGlutenCooties replied to foolintherain's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think that once you start feeling better, that's when it begins to get easier. It starts to feel worth it. -
ARCHIVED Newbie Questions About Whisky
NoGlutenCooties replied to KCG91's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The distillation process removes the gluten, along with any other solids. However, you have to be careful about flavored liquors - depending on what they flavor it with. Just a word of warning though... I found that I became much more effected by alcohol once I went gluten-free. I used to be able to have 4 or 5 mixed drinks and not even really feel buzzed... -
ARCHIVED Possibly Celiac, Have A Few Questions Please
NoGlutenCooties replied to missjec's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
For what it's worth, I didn't have any symptoms at all but my biopsy showed moderate to severe villi damage. I only got the bloodtest in the first place because Celiac is in my family and wanted a base-line, thinking that for sure it would be negative because I didn't have any symptoms. I don't think being asymptomatic, especially early on, is all that... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge? Or Just Stay Off?
NoGlutenCooties replied to capmish's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
<set sarcasm on> What? You mean throwing up and having your body hurt and having diarrhea isn't healthy? How could *that* possibly cause any issues?? <set sarcasm off> I completely agree with you and didn't mean to imply that NCGI wasn't harmful just because it doesn't damage the villi. I think you're right... common sense would tell... -
ARCHIVED Am I Really Celiac?
NoGlutenCooties replied to Nick-incollege's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Alcohol can definitely make you tired - for one thing, it can mess with your blood sugar level and give you low blood sugar, which can make you feel extremely tired. -
ARCHIVED Ridiculous Conversations
NoGlutenCooties replied to Auntie-Manda's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Last night I was explaining the whole Celiac thing to an acquaintance, who said, "But you can have pasta, right? I mean there can't be *that* much gluten in pasta, can there? Right?" *sigh* -
ARCHIVED Thoughts On My Symptoms? Should I Be Tested?
NoGlutenCooties replied to Vernie822's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'll caveat my response with... I'm relatively new at this. That said, your symptoms sound very much like potential Celiac. There's no harm in getting tested - request a full Celiac panel (bloodtest) from your doctor. Keep eating gluten in the meantime or it will mess up the test. In the meantime, a digestive enzyme may help alleviate some of your symptoms... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge? Or Just Stay Off?
NoGlutenCooties replied to capmish's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't mean to discourage you... just give you a friendly head's up so it doesn't catch you by surprise... some folks have reported that some of their symptoms get worse before they get better... seems to be part of the healing process. Could be withdrawal. It goes away. You may also discover other food intolerances at first... sensitivity to dairy seems... -
ARCHIVED Questions About Anxiety & Probiotics
NoGlutenCooties replied to Raywuwei's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I've been taking a heavy-duty probiotic every day for years. I have never heard any warnings about not taking probiotics every day, or over a long period of time, or anything along those lines. However, I have heard that if you take too many of them they can cause a little gas and bloating - nothing harmful, just don't take as much. I wouldn't worry too...- 7 replies

ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge? Or Just Stay Off?
NoGlutenCooties replied to capmish's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Oh... forgot to mention... there is a "Newbie 101" section on the "Coping with Celiac" board that has some good information in it and may give you a decent starting point. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge? Or Just Stay Off?
NoGlutenCooties replied to capmish's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Capmish - welcome! First... that lost, alone, what-the-heck-do-I-do-now feeling is very common, completely understandable, and you are definitely not alone! Second... all of your symptoms sound like Celiac. Non-Celiac Gluten Intollerance presents itself with all of the same symptoms, but without the villi damage, so it could definitely be that too.... -
ARCHIVED Dealing With The Emotional Aspects Of Ai Disease
NoGlutenCooties replied to BelleVie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Please forgive me for lurking outside the door of your pity-party and eavesdropping... the mention of possible Thyroid issues forced me out of the shadows. I don't know if you guys are into vitamins - some people believe in them, some don't. They have helped me tremendously and I credit them for my normal blood panel even while Celiac and my so-far speedy... -
ARCHIVED Body Knows Best?
NoGlutenCooties replied to MashedSpud's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I didn't get any "I feel sick" warnings... but I never liked bread. I would eat an occassional bagel, but they made me tired and gave me darker circles under my eyes. I thought it was empty carbs hitting me. But now that I know I have Celiac, I think my body was trying to tell me something. Another example... most protein bars leave a funny aftertaste... -
I'll caveat this with this information came from various nutritionists and I don't have any source information to share - but I have found it to be true for me. Make sure you're getting enough water. If you're dehydrated, it can actually make you feel less hungry. Also, don't fill up on fluids right before you eat or while you're eating. Eat your food...

ARCHIVED How Accurate Are The Tests?
NoGlutenCooties replied to NoGlutenCooties's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Something else that just occurred to me... it's probably difficult to determine when a negative result has been a "false negative". If the patient later gets a positive result, either from a retest of the blood test or through a biopsy how do they know if the original blood test was a false-negative or maybe the person actually did not have Celiac yet at... -
ARCHIVED Huge Painful Tummy After gluten-free Dinner. Now What?
NoGlutenCooties replied to NanaV's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If ordering au jus from a restaurant, it almost always has gluten in it: "If ordering meat, be aware that au jus almost always contains gluten." (Open Original Shared Link) When I contacted Houston's (a high-end steakhouse in my area - they are located in various areas around the country) they said I would have to order their steak without the au jus...
