ARCHIVED gluten-free Ranch Dressing
tarnalberry replied to celiac-mommy's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
assuming peanut free doesn't mean all-nut free, then you can make your own out of cashews. the recipe is on my Open Original Shared Link thread, iirc. I personally prefer raspberry salad dressing. or honey mustard. -
It's not a reporter who wrote the book. It's a research doctor. The idea that he's talking about is that if you're on a *very* calorie restricted diet (heck, you're in the middle of a mild ice age), and you're not consuming much of anything to raise blood sugar levels very high. In addition, because it's so cold, the stores of brown fat (which can...

ARCHIVED This Sucks With My Crazy-busy, Travelin' Life!
tarnalberry replied to Rivergirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
there's "slowing down" and there's "SLOWING DOWN". you can slow down to the point of taking one day a week to cook yourself up a bunch of food that you can eat throughout the rest of the week (lots of things will stay good for four or five days in a fridge, or longer in a freezer) that can fit in with your schedule. also, learning what things you can cook... -
ARCHIVED Tummy Discomfort And Excersize
tarnalberry replied to ginap73's topic in Sports and Fitness
regardless of what I eat, running can 'stimulate my intestines', which can be uncomfortable. it's usually something I can work through, however, and definitely something I can train through, given time and patience. -
but for some of us, maintaining a strictly gluten free diet does nothing to alleviate those autoimmune conditions, which exist in areas where wheat consumption is significantly different than here. not everyone has everything get better going gluten free. it may be part of the story, but the genetic basis for these other autoimmune conditions leads me...

ARCHIVED Raw Vegan Food, Is It Safe?
tarnalberry replied to tuxedocat's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
a raw foods place can almost always be counted on to have gluten free options, but not all of the raw foods will be gluten free - there might only be a few items. I have liked the places I've tried, and say that it's worth giving it a go, but I have funny tastes. -
ARCHIVED Fibromyalgia? Ra? Both?
tarnalberry replied to num1habsfan's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
RA is ruled out with blood tests that are fairly straightforward. Fibro is a dx of exclusion (one of the things to exclude being RA, but also lyme, hypothyroid, and others). My understanding is that the use of trigger points is an important guideline (certainly for "textbook diagnosis") but it's as much art as science. -
They're right, if reasonable accommodations can't be made, they do not have to continue providing you with a job. (I don't think a phone in the bathroom would be considered reasonable. *whoosh* ) It's a tough call... having it on your record can help and hurt you. I'd talk to lawyer about it, frankly, who knows the full ramifications.

I have/had migraines and regular headaches. The migraines do not appear to be related to gluten at all, and a low dose (100mg) Topomax regime works well as a preventative for me. The regular headaches are, apparently, related to my forward head posture. As I've mentioned before, I'm seeing a chiropractor about this and a couple other things, and I...

ARCHIVED Iga Anti-gliadin Antibodies - Does It Ever Resolve?
tarnalberry replied to bjshad's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
All it means is that, in the presence of gluten, your daughter's body is producing antibodies specific to gliandin (the wheat protein) of the IgA sub-type. Ig antibodies are a particular set of antibodies the body manufactures against things it thinks are bad. IgE antibodies are what cause traditional allergies. IgA and IgG antibodies (to food proteins... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Eating House Guests
tarnalberry replied to tourmark's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
We have guests over for dinner often, and everything I serve is gluten free. I offered bread in a basket once or twice, but was too nervous about crumbs as the basket was passed back and forth over the serving dishes. My in-laws have stayed a number of times, for anywhere between 3 days and nearly two weeks. As my father-in-law is on the ornish diet... -
ARCHIVED Moving, Possibly To A Big City...wanting Opinions
tarnalberry replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
"Best" is SOOOOO relative. I've lived (outside of college) in San Jose, CA; Orange County, CA; and Seattle, WA. I have no interest in moving off the west coast, and that's partly a culture thing. (It's not that one culture is bad and one is good; they're different and we have our own preferences.) Many people love Seattle, and I like many things about... -
ARCHIVED Do You Think Onset Of Acute Bout Of Celiac Disease Is Triggered By Exercise?
tarnalberry replied to sandylulu's topic in Sports and Fitness
What power bar did you eat? I believe all of these have gluten in them - at the very least, oats. -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Here Take Omega 3 Fish Oil Caps
tarnalberry replied to bluejeangirl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I take fish oil (liquid form) at around 7 grams a day (yes, grams) for anti-inflammatory purposes (the dosage has been tailored for me, I'm not trying to make recommendations), and don't experience nausea, but you might try different brands, and make sure that they're staying fresh (kept in the fridge, etc.) -
ARCHIVED Sacroiliac Joint Inflamation
tarnalberry replied to confusedks's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I have sacroilliac instability issues, and I'm seeing a chiropractor for it. If you can find one that specializes in structural based correction (posture, traction, and adjustment) I'd recommend it. My problem is a combination of twists along the spine and general tendency in my posture, along with a pelvis that isn't the same 'height' on both sides. ... -
ARCHIVED Poll: Are You Proud Of....
tarnalberry replied to LoveBeingATwin's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I put myself in the not-so-proud category; I'm an aerospace software/systems engineer. For now... -
ARCHIVED Chewing Gum?
tarnalberry replied to GeoffCJ's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
haha! I found a new one that isn't! it's... some sort of cube thing, and has a endothermic reaction to make the first few chews make your mouth cold... Oh, here it is: Open Original Shared Link, at least the Dragon Fruit Flavor. The wheat is listed right on the ingredients, and yes, I did get bitten by not checking first! -
ARCHIVED Wedding Vent
tarnalberry replied to blueeyedmanda's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
You can see from Open Original Shared Link that people dressed very differently. My problem was less what people wore, rather my dad threatened to not come because I invited my mom's side of the family (my mom died 23 years ago). Then one of my bridesmaids got lost on her way to the site, and was missing from most of the pictures. Then the cake was an... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Else See Sicko?
tarnalberry replied to floridanative's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I never said that referrals are stupid - you're absolutely right that taking advantage of who your doctor knows is useful. But when referrals become *necessary* (not just an option), it reduces your networking, because it doesn't allow you to contact doctors that you may be able to connect to through people other than your doctor. My doctor's referral for... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Else See Sicko?
tarnalberry replied to floridanative's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
We should not associate a potential American socialized medicine program with the Canadian socialized medicine program - they would likely be very different; just because it works one way in Canada doesn't mean we'd do anything like that in the US. As for the idea that it's too much onous on a person to know what specialist they need to see... Well, quite... -
ARCHIVED Mead Envelopes
tarnalberry replied to radgirl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
we've yet to see on this board a confirmed case of an envelope glue with gluten. in fact, when the major glue company was called, they kinda were amused at the idea. I see it as a celiac urban legend. if you do have a *confirmed* case of a gluten laced envelope glue, please do share it. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Is Developed In The Dough?
tarnalberry replied to stef-the-kicking-cuty's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
it's just that the term is being overused, for different things. gluten, when referring to the protein that causes the autoimmune reaction in celiacs, is one thing. gluten, when referring to the binding matrix in a kneaded dough, is another (the later is generally chemically dependent on the former to form). gluten, as a general term for the primary grain... -
ARCHIVED Vitamin D Recommendations?
tarnalberry replied to grey's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
vit D, which should be in the form of D3, not D2, is not sufficient. a study a while ago found that magnesium was the most important thing for treating osteoporosis in celiacs. you might look into that as well, along with weight bearing exercise. -
ARCHIVED Emotional Iissues Over "being Different"
tarnalberry replied to pinktroll's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think, from everything you describe, that you're on the right track. While I say this from the perspective of not being a parent at all, I was a kid who had to work through being different, and if it's a serious concern, consider working with a child counselor to help your daughter build the coping skills and attitude needed for dealing with this. I have...
