ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed With Questions
tarnalberry replied to mandyann's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
And sometimes we have problems that are independent of celiac disease. I have migraines, that became an issue two years *after* going gluten free, and appear to be unrelated to celiac (or any other food trigger I can identify). I have to take prophylactic medication (topomax) for them, because they would come so often. But Carla is right, improvement... -
ARCHIVED Really Random Sandwich
tarnalberry replied to Mango04's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I'd vote chicken over turkey, due to the hummus, but yes, that would be one tasty sandwhich. Wonder if you could get a tomato to stay on that thing? -
ARCHIVED How Can I Help My Husband Understand?
tarnalberry replied to hannahsue01's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't want to generalize about men, and I wasn't trying to imply that you should be the one taking responsibility to just do it whenever he wants, but merely that you guys need to be on the same page - both with non-intercourse options and understanding each other's feelings and abilities and 'space' in the issue at the moment (and as that evolves). It... -
ARCHIVED I'm Hungry All The Time....
tarnalberry replied to Lollie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
are you getting enough fat/fiber/protein? what you list there, aside from the cottage cheese, looks like it's probably pretty high in sugar and not too helpful to balanced blood sugar levels... that'll keep you hungry and snacking. -
ARCHIVED Not Serious?
tarnalberry replied to Ophelia42's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
To be fair, I would probably give similar, albeit caveated, advice. I would probably also tell someone "It's not that serious, as long as you make sure to avoid all gluten." And the idea that you can reintroduce foods you're allergic to up to the point of reaction is *not* new. (Note, this is for regular, non-anaphylactic, allergies.) There's a theory... -
ARCHIVED How Can I Help My Husband Understand?
tarnalberry replied to hannahsue01's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
As much as I think that there are some serious, serious issues that are not just "he doesn't get celiac" that need to be resolved here, I also was to support what CarlaB is saying here. "Not in the mood" is not sufficient reason to avoid sex for months. And I say that as someone with a condition that makes sex painful - there's something that'll definitely... -
ARCHIVED Celiac And Dairy Products
tarnalberry replied to suzven's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
We can't tell you if lactase (the enzyme that is the main 'ingredient' in lactaid pills/drops) will help because we can't tell if the problem you have is with lactose (the milk sugar) and not producing enough of the enzyme internally to break it down, or if the problem is an intolerance to casein (the milk protein) and your immune system reacting to that... -
ARCHIVED Is Gluten Free Gravy A Myth?
tarnalberry replied to FeedIndy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Growing up, I wasn't gluten free at all, but didn't know, for 15 years!, that some people used wheat flour for gravy. We *ALWAYS* used cornstarch. Always make a slurry first, and then use what you like - cornstarch, rice flour, or another flour. Some types won't work well - potato flour? I think? or it's the potato starch? I'd have to check a cookbook... -
ARCHIVED New Creation In My gluten-free Kitchen
tarnalberry replied to Drama-Queen's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
how would you make this dairy free? I haven't found any truely casein free cheeses worth anything. -
ARCHIVED How Can I Help My Husband Understand?
tarnalberry replied to hannahsue01's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
hannahsue, I would *highly* encourage you and your husband to get counseling. this isn't about you not feeling well, or whining; this is about him not having control. it screams it. you two need to learn how to communicate and work together. -
I just complete my snacks into mini-meals - veggies have hummus, apples have peanut butter, tortilla chips have chunky salsa w/ beans. Small amounts of other types of things work well too - asian chicken salad, bean salad, chicken soup, etc.

ARCHIVED Do You Have Stomach Pain Because Of Gluten?
tarnalberry replied to ebrbetty's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's possible to have celiac *AND* have foods bother your stomach. Though, if it's 30 minutes after eating a banana, chances are it's not purely *stomach* pain - it's at least moving on past the stomach. -
ARCHIVED Arguing With One Another On Posts!?
tarnalberry replied to chgomom's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I think it's good to have all this information. If I know that a product is supposed to be gluten-free, but people have reacted to it, I'm going to approach it differently than if no one has ever reacted to it, than if I have no information on it. It's all useful information in it's nuances. -

ARCHIVED Need Help Understanding Blood Test Results
tarnalberry replied to mom2crazykids's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You need to get ahold of the lab (or have your doctor do so) to find out what the reference ranges are. Without those, you can't really interpret the results. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Challange
tarnalberry replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
A couple things: 1. the tax deduction is only for the cost above and beyond regular food costs, and it's debateable if it's legal, since you don't have to spend that money (bread isn't necessary, you can eat rice instead, for instance). other caveats on the tax deduction - you have to be able to deduct medical expenses, meaning that you spend at least... -

ARCHIVED Unsure Of How To Proceed--please Help!
tarnalberry replied to AliceW's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm also very undecided on enterolab, and despite inconclusive blood tests and no biopsy, I haven't used their tests. I did a dietary challenge, got sick when I ate gluten after a month gluten free, and decided that was my answer. That was sufficient for me - and my doctor. So that's that. Do what you need to do. We're all a bit different, and take... -
ARCHIVED Do You Have Stomach Pain Because Of Gluten?
tarnalberry replied to ebrbetty's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
When you say "stomach pain" *WHERE* do you mean? The stomach is actually in the rib cage, fairly far above the belly button. So, in the middle of your abdomen, around the belly button or below it, is really intestinal pain. I definitely do get that - not as bad as what you describe, but bad enough at times. Usually not shards-of-glass, but it's happened... -
ARCHIVED Greatest News Ever!
tarnalberry replied to mommyetb's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
While I think that we're often a little to prompt to say "oh, it must be celiac", there are a few red flags here. First, is the identification of the gluten sensitivity genes by the Enterolab test. Those weren't tested for by a regular, 'mainstream' lab. (Oh, I can't wait until Fine gets his work peer-reviewed and accepted!) Second, and more importantly... -
ARCHIVED Arguing With One Another On Posts!?
tarnalberry replied to chgomom's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I think it's also important to consider that there isn't necessarily a right answer, so what may seem like arguing to one person, who's expecting one black and white answer, may actually be good discussion to others. Not to mention the fact that it can be very, very difficult to determine what is arguing and what is friendly discussion via just written online... -

tarnalberry replied to Sara-UK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yep! You don't realize some of those things are gone until you mess up! -

ARCHIVED Beef: Ate Beef...feel Sick :(
tarnalberry replied to chgomom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
What was on the beef? How was it cooked? Did you have *anything* else within four hours? Did you swallow much air with it? Lots of questions here. -
It is NOT rude to not make yourself sick. If I can't find something at a place that won't make me sick - and no place can GUARANTEE no contamination risks - then I'll not eat. I may bring something with me, but more often I'll eat ahead, as that's easier. I'm going out with friends to socialize, not just to get sustenance.
