  1. IBS, lactose intolerance, and "it's in your head" are all very common misdiagnoses of celiac disease.
  2. Most of it? I've never seen any carbs in margarine, and since lactose is a sugar... I do know that Smart Balance Light is Gluten-free Casein-free (casein free - no dairy whatsoever). Regular butter is actually likely to be just fine if she's only avoiding lactose, as the fat is easy to separate from the sugars; it's separating *all* the protein that...
  3. As has been noted, many people have different reactions. The fact that you notice symptoms a few hours after eating gluten-filled products is a sign! It's certainly worth getting testing (if you're still eating gluten) and doing a dietary challenge after getting tested.
  4. There was never any concern about frozen spinach.
  5. Sorry, don't know about that one. Two things you should do: Google for the "prescribing information for synthroid" and read the top section that tells you about it's active ingredient and is closely followed by the paragraph about the inactive ingredients (fillers and carriers), or call the company and ask. It seems that pharmacists, though they should...
  6. airplane. ugh, painful stomach, seatbelt, two people between me and a busy bathroom. and I don't even get bad symptoms.
  7. I love it when people are shocked by gluten-free foods tasting good. I had a coworker, meaning well, today say "You can't eat anything!" (The only things I truely absolutely avoid are gluten and dairy; seems like a cakewalk in comparison to what it could be!) But it's just sooo not true! And I still get "oh, your lunch looks delicious" comments.
  8. No, but I've had chronic hypertension in the pubbococcyx muscle, which is in the area, and did physical therapy for it (yes, in a clinic ) for a number of months, which really helped. You might see if there are any PT's that know of ways to work on the issue. I don't know if the muscle is 'accessible' through the rectum (I am thinking it's not) so biofeedback...
  9. You might spend some time during your commute brainstorming what sorts of things work for your family. For me, chicken soup is an "easy" thing to make because, though it takes time, I don't have to pay attention to it. Plus, I can make a gallon at a time, and freeze leftovers. (My husband likes to eat it on tortilla chips for something different... It...
  10. I don't know if I get sick off "one crumb" but going by symptoms is useless, since you can have damage without symtoms anyway. As for the kissing - I use primarily waiting (something that studies on peanut proteins for the allergic seem to support) and brushing. My husband mostly eats gluten-free, but not all the time.
  11. pretty easy, as has been noted... I usually clean in a bowl and collander, toss w/ a bit of oil (or not) sprinkle w/ spices (or not), and put in the oven. (300f?) turn/toss half way through or so.
  12. I've used Tinkyada, Trader Joe's, Ancient Harvest, and Mrs. Leepers Corn. The corn pasta sucks, the other three are all good. I prefer Tinkyada for the 'closest to regular', but Ancient Harvest (quinoa/corn blend) is also good for something different. I don't even bother rinsing the Tinkyada.
  13. You'll find oodles of recipes in the recipes section, btw. I have a post in there with 45ish recipes in it, Carriefaith, I believe, has a post with a bunch of her recipes, and lots and lots of other people have added theirs. I encourage checking in there when you have time, to print out recipes.
  14. Depends on your company, really. I'm a little bitter on the subject at the moment, but most companies I'm aware of have "personal use guidelines", realizing that some things are better done on company time, but they also state that excessive use (and some specific uses, like for a personal business, or porn, not like I'm saying those are applicable) are...
  15. I don't find the diet all that bad. It only gets bad when life gets really hectic and there are days upon days where I can't get home to cook or am expected to eat out places where I can't take the time to explain to everyone why I'm not eating. (Why must the always stack award ceremonies at the same time?!) Other than that, I think it's fairly easy, but...
  16. Yes. IT records packet traffic. (There is software and hardware available specifically to do this sort of thing. Some of it already bundled with server software.) Only the most paranoid companies record packets themselves, though many *many* companies record email. They can search all these records without ever coming and visiting your computer in person...
  17. IT is recording the IP addresses you're visiting anyway, so if they ever look at the logs, they'll know where you are "looking". (We just had an investigation recently...)
  18. Additionally, McCann's is one of the ones that *has* been tested at over 200ppm of *wheat* gluten. The company themselves says that there is potential for cross contamination and does not recommend their oats to celiacs. It's not necessarily as bad as risking Quaker oats, but still...
  19. lol we're still married.
  20. that's why I don't want to generalize. prior to my medical issue (and occasionally these days) I was the one with a much higher drive than my husband. twice a day would have been lovely.
  21. I have a long recipe thread in the recipes section (here) that you can search for that has a number of soup recipes in it, amongst others, a couple of variations on the chicken-rice theme. (It's a staple in my house. )
  22. I find that just getting enough protein isn't enough. I also need fat and fiber. It really needs to be *balanced*. I wish it were easier! Nuts are better than carbs for holding me over, but not great on their own. It's kinda wacky, and tough figuring out what is the key for each of us. Don't be too worried about fat content (if it's healthy fat)....
  23. Well, why doesn't someone call them and ask if it's a problem? If they are his 'adoptive parents' and you are his wife, they might be hurt if you *don't* come use their kitchen for five days! Talk to them. You've got three months to work on this one. Use that time. And look into some foods that don't need to be cooked - bean salads, cold soups, etc...
  24. lol... thanks for the followup work (to both you and your wife) but, man, do they like to give unhelpful answers or what! well, I suppose "oh noes! zomg!! avoid it all for fear of your life!!!11!1!!!!1111!!eleventy-one!!" is helpful in some ways. (yes, I know I'm a geek. I'm also procrastinating at work.)
  25. Celiac disease often leads to osteopenia, is well documented to be connected with hypothyroidism, and some believe it leaves you prone (before going gluten-free) to growing too much bad bacteria in the intestines. So the 'multiple' diagnoses are not surprising - these are things that go together quite well, actually. That said, there is *no* reason to take...
